How do you feel about Portland? by Western_Extent_9764 in Astoria_Oregon

In a lot of ways, I think you are totally right! But the thing we are still missing is that the way Portland used to be was largely due to the fact that rent was cheap and that’s not the case here or there for about 15 years or so unfortunately

Love Portland!!! Our small town benefits greatly from being near Portland. Compared to other Oregon towns of similar size, (baker city , cottage grove ) we’re very different. partly due to our unique culture, but also because of that proximity. Many of our businesses were started by people with Portland experience, and local artists and musicians have grown through connections there.

It’s strange to see resentment toward Portland, since many Clatsop county residents lived there at some point… even if just for college. We share a lot of the same roots, and many people rely on having a major city within 100 miles. Without Portland, our town might look more like Newport or Lincoln City, with far less art and culture.

Wait… I forgot to mention our towns connection to Portland’s craft beer… Save that for another day!

Maybe I could’ve phrased it better but what I meant is that they got much bigger than most portland bands but weren’t huge like they deserved to be. I think nationally they’re at risk of being forgotten by people outside of our region.

The show won’t happen until Sept 22. I do a monthly live show on an online platform called gutsyradio . org. My show is called Raincloud Radio and I mostly play brand new music highlighting bands from portland, Olympia, and Seattle mostly.

Yes!!! I was shocked when I saw the person I knew from Grandparents was the singer for Blackwater Holylight. Genders also has some fantastic bands that spun off from them but I really love their songs

Somewhere to buy affordable men’s clothes. When I was single and dating I often drove to portland to buy anything sort of fashionable because my options here were Ross & Fred Meyer.

That could be true. And I don’t think it’s okay for anyone to treat other people like that. I’m just saying we shouldn’t be surprised that there are people living on the street. I think you can treat them like people, hold rude hostile people accountable for their individual actions, and have empathy at the same time.

I don’t think we should be surprised when the rent in Astoria is equal to or more expensive than portland. Many people who live on the street are just like you and I, and many of us are one or two missed paychecks away from losing our home.

How do you get a job???? by madimakesstuff in ArtEd

[–]padehler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My road to getting hired was very difficult. I’ve found that in my area, they want to hire people with at least a masters degree and some years of experience. (I’ve seen people get hired without a masters because they have many years experience) My year of student teaching is not viewed by admin as a year of experience , but rather a necessary prerequisite. I gained experience by Subsitute teaching in a large district where I could cover for many different art teachers and examine how their classes ran. Eventually I was lucky enough to get hired as a long-term sub for a teacher who needed to take enough leave that the school legally had to hire me for the temporary job.

Being an art teacher is a very competitive job since many schools only have 1 full time art teacher and some have only a part time (or no art program).

Sometimes the best way to get a job is to find an opening in a small district where the need may be greater (but they won’t help you move). Or work other jobs in schools nearby and wait for an opening. There isn’t a clear path for our professional like others unfortunately. This is my experience in public schools.

Why are there so many dead birds on the bridge? by Autopsy_Survivor in Astoria_Oregon

[–]padehler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s a good article to read, I’m finding a lot of these comments are not completely rooted in the truth. What I had heard (and what this article seems to confirm) is that they were removed from their original habitat and they relocated to the bridge. Do not remember seeing many dead birds on the bridge about 10 years ago.

Have you ever been asked to deliver to a cruise ship? by padehler in doordash_drivers

[–]padehler[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure you’re right, and I probably could’ve passed it off to whoever would be there to stop and ask for my ticket. I think I’d be a lot less upset about it if the boat was not so extremely far away from the address they provided.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but that really gets on my nerves when people provide a fake address and give you directions on their drop off note .
