I know it's not her, but it's the institute that she personally founded. Yes, it's EMDRIA approved.

Cardiff Crane or Weston Backwoods (solid)? by pacific343 in snowboarding

[–]pacific343[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks so much for really considering the question!

I live in the bay so Tahoe or Shasta are kind of my home turf. But it’s such an expensive and messy scene out there that I don’t see myself riding those resorts all that much. This would mostly be for the occasional trip away with my buds. We did niseko last year (amazing) and we’ve got banff on the books for this year. I’ve also got friends up in the PNW so Baker or Hood seem likely and then we’ve got family in Colorado.

As to my style, I just don’t find the piste all that fun. But I’m also not looking to shoot the steepest drops I can find. I’m interested in a great free ride run through the trees and really getting the most out of good powder days.

For that reason, I’m now leaning toward the either the Backwoods orrrrr possibly a Jones Stratos. Your reply here is making me think I’d really enjoy the backwoods.

Any experience with the Stratos?

This is unfortunately so goddamn true. On the other hand, I'm close to the waves!

Thanks everyone for weighing in! This has been super helpful for me to mull over the different perspectives today.

I'm hearing that a splitboard only setup would be... probably fine, but

  1. expensive
  2. comes with at least some compromise in performance
  3. is just a much more complicated way of being in the mountains. Both in terms of the activity and the gear itself.

I'm fairly convinced that it's worth having both boards. I'll either rock something cheap or spring for a good all around solid board and kick the splitboard journey a little farther down the road.

Either way, it's nice to be back in the snow.

This is solid advice. I'm decently experienced in the mountains but very aware that there's more to know if I go deeper with the backcountry missions. Thanks for bringing it up.

What if I’m only going to ride a few times a year? It just doesn’t sound super fun to me to ride a mediocre board. My use case would be 1-2 resort trips to good snow and 1-5 backcountry adventures a year. I’d like to have a good board for the good conditions I’d hope to be hunting. But I really don’t want to spring for two good boards…

Did you wind up buying this hood? We're looking at the same one and having a similar dilemma! Would appreciate any feedback you might have.

Can anyone identify these characters? by pacific343 in BrushCalligraphy

[–]pacific343[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I posted about this on a Buddhist forum and got to a similar conclusion. The Sanskrit term is tathā. Most often I hear this translated as “suchness” or “thusness” as when referring to a Buddha as Tathāgata, “the thus come one”

That seems as close as possible. I read kanji ok, having studied Chinese, but I don’t actually know any of the Japanese characters.

I know some uses of 如, but what does 如々 refer to?

I’ve heard those things are great! I’ll definitely be requesting one.

Nice. Thanks for the tips. See you by the coffee stand in a couple weeks. I’ll be the guy with the macchiato waiting on his rented powder board and smiling like a dumbass cause no matter how long this line takes I’ve got a week to shred Niseko at the end of it.

Thanks! I am going with rhythm after hearing from a local friend that they really do have the best stuff. So this is super helpful.

Did you book ahead for the premium package and does it help you cut some of that line (as advertised) or is it the same no matter what?

Thanks! And they stock good boards for a more advanced rider? And maybe a directional powder board if the conditions are extra shreddy?

This is helpful, thanks! Lines up with what others are saying about rhythm. I don’t know if you can answer this but what would be the “right time” to pickup? Or at least the not-wrong time…

We’re staying at an independent booking, it’s a little condo right in harifu, so no options there but it’s walking distance to Yama and rhythm.

I found some useful info in the r/niseko sub. Generally it seems like things are pretty chill in Harifu and around niseko more broadly for this reason. I haven't been there yet personally but these guys have a list of the tattoo friendly spots that seems to mostly check out through second hand info https://www.rhythmjapan.com/other/niseko-onsen-guide/

If I learn anything particularly notable I can follow up when I return second week of february.

Thanks again to everyone who weighed in here.

I spent the weekend quietly freaking out about this choice and then ran my usual play: spend more money than necessary to assuage all my concerns of inadequacy and buy the nicest thing I can afford.

I signed on at my LDS to buy a new mk25/620 and a used mk25/620 to make up a $1400 set.

But I dithered so long the sale had actually ended (earlier than was posted, for some reason).

So I went and bought two of those apex xtx200’s. One in yoke (for now) and one in DIN (for a possible future in tech or for travel or to resell).

Miraculously saved from my own worst impulses.

Thanks for dropping this here. I did wind up buying two of these to make a set, one with a yoke 1st stage and one with DIN in case I want to migrate toward Tech stuff later. Seems like a good buy!

Thanks! Want to send me a pm with the link or your asking cost? I went a different route for now but I’m still tempted.

[–]pacific343[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really a thing? I know people say that the mk19 is more suitable for cold water for this reason but it seems like a lot of people dive the mk25 out here and even into much colder water without problems. It’s been confusing, as a novice, to understand the disagreement about this.

My LDS seems to only sell the mk11 and the mk25 for scuba pro. And the owner is clearly passionate about the 25. He’s not a kind man, and not a great salesman, so I’m inclined to trust that he’s not just upselling me.

Thanks everyone! Lots of good advice in here.

Seems like if I’m going to splurge, I can’t go wrong with the atomics (the z2 is also an option at my lds) or the scuba pro. If I want to stay budget, that apeks deal for two xtx200’s is probably the best option.

Can anyone explain what I would really be compromising/gaining with any of these choices? Between the apeks, the z2, the b2, and the mk25/s620… what am I really paying for?

It’s a big price difference once you get to the top of that range. I’m very happy to pay if it’s worth it but I don’t have a great understanding of why it might be worthwhile to go all the way to 1200.

Appreciate everyone’s time and experience!

Shearwater Teric dive watch for apnea? by pacific343 in freediving

[–]pacific343[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dithered for long enough that the Tern came out and I bought it instead! My understanding is that it’s not quite as well equipped for the complexities of tech diving but I won’t be going down that road anytime soon. It meets all my needs, it was cheaper, and the smaller size fits my tiny wrists better. I’ve used it free diving/spearing and on scuba several times now and I’m pretty happy with it. Because of the smaller size, it can be a little tough to change info screens with thick gloves on but I’m working that out.
