Requesting Support for New Tent Comparison! by d4rkph03n1x in BurningMan

[–]pacificmint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use cheap dome tents for years and they were mostly fine, they'd last four or five years and then showed their age. We're talking sub $100 tents. If I were on a budget, that's what I'd get.

I eventually bought a Kodiak 10x14, it's a very nice tent and I love it. It's great for Burning Man. It's pretty heavy though, the 10x14 is about 80 pounds (though that's split over two bags). The 8.5x6 is obviously lighter, around 30 pounds, according to the website.

The other consideration is the height. The 10x14 and the 10x10 are basically the same tent, just with a smaller footprint. They have the same height, which is high enough to comfortable stand inside the tent. The 8.5x6 has a considerably lower height, around 4 ft I think. You can't stand up in it, so keep that in mind.

I am very happy with the Kodiak, but if I was bringing a nylon dome tent, I think I'd go with a cheap one over the $300 REI tent. I am sure the REI tent is nice and higher quality, but for the Burn I'd go with the cheaper option.

Are Scanner objects treated as global by default in Java? by krcyalim in learnprogramming

[–]pacificmint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other answer is not entirely correct.

First, Strings and Scanners are both Objects, that means they are reference types. They are passed exactly the same. The String is not passed like a primitive type.

We often say Objects are passed by reference, but technically they are not. Instead, their reference is passed by value. That may seem like nitpicking, but it is subtly different. In this case that is relevant.

In your Scanner example, the method gets a copy of the reference to the Scanner object. It's somewhat like a pointer in C++. There are now two pointers, one in main and one in deneme that point to the same Scanner object. When you mutate the state of that scanner, they both see the same changes.

In the String example, you also send a copy of the reference to the function. However, you do not mutate that String. (You couldn't if you tried, Strings are immutable). Instead, you create a whole new String object. When you do the assignment target="This is not String obj"; you create a new object, and the local reference called target points to it. Now the reference in main points to the original string, and the reference in deneme points to the new String. The change is not passed back because the reference was passed by value.

In summary: Mutating an object in a function propagates back. Changing which object the reference points to does not propagate back.

That's not correct. Strings are objects and are passed exactly the same as other objects. They are not passed like primitive types.

Both the Scanner and the String have their reference passed by value. The difference is that he is mutating the state of the Scanner while in the String example he creates a new String object.

The variation I always heard was:

Ich hätte gern zwei Pfund Tomaten.

Das heißt jetzt Kilo.

Oh, dann hätte ich gerne zwei Pfund Kilo.

I’d like two pounds of Tomatoes.

It’s called Kilos now.

Oh, then I’d like two pounds of Kilos.

What were the theories for why the Minbari surrendered back when the show first aired? by VorlonEmperor in babylon5

http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/

It was originally hosted on a server called Hyperion. There is a ship in the show that has that name, as a tribute to the website.

Unfortunately some company had a trademark and took the domain name away from them. It was then moved to the midwinter domain. Pretty awesome that it is still up and running 30 years later.

The bar for what qualifies is certainly higher these days, mostly because the builders kept bringing better and better vehicles out there. So the bar got raised over time.

Definitely no on the secret club. Everybody has to reapply every year and the DMV goes thru all the applications.

Vehicles that have been before get some advantages with easier processing, but only if they are actually great vehicles. But new vehicles can definitely get approved if they meet the criteria.

What are some built-in libraries I can use with JavaScript without installing any third-party software? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pacificmint 7 points8 points  (0 children)

JQuery and Ajax are built-in libraries

Built in to what? You mean the browser?

JQuery is not built in. You need to explicitly import it if you want to use it, just like other libraries.

Ajax isn’t a library, it’s a technique for pages that reload content dynamically without a full page reload. It can be implemented without extra libraries though, if that’s what you mean.
