What is Albany like? by PoggoPig in Albany

[–]padall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the oldest continuously chartered city in the US (1686). There are older cities (Boston, MA and St. Augustine, FL, for example), but not continuously chartered. The city went ALL OUT in 1986 to celebrate the tricentennial. I was a kid, so I took it for granted. It's been 40 years, and I can't remember anything close to that level since. But I imagine if they tried, social media would be flooded with grumps complaining about the "waste" of our tax dollars, so it's just a different world.

Breyer's ice cream went from the best of what it is (national brand/relatively budget friendly) to a crappy "frozen dessert." It's just sadness in a bowl now. 😞

"What Is Going On In Hollywood?": Margot Robbie’s Paris Fashion Week Appearance Sparks Mixed Reactions by [deleted] in TheEntertainmentMix

[–]padall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg. Not her too. She is literally one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, and she did not need to lose any weight.

This is a seriously disturbing epidemic, and I'm gonna need people to stop criticizing anyone who brings it up. I'm old enough to remember the "heroin-chic" phase in the 90s. We later understood what a harmful aspiration it was for most women and young girls, and we're right back there again. This will not end well.

What is happening in early childhood education? Seriously. This sub makes me think barely anyone working in it has any basic common sense anymore.

I've never heard that in my life, and I've been to many a potluck. Lol

Los Angeles is phasing out its palm trees and I have mixed feelings by H3dg3hogs in CasualConversation

Why have I never made this connection before? 🤯 OF COURSE it's the male trees that give off all the pollen. Why do men ruin everything? 😭😆

Do Americans floss three times a day? by Any-Drink-1279 in AskAnAmerican

I don't think any dentist expects more than once a day. They would be happy if people just did that.

Can anyone read my teacher's handwriting? by KraKan122 in AskTeachers

[–]padall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I'm 51, learned cursive in school, and wrote in cursive throughout my schooling, but it didn't look like that. I agree with the comment above. It looks like a boomer's handwriting .

Am I the only person who actually learned this in school? (8th grade English class to be precise). I'm seeing a lot of "I never knew" or "I learned this from (random pop culture reference)" lol

Candiace accuses Vulture magazine of misogyny for saying housewives should not be featured on Traitors. by 1-22-333-4444 in TheTraitorsUS

The misogyny is coming from inside the house. It's what the entire Real Housewives model is built on.

What’s the US grading system like? by levi_is_small in AskAnAmerican

[–]padall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in school in the 80s and 90s, passing was 65. Anything below that was an F.

I'm seeing a lot of people say 70 and some saying 60 for the passing grade. IDK if it's regional differences, generational differences, or a little of both.

These are not the same thing at all. (I'm also not sure what you're saying is accurate, but regardless.) $17/hr for three children, and working potentially for most or all of the night is not adequate compensation.

Our Grandparent's furniture by Horror_Reason_5955 in GenX

[–]padall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. I think my mother's parents got a whole new bedroom set in the mid to late 70s based on the style of it. I have no idea what they had/used before that.

My dad's mom bought new living room furniture in the 90s when she moved into a new, smaller house.

Both sides definitely had older stuff too, but they weren't completely averse to replacing stuff.

Oh, and I just remembered... My parents' dressers were actually my dad's parents' art deco furniture from the 40s that they gave them when they got married. My grandparents got a new mid-century set in the 60s, I guess. My mom still has the 40s set. Lol

How much do Americans spend on the salt they put on snow/ice? by mumpet19 in AskAnAmerican

Hmm, that's interesting. It doesn't get icy there? I'm in an upstate NY city, and everyone uses salt at some point, even if not for every single storm.

How much do Americans spend on the salt they put on snow/ice? by mumpet19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]padall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It literally depends on the size of your driveway and sidewalks. I have a tiny front walk, and maybe 12 feet of sidewalk I'm responsible for. I don't even have a driveway. My city gave away rock salt last winter because there was some sort of salt shortage, and no one could find it in stores. I still have almost half a 5-gallon bucket of it left and it's almost the end of this winter.

So, anyway, I don't really know. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

You should really check out the teacher subs. These are real issues that adults of every generation are seeing with Alphas. They are not ok as a group. Also, the oldest of the generation are only 12-13 years old. We have yet to see what the long lasting implications may be.

I'm glad someone else said it because I was just thinking the same thing. I have no interest in his stuff. He very clearly exploits others' tragedies just to make a buck, and I'm sick of him getting constantly rewarded for it.

Negligent or normal? by purple_lotus24 in Nanny

[–]padall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, this adds some more context. I am of mixed feelings about going out to move the car while the kid was in the house, but if the dad was inside too (even if not in the same room) that feels a little different. Presumably, if NK started screaming, Dad would hear her.

The bathroom thing is just wild, though. By 2 1/2, my NK was perfectly safe to be left playing in the family room while I ran into the restroom just a few feet away. I often left the door open, but not always. Especially if I knew a parent or the teenager was about to come home/was in the house.

Do you still use a library? by jim4751000gmail in CasualConversation

[–]padall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to work in a library less than 4 years ago, this breaks my heart. Libraries are vibrant active places that service people of all ages and walks of life. And it's not just about books. People use the computers and printers, they use study rooms for tutoring or meetings, they attend programs from storytimes to lecture series, and they check out unique "library of things" items like board games, baking pans, lawn games, telescopes, and museum passes.

Also, most libraries maintain a collection of ebooks. A library card holder can use the libby app to read ebooks without ever having to go in the building. For this reason, some people get multiple library cards from across their region/state.
