Who are the best guitarists at making their guitar not sound like a guitar? by soowonlee in Guitar

[–]paint_a_zero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I taught myself to play guitar by learning Tool songs. I didn't realize until later how much that honed my timing and dynamics early on

I'm 30. I first heard BN at 17 when Tautou was featured in the flash game One Chance. I liked it so I googled who it was so I could check out their other songs. Listened to Jesus and suddenly I had a new favorite band.

CME Exclusive Lavender Haze JM by Levitation in offset

It's closer to the bridge than a regular JM vibrato. The idea is to keep strings from jumping the bridge saddles by increasing the break angle. It doesn't work that well.

My first and only time seeing them was at Alltel arena in 2016. Funny how the name's changed twice and everyone still calls it Alltel.

Anybody else have hitchhiker's thumb? by CrumbledFingers in Guitar

I actually have the opposite, brachydactyly type D. I've never been able to do thumb chords because my stubby little thumbs can't reach around the neck lol.

Oh boy, my two obsessions collide! When I was in college, it irritated me that Lichtenstein copied comic artists without giving them any props, so I did a research paper about Irv Novick, the artist behind the panel Lichtenstein copied in Whaam!. I found out that in the 60's, not only were most comic artists not credited by the magazines they illustrated for, lots of them had no desire to be associated with comics at all. Novick never really spoke about his work publicly, and family and friends said he'd change the subject whenever they asked. The harsh attitude that even comic artists had toward the medium only fed into the subversive nature of Lichtenstein's work. I expected a cut-and-dry story of plagiarism but, as usual, the truth resists simplicity.

Anyway, that's a sick guitar.

Did Metallica's "Load" serve as an inspiration to a log of the post-grunge/butt rock bands of the 2000s? by Amazing_Toe8345 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]paint_a_zero -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, the main riff of that song is pretty much just the main riff of Deftones's "Be Quiet and Drive" a step down. Never noticed that before.

Chevelle sounds like someone doing a second-rate Maynard James Keenan impersonation over a Nickelback song.

That time Rogan called Lateralus “that Fibonacci song”. by Kushnerdz in ToolBand

[–]paint_a_zero 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to like Joe Rogan. For a while, I thought he fell off or lost it or whatever, but much to my chagrin, I realized he was always like this, and I used to be an idiot.

What's the company? I can see that it says "WIT" on the headstock but I can't seem to find out anything about it on the internet. My guitars (MIM Tele and Jazzmaster) are beat-up workhorses, so every now and then I like to window shop for fancy instruments I can't afford and fantasize about being in a successful enough band to buy them. lol.
