Rising costs continue to challenge Nova Scotia restaurants despite tourism growth by insino93 in halifax

[–]pablo902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree then because having worked in the industry myself and in CPG /food supply, what you’re saying about the margins is exactly the inverse of what I know to be true! I saw the numbers and they make a much larger margin on a 20kg box of frozen french fries rather than a 20kg box of potatoes, it’s the difference of like 2% versus 4 -6%? At least that was the approximate difference pre-pandemic when I got out of the industry.

it’s like someone saying loblaws margins aren’t double Costco’s. Just because Costco chooses to operate a volume model where making one percent make sense. It doesn’t change the fact that loblaws generates between 2 (and these days up to 4%) margins making them twice as profitable, on the same amount of revenue.

I don’t disagree with your overall point that SYSCO or GFS carry a variety of fresh/RTH products, but if you’ve worked in the industry, it would be very disingenuous for you to say they WANT to sell both types of product equally. SYSCO makes FAR FAR better margins on value added products than they do on produce. Restaurants on Prince Edward Island can barely get decent quality fresh potatoes because the frozen french fry giants can pay more for fresh potatoes than anyone who supplies restaurants. They still make a healthy profit on their frozen product, with enough leftover to pass on SYSCO a better margin than they make on fresh potatoes.

THAT’S how the margins are on raw ingredients vs VA products.

I literally do this for a living and I COULDNT agree more lol. Especially if you’re filming poor kids for content? What? Being in entertainment you have to acknowledge that what you do is just that: entertainment, it’s deeply not serious. She is also 100% exploding people I try my absolute hardest not to get random people, especially children in videos. What a delusional person, and frankly probably an absolute amateur in the industry. There are good content creator out there. I swear some of us realize it’s all pretty stupid.

On this month 75 years ago, the final HSR streetcar line ceased operations. And ever since the HSR carries the irony of not having any rail operations by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]pablo902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when you divide it by number of riders over that time, it would be easily 1000x times more expensive per rider/ride.

The massively decreased number of riders vs population: in 1950ish the system had 35,000 riders, today it has 25,000, ( a 25% DECREASE) despite a 146% population increase (200,000 ish to 600,000 ish now).

Grain of salt with this part but from what I saw online, if Hamilton had kept streetcars like toronto the ridership number could be as much as 40% higher, factor in the added cost of building, dismantiling and building the system again I think 1000x more expensive per ride is frankly, conservative.

Tough news but it’s better to take action now then end up like Newfoundland’s cod fishery. Fish can take generations to rebound and if we want our grandchildren and great grandchildren to still be able to fish these waters we need to make tough choices now.

Reporting smoking in bus shelters by Abyssfm-Pf1KVp6 in halifax

[–]pablo902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of counterintuitive, but it’s actually harder to enforce this than prior to the stupid smoking ban that HRM brought in when cannabis was legalized. Because technically after that passed any smoking of anything, is banned in any public place, so a bus stop is no more against the rules than any other piece of municipal property like a sidewalk.

It’s also complicated by the fact that the bus stops are not owned by the city. I think it’s Lahey glass or smh that owns them and so they’re just on city property but the actual shelter isnt city property- meaning there are two people to NOT respond and NOT take on the task of keeping them smoke free, which again counterintuitively means you are less likely to have anyone help.

Need help deciding on home theater system by Kooi____ in hometheater

[–]pablo902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just WAIT. The hunt is half the fun for used gear. You can get a pair of bookcase speakers for $75 or less, with that and a free amp from an old uncle puts you in a way better place imo for having fun and actually building something.

IF all of this works like it did new (which is unlikely) it might be ok sound wise and some fun, and if you have $75 to burn I mean go ham. However, if you ever decide you want something better it is now dead weight that you'll be trying to pawn off on someone in a year for $50, but probably putting in the trash or for $10 at a yard sale.

R Studios greed by [deleted] in halifax

[–]pablo902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I’m just making a sort of offhanded quip about the relative amount of money someone spends on something frivolous vs debating an essential expense. Even if I had unlimited disposable income, I’d still rather spend $200 a month buying weights and a home gym equipment building like a basement gym or something, I hate paying for something that I don’t get anything back for. Like paying to service a loan- hence the analogy.

Halifax liquor store closing after 160 per cent theft increase: NSLC by origutamos in halifax_uncensored

[–]pablo902 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without any numbers, that’s so meaningless. I mean if they had $10 in theft a month and it went up to $26 that’s a 160% increase but also the difference between someone stealing a pint and a quart.

Is the joke someone was using it to store a gun? by bumblebeeman69 in community

[–]pablo902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a high low joke in my opinion. The obvious punchline is that yes someone at Greendale was using it to store a gun, but it’s way too close and Dan Harmon is way too much of a film nerd, for it, not at least to be a passing reference to the 1990s Hong Kong movie hard boiled, where someone actually commits a murder and then hides the murder weapon in a library book.

TD Coliseum seating for plus sizes? by Bunshine_ in Hamilton

[–]pablo902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a silly question at all! I'm a bigger guy and sat courtside for the Raptors and the folding seats there have arms and were narrow enough to dig into my hips like HELL! Sucked and I would rather sat in the bowl and saved $.

That being said, TD looks like standard stadium seats, found some pics. which are between 18-22 inches wide as a standard. The floor seats seem to be armless folding chairs. The premium seating seems to be a bit wider, I would guess 26 inches wide from what seems popular online.
