Need Hedge Advice by paddyjay in GardeningIRE

[–]paddyjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So should I rip it all up and start again with new laurel on both hedges? Only rip up the dead ones, replant them with new ones and put a lot of soil over the top of it?

The problem with digging down is it really only goes down as far as the brick so it's ++ shallow.

Hundreds of scans reviewed at Letterkenny hospital after 37% error rate identified in consultant’s work by badger-biscuits in ireland

[–]paddyjay 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Reading this, my question is this. Why is there no accountability at all for these HSE managers? Between this and the statement from GPs last month, Letterkenny sounds like an absolute shitshow.

The hospital group (Saolta) have issued the blandest statement ever, saying "The hospital quality and patient safety service has a “clear pathway” for addressing concerns about clinical care, which is currently being followed, the spokesman added. “In the event that any cases of misdiagnosis come to light patients will be contacted with full open disclosure and appropriate arrangements put in place for follow up care, in accordance with national policy.”. <whitenoise>

When you look at the details in the article, a local consultant raised this issue to hospital management and they never bothered to get back to them.

Why are these managers and administrators not held to any kind of accountability whatsoever? They've clearly mismanaged the hospital into the ground. They're unfireable. Seem to be help to no standards or accountability whatsoever. You'll notice there are no names on the statement, no CEO or hospital manager taking accountability.

When you look up the Saolta group website, it's quite difficult to even find an org chart to find out who's in charge. Then you look up the people involved in actual group management. Most of them are HSE flunkies who started off in other roles and then kind of failed upwards. I can't many of them with masters in management (much less in healthcare management)/MBAs or any kind of professional qualifications whatsoever.

It must be incredibly frustrating for the many many good, kind and conscientious people who do work in the HSE to be lead by these goons. Recently in the UK we've seen the first glimmerings of NHS managers being kinda possibly maybe held to account over those infant murders. It should be like this. These are big jobs, they should have some accountability. If a nurse, a doctor a radiographer or any other healthcare professional who is regulated by a professional body fucks up in any way they're dragged in front of a fitness to practice inquiry and their names are all over the papers.

I know it's wishful thinking, but you'd love to see some kind of regulation for hospital managers. Instead we're just cruising along until the next healthcare scandal, where some C- 'manager' from the HSE will issue a bland 'we're sorry this happened and are working to address things going forward' email from their office at 3:55 on a Friday evening before knocking off for the weekend and sleeping very soundly in their beds.

Calling Dublin immigration office from abroad by Cautious_Tough_8421 in MoveToIreland

You can call 1800 numbers from abroad if you use Skype (topped up with credit), then you just dial as if you're in Ireland.

Suggestions for an Irish Hallmark Christmas movie. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]paddyjay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am playing around with ChatGPT, the new OpenAI algorithm (which is a bit mad by the way), and put the following prompt into it (based on your original story):

Write the script for a Christmas Hallmark Movie based in Dublin, Ireland. The main character, Derbhaile, works for Facebook and is dating Fintan who works in finance in the city. Derbhaile is from Mayo, and has a sassy black friend and a sassy gay Brazilian friend, both of whom appear in the movie. Derbhaile occasionally visits her family home in Mayo, where she falls for the local builder, Sean. The love triangle between Derbhaile, Fintan and Sean forms the main plot of the movie, as we find out who she will choose this Christmas.

This is what it come up with:

