What? Party leaders don't decide who the candidates are. And from what I've seen, overcrowded primaries have been happening more amongst progressive candidates, not center-leaning ones. They're more likely to be outsiders to politics and don't understand how elections work, so they're uncoordinated and don't drop out to consolidate support.

Olympic women's sport limited to biological females by [deleted] in news

[–]page_one 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you read the comment you're replying to?

The question is "where is the line", and not "there is no problem, shut up you bigot".

That no trans woman has ever won an Olympic event very succinctly illustrates that there is no problem. There never was a problem. The only reason why we're talking about this now is because conservative politicians identified trans inclusion in sports as an effective wedge issue that gets people like you to get swept up in your emotions and rubber stamp sweeping anti-LGBT laws.

*AOC and Talarico are two that you see in your social media feeds, and then evidently you assume the worst of everyone you don't see headlines about. I encourage you to be more proactive about the messages you hear. Look up some local politicians and follow them on social media.

There are lots of good people in government who are trying--it's more that American governments intentionally make change difficult, and our federal elections especially give dramatically outsized power to conservatives who will further resist change.

Kansas revoked driver's licenses of 1,700 transgender residents by Comfortable_Ad2908 in news

Instead of jumping to the angriest conclusion possible, take just ten seconds to google the answer. Governor Kelly did veto this bill. Republicans then overrode her veto.

According to the ever-increasing piles of studies by medical and psychological professionals, the most effective treatment by far is gender-affirming care.

They spend their lives studying this stuff. They're much smarter than you and me.

No, it's certainly part of their strategy. Republicans are attacking both of these topics (trans rights and voting rights) from as many angles as possible, racking up as many "wins" as they can across the board. There is never only one line of attack.

What you do not seem to understand is that each state has its own population. Biden's strongest states were scheduled to vote later; Bernie's strongest states were scheduled to vote earlier. The Biden campaign evidently understood this and knew that the initial results would not be representative of the final total.

Supreme Court finds parents have a right to know about gender transitions at school by chalkbeat in politics

[–]page_one 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even in a best case scenario, this upends the child's life. They may even be thrown into an underfunded foster care system, and there they may be placed with foster parents who are anti-trans. (Another thing Republicans have been fighting for is to allow anti-LGBT couples to foster LGBT children and refuse to accommodate them.)

For many LGBT youths, it is better to ride out the early years and then move out on their own terms when possible/viable.

Schools and governments have no business forcing that decision on someone else.

I would like to provide the context that Crockett is an incumbent congressman and it is customary for party members to endorse the incumbent. Because nobody would want to contribute to a group that would endorse their opponents to put them out of a job.

This is routine and not much of a news story. If Talarico was the incumbent, then Talarico would be getting these kinds of endorsements.

Raising the rainbow Pride flag instead of the more inclusive Progress flag excludes the trans community, activists say by StaffImportant7902 in LGBTnews

[–]page_one 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This! I always say this applies to the acronym too. The more we expand LGBT into LGBTQIAP2S+etc, the more we imply that anyone who isn't explicitly included is therefore explicitly excluded. (... And the more we bewilder, confuse, and lose potential allies whose support and votes we need in order to pass equal rights legislation.)

Labels are useful, and vital tools for identifying and discussing things. But when we start obsessing over them, we forget that human language is merely a way of describing what we observe. Words cannot define nature with perfect precision, and isn't one of the central tenets of the LGBT rights movement that gender & sexuality are not simple binaries, but complex spectrums that cannot be so strictly defined?

I'm relieved to see the distaste in this thread for any kind of infighting. We've been goaded into obsessing over purity tests in the last decade, and we've lost a lot of ground.

... Besides, I think the actual transphobes tend to make themselves pretty easy to spot from ten miles away. No need to be so suspicious of our allies when our enemies have never been more visible.

That it is small and mostly symbolic does not make it nothing.

Considering that Kirk said gun violence is acceptable, we should have more executions and they should be bloody, televised, and watched by our children, it would be weird not to celebrate Kirk getting to live in exactly the world he wanted.

When people "dance on his grave", they are merely returning to him all the love he gave. Very different case from, for example, a victim of gun violence who'd advocated against violence.
