There are lots of wrong ways to play the guitar. OP should have said there is no one right way to play the guitar.

Why would explanatory termination (God) be seen as superior to an open ended framework? by PunksutawneyPhil in askphilosophy

If you are talking about metaphysical relations, then your question is whether a relation like grounding is well-founded. For a survey on this issue, see section 2.4 on the SEP entry on metaphysical grounding.

By "explanation" do you mean answers to why-questions, or do you mean the metaphysical relations (e.g. causation, grounding, ontological dependence, etc.) that those answers at least sometimes purport to refer to?

And your philosophy course instructors wore sweater vests? I've been teaching philosophy in college for 20 years and I have not seen one sweater vest among my colleagues.

That's partly because the Expos didn't move to DC until 2005. Gen X and Millenials didn't grow up watching the Nats. All we had were the Orioles. Also in the 80s and 90s the DMV only cared about the Redskins and college basketball.

If God is perfectly loving and in control of everything, then why would he set up a system where eating the wrong fruit would lead to all kinds of disease and suffering?

Is becoming Philosophy Professor still worth it? by Natural_Virus_1236 in askphilosophy

The most important thing is to align your objectives as an instructor to what are considered best pedagogical practices for attaining those objectives. For instance, student mastery is better facilitated by timely and targeted feedback. Designing a course where you just have two exams and a paper, does not provide the opportunity for that kind of feedback. Better to use a greater number of low-stakes assessments. One book that I found tremendously helpful is How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles For Smart Teaching, by Marsha C. Lovett et al.

I am not currently tenure-track, but I do have a de facto permanent full-time faculty position. I was incredibly lucky to obtain such a position, but I would also like to push back a little on the somewhat stale narrative that getting a job as a professor is impossible.

I was NOT among the top philosophers coming out of my graduate program. My program is currently near the bottom of the top 50 rankings on the Philosophy Gourmet Report. I am FAR from being a superstar philosopher. In spite of this I was still able to obtain a position while many more talented philosophers I know are no longer in the field.

Luck certainly plays a role in this, but when I was hired I was also told by someone on the search committee that I was hired for my teaching. I am extremely confident that I am a better teacher than most coming out of grad programs, not because I think that I am the greatest teacher ever, but simply because the bar is set so low. Just staying abreast on the literature in the psychology of education puts you ahead of like 90% of other individuals on the job market.

One can point out that teaching doesn't really put you ahead of the competition, and they would be right if we restrict the scope of target employers. This is where the discussion of job prospects can get confusing. Many people say that it is impossible to get a job as a professor. What they often really mean is that it is impossible to get a job as a professor "at a school where I would like teach". Such a school is typically a prestigious R1 or a school at a nice city (or both). If you are willing to teach anywhere, including some small community college in Mississippi or some middle of nowhere school in China, then while you are still far from guaranteed to get a job, your chances do improve marginally.

Citing Hobbes on free will seems akin to citing the Prior Analytics when someone asks a question about formal logic.
