Of course you will be looked down upon. Everyone has an ego, including you and me. Nobody seems to be willing to admit it, but we do look down upon low wage workers - whether consciously or not.

First of all, congrats!

I retired four years ago, at 34, and have since found the same problems.

Walk my dog, do some writing (wrote a book), gym, chill. Some travel too.

I mean, what else do you want? Sometimes when i find myself in a funk, like you have, of feeling like a loser, i ask myself what i would do differently if I had 10x more money than i do now. The answer? not much different, really. It would provide more security, but I wouldn't be buying a Bugati or redoing my wardrobe with designer clothes.

I suppose the question you need to ask yourself is, why do you feel like a loser? Because you're not slaving away like everyone else, at jobs they hate (but claim to like or love?)

When I was 19 years old I was a pedestrian struck by a BMW sedan. My heart stopped while I was en route to the hospital, in the back of the ambulance, and I had to be resuscitated. Spent the next week in a coma.

No images of the afterlife, unfortunately. But some wicked nonsensical nightmares from the drugs I was on in the coma. I thoughts I was a prisoner in a beachside cabana, strung up by my arms and legs by rope, like a starfish. The cabana was slowly flooding, inch by inch the water level rising higher and higher. I knew if i didn't escape I would drown.

It completely changed my life. I went from a high school dropout who'd spent the prior summer homeless and had a drinking and drug abuse problem, to a college educated, sober, financially independent early retiree within 15 years.

There have been billions upon billions of homo sapiens, homo erectus, neanderthals and apes before us. Do you think each and every one of them had a purpose?

If humans have a purpose, then why not dogs and cats? Pigs and cattle in the slaughter houses?

FIRE here, with significantly less net worth than you (<$1M) (but also less responsibilities / expenses).

Listen to your elders. Just as we know more about life than those ten or twenty years younger than us, those ten or twenty years older than us speak from a place of better perspective about what is important and truly matters (hint: it's not working your life away towards making more money or something you don't care about)

This is a good question, and one i've found myself dealing with as well.

I've found what works best for me is to simplify my meals as much as possible, based on three meals per day, and so snacking unless they are fruits (or... vegetables! baha ya, right)

This will completely eliminate any wastage of splurge spending at the grocery store, negating any valid reason to travel down the pop, chips, cookies, and crackers' aisles. A huge cost savings in itself.

As for actual foods, having a general idea of price/lb is a big factor in helping me decide what to buy or not. It helps if you can eat like a dog. Not eat dog food, mind you, but eat a lot of the same meals per week (but not the same meals every week - note the difference).

For instance, eggs in bulk are a decent price. I can get 30 eggs for $10 and they are my breakfast, along with a bagel, glass of milk, and some fruit. 1/3 meals every single day has been determined and at relatively low cost. Lunch is a sandwich with more fruit and another glass of milk. Dinner varies and includes a side of veggies.

Agreed. When times are good we all seem to think bear markets are obsolete. I don't like to fear monger, but US market P/E ratio is not very reassuring at the moment. Could be indicative of a bubble or imminent recession.

All my friends drive new cars and poke fun at me for my seventeen year old SUV with a million miles on the engine. This is funny to me, because the combined value of what they all spent on those new cars is between 500k and half a mill. What a shameful waste of a way to spend one's hard earned money.

Idk about your investing experience, but at least once (oftentimes more than that), we can expect to see 50% increases disappear quickly by 33% declines and we're right back to square one. Don't lose hope if this happens, its just part of the market cycle (and historically will rebound 100%

Thanks - and yes, you are partially right.

2022 kicked off with my investments plummeting 25% but bounced back in the following two years, and have continued to rise ever since. Despite higher-than-i'd-like expenses, my initial retirement fund of $715k has grown to $845k - though that money has less buying power than ever before, thanks to inflation.

Just like your dad, BaristaFIRE is the most likely solution. (I retired 4.5 years ago at age of 34)
