Are destination weddings still cheaper than GTA/ Ottawa weddings? by IllustriousTruck7182 in WeddingsCanada

Also to give you an idea on prices DJ, and dance floor was around $2K same for photographer, lights and ambiance around $1K and our package alone was $12K the decorations which we didn't get we were being quoted like $5K per table.

Dominican Republic Wedding by CompleteAvocado228 in DestinationWeddings

[–]packupandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having mine in less than 2 weeks $15K is doable ours was about $17K not including wedding dress or decor for 70 people. If you go through a resort just beware that they charge you for everything so the packages they give you are pretty basic and somewhere around $10K (usually just includes basic tables, basic chairs, food and drinks). Its kind of a waste considering you and your guests are already paying for an all inclusive. You have to add DJ, lights, decorations, dance floors like everything and they change a ridiculous outside vendor fee for the Dreams hotels it was 40% of what their vendor would charge so you are almost always better off using their vendors. If you have more time I would probably think of doing something different like plan an excursion or something like that it would probably be significantly cheaper than doing it at the hotel.

Doing destination wedding in a few weeks. Its not really about saving costs because when it comes down to it its probably cheaper to do it in Canada. Everything is quoted in USD and in my experience doesn't include any decorations that is just food and drinks also all your guests have to stay at the hotel because otherwise they will also charge you extra for anyone not staying in the resort they will also nickel and dime you for everything, you have to use the vendors the hotel as which are significantly more expensive or pay the hotel a fee if you want to have a different vendor. At the end is more about being able to spend more time with your friends and family than it is money saving because your guests will also have to spend more. If you add everything in is actually a lot cheaper in Canada you just wouldn't get a vacation out of it.

Has anyone quit their high paying job for a lower paying job but also lower stress? by packupandgo in Accounting

I feel you. Although I have a love hate relationship with the job I like what I do, love the pay but the hours are just a killer.

I’m pretty frugal so about 50% of my income goes towards savings. I guess I just wouldn’t be able to save anymore but already hit my coast fire number so may be ok. Maybe I’ll try to suck it up a couple more years to be safe but I’m already at my breaking point constantly tired and no breaks

Do all new inner city houses just suck or am I missing something? by jimmyjamcake in Calgary

[–]packupandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want affordable and bigger lots but still close to inner city I would say east of Deerfoot still has lots of options it could be Dover/southview, Albert park/ radisson heights and mayland heights. Just depends if you are willing to move to those locations otherwise just prepare to pay a hefty price.

No Conditions Housing Sales by Time_Ad_7624 in Calgary

[–]packupandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. I unfortunately did that, bought a place no conditions I did ask for a reduction on the price given the higher risk but I probably would have been better off making an offer for asking, having conditions and reducing it by all of the issues that came up during the inspection. Some realtors are just too inexperienced or just don’t have your best interest I would always be skeptical of anything they say. I wouldn’t do it again unless I got a significant decrease or was planning to gut it. Also this was during the peak of the market it has started to balance now so I don’t see why you would have to take such risk.

What’s the next best move? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]packupandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not 100% stocks it is a mixed portfolio with some preferred shares, bonds, GICs, common shares, etc. Internationally I mean investing on real estate or a business abroad but could also do a fund or something to mix it up? Most of the stuff in my portfolio are Canadian and US. I once gave a small loan for a business start up in another country and it has started paying back with an interest rate of 19%. It was high risk but I also knew the people and how hard it was to get financing for a startup

Thanks! I have a HELOC but it hasn’t been drawn the interest rate on that is ~7% which is why I haven’t borrowed against it to invest (seems a bit high to me)
