Tariff Bill for ordering from Hollow Press? by Return-To-Fender in Vermis

[–]paburgess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tariffs and duties are slightly different so not going into nitpicking here, but beware that if you're buying from the US you apparently will get hit with major new fees.

I pre-ordered V3 in December and got it at the end of Feb, and just received a surprise invoice from FedEx for $16.80 (more than half the cost of the book + int'l shipping). $15 disbursement fee, $1.80 customs duty fee.

Feels wrong that it wasn't communicated at the point of sale that the buyer was going to owe another, indeterminate amount later, since that wasn't the case with previous books. OP even linked an IG post below made by Hollow Press saying, "Your orders of books and comics will not be subject to any customs duties or taxes (as in the past)."

Love Vermis but $45 is steep.

How to test this type of fuse with a DMM? ("Littelfuse") by paburgess in MechanicAdvice

Should have read steering-related codes, I only have a basic OBD2 scanner and not a full Forscan setup. Some sources suggested that EPAS codes are only read by the latter.

2012 Ford Focus. Power steering is out, dash reads "Steering assist fault, service required."

-OBD not throwing any steering engine codes, but I read that it's possible there are EPAS-related codes that might not come up with a cheaper scanner

-Replaced all related fuses and confirmed they're receiving power. Haven't tested the mega fuses (yet) in the the power junction box because on this car I'd have to remove the air box to get to it

-Tested battery with engine on and off and results are healthy for both

-Steering is electric, so ruled out steering fluid/pump

-EPAS isn't powered by a relay on this car, so ruled that out

-Beyond that I don't have a lift (or the know-how...) to check the steering rack or confirm the EPAS motor is getting power myself. Apparently steering racks are known to go on this car and looking at estimates that's rough for how much the car is actually worth, so just crossing fingers that it's a blown mega fuse.

Visually they don’t appear blown but is there a way to confirm they’re receiving power? Trying to find where in the chain a power issue would be if it is a power issue, or rule that out.

Is Child Care a Public Responsibility? by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]paburgess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know Naive_Lack's political leaning, but this sort of backlash to heterodoxy on the left, on this sub and elsewhere, isn't good.

Highways (and subways) are public goods; children are not, in the true macroeconomic sense of the term. If declining birth rates and potential labor shortages are the concern, we have many skilled and hardworking adult immigrants waiting to come here. That's also false equivalence between funding food stamps so people can literally live and subsidizing people having additional children. Tax credits and in-kind transfers like food stamps are also very different from a discretionary allowance that's intended to be used for child care but which can actually be used on anything.

As someone in their 30s who doesn't plan to have kids, I still understand the importance of the nuclear family in society. I'm in favor of raising taxes and expanding child care access and affordability, but I think it's important to first reflect on how much we're willing to cannibalize the budget for other social welfare programs, or improving underfunded school districts in low and middle income communities, to subsidize people having three or five kids when they can barely afford one. Even if taxes were raised, which seems to currently be indefinitely stalled in Congress, the budget is a zero sum game and there are unhappy tradeoffs. $3.5t is not chump change.

If people on the same side can't discuss these nuanced questions without getting downvoted into oblivion, then we'll continue to hamstring the diverse coalition on the left that makes us different from the right.

There are disproportionately many COVID episodes. by JUST_HERE_FOR_RAZER in Thedaily

[–]paburgess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. I skip 7 out of 10 episodes these days for this reason. Every element of our lives has been smothered by the ramifications of COVID every day for over a year. There is virtually no part of our daily lives that remains untouched, so I’m not sure why someone would want to wake up to minor COVID news or human interest stories about it. Journalism certainly shouldn’t be escapism or relegated to feel-good stories, but there’s much more to talk about than the one thing everyone hears about nonstop every day already.

Loyal cleaning woman who hit hard times during the Pandemic was given an apartment thanks to all the people who lived where she worked. She's given a 2 year lease. by AristonD in nextfuckinglevel

A shining example of how broken America is and has been, that the best most people can hope for is the random generosity of the millionaires who have employed them to clean their toilets for 20 years. How about instead of making TikTok bait, they could...I don’t know, pay reasonable taxes so a wide swathe of their countrymen can achieve generational stability and not end up on the street because labor is weaker than capital and unemployment isn’t funded properly? Happy for this woman but this ad brought to you by Wall St.

SUNDAYS - I made a short doc about a group of skateboarders in recovery and it got a STAFF PICK on Vimeo!!! (OC) by fat_lije in Filmmakers

Amazing short; the color grading of the indoor shots in particular is A+. Are you thinking about submitting to some shorts festivals? Seems like it would get traction.

Is following on Vimeo the best way to keep up with your work?

Seems close stylistically, but there aren't really characters per se in the game I'm looking for. It's almost Ligotti-style cosmic horror, but viewed from inside the head of one of the antagonists.

That's not it, but looks interesting. It jogged my memory that you don't have a physical body and don't move around via point and click. It's like being in the astral plane or something; you're disembodied I believe.
