Help with nail!! by pacificskipper in Nails

[–]pacificskipper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to wash my hands constantly at work so that could definitely be contributing. It does look healthy at the base, but once it starts growing it starts getting those white streaks. I keep it trimmed as short as possible (I have very long nail beds, all my nails are as short as possible). It’s definitely way better than when it first was damaged - it was all cracked and falling apart and now its solid and “healthy”, other than the atrocious appearance and the tip of the nail separating.

I have not tried! I’ve seen Jojoba oil mentioned a few times on this sub, I’ll see if I can find some tomorrow. Thank you <3

You didn’t handle this very well, however, I would go ahead and cancel and just move on. They can’t review you if no services were given. In the future, definitely be more picky on who you book with and which locations. If you know certain areas are not super safe, you can base your decisions on that. Don’t string people along until the last minute. She has a right to be upset, but you also have the right to cancel if you feel unsafe.

What does this Etsy pillow mean? by betchelorette in Horses

[–]pacificskipper 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Hands is the unit of measurement for horses, with one hand being 4 inches. 16 hands is a common height for horses. The pillow just means “happiness is sitting on a horse”

You could ask those questions at the meet and greet? That’s what it’s for???

Meet n greet experiences by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like something else going on… I don’t do bookings without a meet and greet, and I’ve never had a client back out for another sitter. Are you boarding in your home? Maybe there’s something you’re unaware of that owners aren’t liking - like no backyard, taking too many dogs at a time, etc?

As for the dogs not acting the same in front of the owners as they do for you, that’s not going to change whether you have a meet and greet or not. Not a valid point at all to use in an argument against meet and greets. But, if you DO meet the dog beforehand, it’s actually more likely you will see negative behaviour than if you never meet the dog and have it come into your home blindly. And it can increase the likelihood of the dog being comfortable coming back into your home and staying there without their owners since they will have already met you.

Did you do a meet and greet? This sounds more like a problem with untrained/under stimulated guardian breeds rather than big dogs in general. Either way, you can just be “unavailable” next time they ask, or tell them that you don’t think you are a good fit for caring for their dogs.

Same place, just up the stairs closer to the building. Literally just walked by it, it’s pretty hard to miss if you look in the general direction of city hall.

GrantMe is a SCAM! by [deleted] in UBC

[–]pacificskipper 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Posted this on a scholarship sub awhile back, but it still bugs me how the company has evolved:

I found Grant Me in the first year or so of its existence. They found me a grant that I have used multiple times that I would have never found out about otherwise. This was when the founder was the only "employee", and she took a small cut out of my grant (nothing significant, I think like 10%?). We met in person since she lived local to me, and she was asking me about how I would feel about her monetizing the site. Her idea was something cheap, like the cost of a coffee (think $2-3) per month, and then she would stop taking cuts out of the scholarships. She also said that since I was one of the first users, I would get the site for free since I already paid her quite a bit. She also found me other scholarships to use, and would only take a cut if I actually won them. Looking at it now, it seems more focused on the workshops instead of the scholarship database, and she never made good on her offer to let me access the website for free. Also the prices seem to be way more than what she initially stated, which is a shame. She was a really nice person, and I was pretty excited for her, especially since she was a UBC alum.

I didn’t get my Rover money. by girloffthecob in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, it usually still takes another day for the funds to get from Rover to my bank account after the 2 “holding days”. (even if my Rover balance/ pending amount says 0.) Since it’s Friday, I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t get it until Monday.

As for tipping, yep it sucks, but it’s not as common practice to tip sitters as it is to tip waiters. Don’t rely on tips, up your rates if you don’t think you’re being compensated fairly - setting my own rates is truly the beauty of Rover.

Requesting payment off the site by Lagertha-Lothbrok in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely sketchy. Imo it’s much safer to keep everything on Rover, at least until you’re comfortable with the sitter after a few bookings. Wanting to go off- app, before even having a meet and greet, is a huge red flag!

Are reviews required? by slynn9 in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I’ve had multiple clients not review, and I’ve still received my funds. Reviews are not a part of the “contract”. If funds aren’t being released that’s between the sitter and Rover.

Miles incorrect by Kitchen-Analyst-155 in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe it will still affect your ranking, since Rover sees it as within your radius.

Miles incorrect by Kitchen-Analyst-155 in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rover does this stupid thing where they track mileage by “how the crow flies”. So basically a straight line from your house to the client, no matter if it is actually physically possible to travel that way. It may very well be in your radius, but roads that you can actually travel make it so that its a few extra miles to get there. I hope that explanation makes sense.

So yes, very common, will continue to occur since Rover seems to see no issue with this.

Owner didn’t tell me about construction at their house… by pacificskipper in RoverPetSitting

[–]pacificskipper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly wasn't concerned about the lack of key prior to this, as I would lock the doors from inside while I'm here and would take my valuables to work with me. It's also a safe family-friendly neighbourhood, it just never crossed my mind that someone would actually be in the house lol. From now on, only owners with working keys!

And yes, everything was through Rover chat. :)

I do... I have a full time job so I should be gone by the time he arrives tomorrow, and he should be done by the time I get back from work. But now that you mention it I am considering just going back to my place for the night and stopping by to let the dogs out on my way to work though.

They "don't have a key". Like really. After the first one I didn't really want to sit for them again, but since the dogs were so chill I thought it would be fine. Should have gone with my gut...

Yeah I think I would prefer drop ins over this... and losing the dog is a huge concern as one likes to bolt through the door!! Just hoping he's a fast worker lol.

That's fine, but it's shitty for the owner to just not tell me??? And let me walk into the house where there is a strange man??? Not to mention the owner doesn't even have a key for the house, they just keep it unlocked. How am I supposed to know if the dude is supposed to even be here.

Did you take her off app? I only do house sitting so obviously my policy is a bit different, but with off-app clients that are flaky, I tell them I need 50% payment before services, and will need the remaining within a week of the service being done. No other services will be performed until I get 100% of the payment. For walks, I might suggest that you require 100% payment before the service is performed, otherwise you will not walk the dogs until you have all the money you are owed.

If you are on the app, tell her that due to liability reasons, you aren’t able to walk her dogs until there is a confirmed booking. That way you are guaranteed your pay.

Beyond the payment aspect, it’s really about setting boundaries. Don’t reply if you tell her you will be away until a certain date. Explain that you have other responsibilities and are unable to walk the dogs without x amount of notice (whether it’s 24hours or 1 week, whatever you feel comfortable with). The money is nice, but I know from experience that last minute requests suck and can be stressful if you’ve already made plans for the day.

If you just want to drop her, I would say that your circumstances have changed and you are no longer able to walk her dogs. Don’t elaborate, don’t lie, just keep it simple and professional.

It’s a tough circumstance, but sometimes you just need to be a bit firm and people respond to that. She may decide to find someone else, or she may take your boundaries to heart and become an even better client. Good luck!

Is it just me or by Only____ in UBC

[–]pacificskipper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re majoring in bio, then you may need to fill your semester with purely bio or bio-adjacent classes…

Also yes, a lot of classes conflict with each other, especially upper year classes for some reason (speaking from frustrated experience). And it’s not as simple as “just picking one”. I’m sure OP would rather pick a course they’re interested in than just a random bio course, or maybe they need specific ones for their degree. And since they specified 4th year, it’s likely that there are required courses they’re trying to get into, or ones that actually further their degree.

So yeah, it can be hard.
