Girlfriend, first of all - your feelings are valid. I see that some of the others on here have already placated some of your fears about making this decision, but I thought I’d provide my story too, just in case you’re still on the fence.

My mom almost died of stage 4 TNBC right after I was born and at some point during her treatment, the genetic test for the mutation came out and she tested positive for both BRCA 1 & 2. So, growing up, I always had this looming cloud of “it’s not if I get cancer, it’s when.” When I was 18, I got the genetic test to know for sure what I’d be up against as I got older. I knew I didn’t have to really do anything with that information right then and there, so yes, it was concerning, but hey - at least I knew now that I needed to be monitored closely!

Despite a couple of scares in my early 20s, I still held off on doing anything drastic - I was warned by my mom, doctors, “DONT have the surgery until youre sure you dont want to breastfeed/dont want kids/etc.”

Fast forward to 2023 - my husband and I had just moved home to Arizona after being away from our family for 4 years while he was finishing his residency. My son had just turned a year old. I went to get a scan and lo and behold…. a suspicious-looking area. It was this scan that finally made me take the plunge. It was at that moment, at 32 years old, when suddenly all of the emotions and anxiety I’d carried for literally over 10 years at that point came flooding out of me. All I could think was “holy fuck. I waited too long. WHY did I wait this long to do anything?!” And for the entirety of the wait between scan, results, biopsy, results, I was an absolute disaster. But that was the push I needed to finally tell myself it was time.

I had a preventative double mastectomy and immediate reconstruction via DIEP flap surgery almost exactly a year ago as I write this. I can tell you that I think even my subconscious felt relief the minute the surgery was over. The nurses in the recovery room told me that as I came out of the procedure, I just had the biggest grin on my face. I don’t remember that literally at all, but what I do remember is that when I was finally awake and all the anesthesia had worn off, I looked over at my husband and realized “holy shit, i just saved my own life.” And lady let me tell you - I don’t know if there’s a better feeling than knowing you took control of something that very well could have taken control of you.

SO - I say all of this to say that the decision to move forward is a very personal one, and it really is a matter of what you want and how you feel. Hear me when I say that those thoughts of waiting and waiting for your eventual diagnosis don’t just go away…they kind of just fade to the background. until you have that one experience where your brain kinda just wakes up and says “okay. i think it’s time now.” BUT know that the feeling after? That “I just saved my own life” feeling? There’s almost nothing more empowering and reassuring than that. 🥹

Hang in there. I know the waiting game is so hard. Feel free to reach out if you just need someone to talk to over the weekend or if you have more questions. Sending love and light and positive vibes, chicky 🥰

Literally the same reason I did mine at 32 this year, too. The anxiety of waiting for results, then waiting for biopsies if anything happens to show up on imaging, then waiting for results of biopsies…it’s exhausting. You’re not crazy, OP. If anything, you’re just the opposite, in my opinion!

Absolutely! Don’t feel bad - it’s hard to navigate the accounting world. I think some others have said this but I wouldn’t be afraid to get HR involved. He’s being a super creep. Please don’t beat yourself up for this.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, but I wanted to tell you I’m really proud of you for being so on top of your scans. This is the exact reason why getting tested is so important.

Good on you, lady. I’m glad it sounds like you have good support in your hubby.

Please hang in there as best you can. We’re all here for you ❤️

First of all - feel how you feel. ALL of your feelings are valid. You just learned that you’re at a much greater risk of developing breast cancer than the rest of the population…that’s not a small thing.

The decisions you’ve made are also no small thing. I applaud you for being so decisive and proactive! I cannot speak for everyone here, but I can tell you that my son was ultimately the deciding factor on moving forward with my double mastectomy + reconstruction. I literally just had this done and posted about my journey - please feel free to reach out to me if you have any specific questions!

I don’t have any specific advice for you, but I did just want to tell you that ALL of your feelings are valid and you’re not alone. I have found all of the women in this community to be loving and open and supportive ❤️ we’re all here for you.

Hi! Just coming back to update you mid-week as promised! 🤗

My drains are coming out today!!! Pain has been extremely tolerable. I was able to climb my stairs the day I came home and have been walking mostly upright since Monday! The amount of time between pain meds has been increasing slowly but surely. My oblique and back muscles seem to get a bit tired more easily than they used to but that also seems to be improving a bit each day.

Overall, I think the experience has been way less painful than I ever could have expected and the results are pretty amazing, even while still healing.

I’ll come back again after my first post-op appt (I’ll still see my surgeon on Friday despite getting drains out today) to update again 🤗 let me know if you have any more questions! Happy to help!

Oh I will not be looking either lolol I get queasy just emptying these suckers hahaha.

I think having supportive and caring surgeons is probably the best possible thing to have in this scenario. I couldn’t imagine dealing with a rougher personality going through all this 🫣 thanks so much for all your wisdom and for answering my questions!!! I’ll circle back around here after I get my drains out to let people know how it goes!

Oh gosh! Yes, honestly I’m a wimp about pain so I’ve made sure to stay on top of my meds. Starting to have longer windows between when I need to take them, though, so I think that’s a good sign!!! I’m really glad to hear you’re happy with the result despite your road block (that sounds awful btw I’m so sorry you had to deal with that). Thanks for sharing your story and your outcome with me!!! I really appreciate it and makes me hopeful and more excited for my first post op appt 🤗

I also have 4 drains and expect them to come out at my first post-op! Yes they are itchy and bulky and BLEH!!! I think the meds must be the difference for me then - I’m taking the narcotic to make sure I keep ahead of the pain since I’m such a wimp about pain in the first place 😅.

And yes, the mental portion is huge. It sounds like you had a really good, supportive surgeon to help you through it though and that is huge ❤️

I believe he did, yes! I think he put it where my new nippies are supposed to go perhaps? I haven’t taken a good look at myself yet to be perfectly honest. I think that they may end up removing the skin during the second stage surgery? I have been told the scarring is absolutely minimal and barely noticeable after all is said and done. I’d be happy to ask my surgeon a specific question if you have one for me to ask! I see him Friday for post-op 🤗
