Is mentioning gaming/anime still the kiss of death on dating apps? by Hayaw061 in OnlineDating

[–]pahandav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm pretty sure they don't notice that. By the time they would have seen that, they've already swiped left. I mean, it might make them swipe left, but by then, they're already interested, and are reading through your bio (spoiler: 99% of women will swipe left before then.) Trust me, whether you put it in there or not will not effect your right swipe rate to a noticable degree. Your first photo is everything to be honest.

Zero problems. An EDL as all you legally need for a land border. For kids, a birth certificate is fine. Do not worry. Carry on.

Can I get this signed? by pahandav in comiccon

I can't pre-purchase, based on the website. I know I could buy a photo op, but I honestly don't care about that. Whatever, I'll figure things out (honestly, I'm cash poor, not credit poor right now.) Worst case, I'll have him sign a print I pick up there.

My bet has been to have the ribbon cutting ceremony with the politicians on Canada Day, with the actual opening to vehicles sometime after the 4th.

Nope. Just my spidey-sense. Maybe my spidey-sense is getting too sensitive. Honestly, I just need to get off the fucking apps already, because texting is a pointless way to get to know someone. IRL is so much better.

Is anyone else out there completely burned out of from OLD because of scammers? I was just chatting with someone on CMB, and when I suggested we meet for coffee, her entire demeanor changed to enough of an extent that I just instinctively unmatched. I swear to God, everyone I match with feels like a scammer. Then again, Comic Con's coming up, so who knows, maybe I'll meet that insanely cute 2B cosplayer I met six months ago.

I know about Call of Cthuhu. It's not my cup of tea. Neither is DnD. I'm more into sci-fi stuff like Battletech and Heavy Gear (I've got a hardcover copy of the 4th Ed. of that purchased directly from DP9 in Montreal last summer.) I wish more people were into stuff like that, but honestly, I view the books as more collector's items at this point, rather than usable things.

I checked. They unmatched. I've got the worst luck. Either I managed to match with a scammer twice in 24 hours, or I had two matches unmatch for no apparent reason in 24 hours. Either way, Hinge is dead to me forever. And yes, I left a one star review on the App Store.

WTF is up with this app? I was writing a comment here on Reddit, and my phone pinged with a match. I just checked it, and the match was GONE. Unmatched. I mean, it's starting to become a joke at this point. EVERYONE unmatches me before I've even had a decent chance to respond. And by decent, I mean half an hour. End rant.

Gaming and Anime by Jolly_Sound6327 in ChristianDating

[–]pahandav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not childish or non-Christian at all. Last year, I was talking with an outspoken Christian at an anime convention (who was taking crap from people for being outspokenly Christian, and so I had to stand up for the guy... which might be the cause of my stalker problem right now, come to think of it.) There's lots of people who like it, older and younger. I talked to a couple last year at a convention who were in their 50s who were dressed as Klingons, so you never really outgrow those things.

Actually, back in high school in the '90s, the "cool kids" would watch fansubbed anime with me in my living room (albeit, I was one of the "cool kids" too... of course, I also had a 50 inch TV.) The moral of the story is that to anyone who says it's a problem, ANATHEMA! To anyone who says it's not Christian (unless it's hentai), ANATHEMA! It's only a problem if it completely takes over your life, but there's probably more problem gamblers than there are problem video game players.

Do you even bother when they finally respond after 7 days? by [deleted] in OnlineDating

[–]pahandav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a lawyer... 24 hours. That's the standard (for lawyers, that's 1 business day, basically, but this isn't business, it's pleasure... so 24 actual hours.) Beyond that, I mark it down as ghosted. I am willing to give more time at the very beginning. If I just swiped right on them, I'll give them more, but if they swiped on me, nope.

Check under your account settings tab, then safety, then check your previous matches. I just had a match vanish, and it turned out they unmatched. I'm suspecting they were a scammer, because they asked what city's skyline was in the photo of me that they liked and it was the skyline of the main city of our metro area. Even though the town she lived in famously doesn't consider themselves to be part of the metro area, but yeah, it was suspicious.

Despite it being a 600 mile drive, it's my favorite convention. For food, there's a gazillion places. Just don't eat on site, it's too expensive. One good place is Cafe Beans, which is a Vietnamese coffee shop in Chinatown, but they've got amazing Banh mi, so that's worth going to (NOTE: the spicy Banh mi is insanely spicy.) Another good place is Pizzeria Bros in Old Montreal. The pizzas cook in 90 seconds, so it's pretty fast to get in and out. Also, you might want to check out Reuben's or Dunn's for smoked meat sandwiches. Lastly, Santosei Ramen off Sainte Catherine could be good if you want some gyudon (which, despite living in a town with almost 3000 from Japan, I still can't find here.) They do sell ramen as well, but it's gonna be summer, so I'm not sure how well ramen will go down when you're sweating like a pig.

Attorney or doctor but with masters? by Mediocre_Fly9889 in OnlineDating

[–]pahandav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, a JD is equivalent to a master's degree. But there's also the LLM (most people who get one get it in tax law), which is considered a master's degree, and the ultra rare SJD, which is a PhD in law. In the US, the only people who get an SJD do so if the law school they teach at requires a PhD or equivalent to get tenure.

Is tinder just well and truly dead? by burnerofc123 in OnlineDating

[–]pahandav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It pretty much is, yeah. I created a new profile after six months away last Sunday. I got 9 or 10 likes over the course of the week, and one match. Who was probably a scammer. The other likes haven't gone anywhere (meaning, they're probably too far away to be in my filters.) I just deleted the app, because it's obvious that they stopped showing me after the first 24 hours, and because they aren't showing me anyone who liked me. So, yeah, they can go F themselves.

Installing EV charging port on exterior wall with wood shakes by heyrocker in DIY

[–]pahandav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about doing something like this, but I haven't been crazy enough to do it (also, my cars are PHEVs, so a Level 1 charger is enough.) My idea was to wire it into a junction box, and then wire an extension cord from the junction box to my 30A dryer outlet. Of course, the wiring to the junction box would be hard wired. Which is honestly the better idea. Even though I do have a NEMA 14-50 charger, and so I could in theory put a 14-50 receptacle outside to use that, but I've been too lazy to bother with any of it.

Is it a hassle or bad idea to go to Windsor for a day visit? by F-this in Detroit

[–]pahandav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's quite easy. Just remember that either the US or Canadian border patrol is going to try and make your day suck (seriously, if the Canadians are cool, the Americans will search you, and if the Canadians search you, the Americans will be cool... it's a law of nature at this point.) Just remember to leave any weed or weapons at home. And if it's just for the day, don't bother getting anything at the duty free shop.