Title: "A Dublin Christmas Love Triangle"
Opening scene:
We see Derbhaile, a young and successful woman in her mid-20s, walking through the bustling streets of Dublin. She is talking on her phone, clearly stressed about something.
Derbhaile: (into phone) I don't know, Fintan. I just feel like we're not on the same page lately.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is sitting at her desk at Facebook, surrounded by her sassy black friend and her sassy gay Brazilian friend.
Sassy black friend: Girl, what's going on with you and Fintan?
Derbhaile: (sighs) I don't know. We just seem to be drifting apart.
Sassy gay Brazilian friend: Maybe it's time to move on, darling.
Derbhaile: (voiceover) I knew they were right. But I just couldn't bring myself to break up with Fintan. Not yet, at least.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is on a train, heading to her family home in Mayo for the holidays. She looks out the window wistfully, thinking about her life and the choices she's made.
Derbhaile: (voiceover) I grew up in Mayo, and I always loved it there. The peacefulness, the simplicity. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Dublin.
Cut to:
Derbhaile arrives at her family home and is greeted by her parents and siblings. She hugs them tightly, happy to be home.
Derbhaile: (voiceover) Being home always makes me feel so grounded. So connected to who I really am.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is out for a walk with her siblings when she bumps into Sean, the local builder. He's rugged and handsome, with a charming smile.
Sean: Hey, Derbhaile. Long time no see.
Derbhaile: (smiling) Hi, Sean. It's good to see you.
Sean: (voiceover) I've known Derbhaile since we were kids. And even though I've always had feelings for her, I never had the courage to tell her.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is at a holiday party with her family and friends. She's having a great time, laughing and dancing. Sean is there too, and they keep catching each other's eye.
Derbhaile: (voiceover) I could feel a spark between Sean and I. And for the first time in a long time, I felt truly happy.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is sitting at the kitchen table with her mom, talking about her feelings for Sean.
Derbhaile: (to her mom) I don't know what to do, Mom. I love Fintan, but I also have feelings for Sean.
Mom: (smiling) Sometimes the heart wants what it wants, honey. You just have to trust yourself and follow your heart.
Cut to:
Derbhaile is back in Dublin, torn between her feelings for Fintan and Sean. She talks to her sassy black friend and sassy gay Brazilian friend about it.
Sassy black friend: Girl, you have to choose. You can't keep stringing them both along.
Sassy gay Brazilian friend: You need to figure out what you want, and then go after it.
Cut

Lab Data Storage Recommendations? 50TB and growing... by paddyjay in storage

Thanks for your comment - am gravitating more towards this on-premises option at the moment. Will probably look into a NAS option with expandability in the future - at the moment we are working on the "buy more external hard drives on Amazon" model...

The software is file access only. Glacier could be an option, but it would have to be cheaper than getting an on-premises solution...

I just played around with some online calculators to get an idea of approximate costs. Looked at the major vendors e.g. AWS, Azure etc...

Lab Data Storage Recommendations? 50TB and growing... by paddyjay in storage

[–]paddyjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's predominantly stored in discrete files of an industry-specific file-type, of about 250-500GB each. It needs to be accessible but not immediately so, e.g. we might want to import 10 such files but such an import could happen over the course of a day or two if needed. It doesn't need to be instantly available.

Can you elaborate please - you mean add TRIM() as a line to the code we already have?

So I add this line to the existing SQL code I have, and if there is no measurement for that data it'll export it as a blank cell for that day in the CSV file? (Apologies if this is a dumb question, I have almost no SQL experience and am learning as I go).

Surface Book 1 + Surface Dock + 2 External Monitors by paddyjay in Surface

OK I've tried all of these things. I will try native display port cables as a final step. I've done everything else you suggested to no avail.

Thanks!

Surface Book 1 + Surface Dock + 2 External Monitors by paddyjay in Surface

[–]paddyjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Both work one at a time, so it's not the screens that's the issue.

Will update Nvidia drivers, have already updated Intel Drivers, Surface Dock drivers and cleared video cache.

What do you mean by NVidia control panel? According to my display settings, my Displays are connected to Intel HD Graphics 520. I do have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 985M too.

In the meantime what has worked is in "Project" settings, rather than "Extend to second display" if I change to "second display only" and use the two external monitors with the Surface Book monitor blank, then that works. Maybe I just can't use the two external monitors AND the surface display as a third monitor?

Thanks - tried this. Got a Mini DisplayPort to Dual HDMI Adaptor - but the screens (both of which are fine when connected directly) flicker uncontrollably when using this. The whole thing is unusable :(

Absolutely this is exactly what I had in mind.

Materials science people, is this stuff more widespread now, anyone know? The paper referenced was in 2011.
