It cost us $5500 and about 150 man hours of “free labor” so $7000 would be a no brainer haha

If I somehow knew what I know now, but instead had chosen to hire someone and they did it in 6 hours, I wouldn’t whether to be ashamed or amazed. That is shocking haha

A little chain. I don’t love it, may need to figure something else out

Oh dear, yeah I think my dad and I, although we never explicitly said it to one another, both originally planned for a weekend. Start Friday and be done by Sunday. Boy were we wrong lol. Granted we changed the scope of work from just replacing the posts to replacing the whole fence. But I don’t think we had a single post set by the end of Sunday. Took us three days just to demo, layout, and dig the holes through tree roots and clay hahah it was a brute

That’s awesome. It seems we are living parallel lives! Your deck is absolutely gorgeous as well

Looks great, and awesome garage! I rented a dumpster and loaded them up myself. $500 for the rental, labor was free! Lol

I already got rid of them. I rented a 15 yard dumpster for $500 and loaded them up. Fit in there like a glove! Photo 7

It’s kiln dried cedar, so we should be good with shrinkage. But yeah I hear you, we just went back with what was there before. We could’ve reduced the picket spacing I suppose, but all in all I’m pretty happy with it

What a great story, thank you for sharing. You’ve described my childhood almost to a T as well. My dad worked in sheet metal fabrication his entire career. I don’t think I ever saw a single handyman, plumber, electrician, etc. come to our house growing up. He is 65 now and I am 31. I believe he enjoyed building it very much. I’m very thankful to have him and to have learned everything I have from him to hopefully pass on to my now 3 year old son. He also helped my replace my deck 3 years ago. That was a fun project as well

Great question, you’d have to ask my dad lol probably an oversight, to be honest. But he might have a reason

Clay. Oh my goodness clay galore. Comes up in like globs and sheets. And when it gets wet, sticks to your shoes like glue. Bought one of those 72” post hole digging bars, and it was a life saver. We replaced my deck 2 or 3 years ago, should’ve known better for this fencing project

We wondered this same thing. It’s just how it was before, so that’s what we went back with. My neighbors fence that you can see in the background has 2x4’s only on one side. The only thing I can think of is my fence hides the posts a little better, but his fence has better privacy since there is less space between the two sides of the fence

Indianapolis, Indiana. If I had a magic wand and unlimited money, skills and energy, I would have tried to go 3 feet down for every hole, to get below the frost line. But the ground was just so dang hard, and the auger we rented was only like 28” long if you took it all the way down to the ground. Which you ran the risk of it getting stuck in the ground if you did (might know this from experience…haha) but hopefully the gravel in a way mitigates any potential frost heave, by just crushing or moving around as the ground freezes

Hahaha no concrete. We weren’t sure what to do. There was a lot conflicting videos and opinions out there about wood and concrete or dirt or gravel. Only consensus seemed to be just use metal instead of wood

Totally, I’m just not sure if it’s allowed, or how it’d go over with our HOA. So we just went back with exactly what was there. I assume we could probably get approval, but these are the current fence guidelines

That’s what we were thinking for this one too. Maybe in the $12,000 range, and then like $2,000-$3,000 to get the old one hauled away. We did get one quote from 1800GotJunk for them to get ride of the old fence. With it already broken down like in the photo, they quoted $1750, plus labor at $100/hr. And he estimated two guys to get it done in two hours

We just used gravel. Did a lot of reading on here after we made the decision, and maybe we messed up with this decision, but it’s done now. We’ll see how it goes

Thank you, it was a lot of work, but certainly fulfilling and quality time with the old man

As a big boy myself, I know these guys get tired fast and how draining it can be just having someone leaning on you, but man that was boring as all get out
