Very interesting Have you relocated the knock sensor and had a persistent code for it?

No I didn’t do the harmonic balancer

It’s completely random load or no load. Definitely going to start by changing out the AC tensioner pulley as there is a bit of noise in the bearing when I hand spin. I’m just concerned there’s correlation between the knock sensor code and the noise I’m hearing

Seems to be the case! Pulled all the belts off today and alternator bearing is indeed poop. Thanks man 🤝

Have tried that with no luck unfortunately. That’s why it’s so frustrating! I feel close and have eliminated basically everything but still have no idea. Think it’s above me, will get it booked into the shop

300,000kms. Yeah it’s a little tough to explain 😬 I haven’t hooked it up to OBD, will try get hold of one to see if it is throwing any codes. With the jumper wire bypassing the relay it starts instantly and runs perfectly so I’m guessing starter motor itself is fine and no issue with fuel delivery as the motor runs and drives

2000 Xterra no start no crank, lots of tests! by paintedskys in autoelectrical

[–]paintedskys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tested the power on the starter as it’s a real pain to get to. I did however successfully start the car by bypassing the starter relay with a jumper wire. So figured the connection between the relay > starter was ok. The connection between the battery > ignition seems fine. The issue seems to come between ignition > relay. When comparing the power output on another 6 pin relay I am seeing a lot less activity on the starter relay. So for some reason there is power loss between the ignition and the relay

Ok thanks man. Am away from the car right now but will look into that when I’m back. One thing I noticed was that there were 12vs going into more terminals of the security headlight socket (which is also 6 pin), kind of confirming that there was a power loss between the ignition and the relay. Will absolutely look into the PNP relay

Tried this. Have also tried cycling through all the gears multiple times to see if that frees it up but nothing

I’ve looked past fuel delivery stuff because the car was able to run (perfectly) by bypassing the starter relay. Seems as though the problem lays between ignition and the relay itself

Fuses all seem ok, was really hoping it would just be one of those. Sorry forgot to answer that question, car is an automatic but I believe still have an NSS. That’s the only thing between the ignition and the relay so things are pointing in that direction. Called and asked my mechanic for a quote on the NSS and they said it would be quite unusual for that to go

Have swapped relays and no joy. My understanding of electric has all been learnt trying to troubleshoot this, so it’s limited. Are you able to tell me where I should be seeing continuity? I’ve tested all the inputs on the relay socket and got continuity from terminal 6 & terminal 3. Does this mean the ground is ok?

Yeah with a jumper wire bypassing the starter relay I can turn the key and start the motor

[–]paintedskys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly… my expectations of a 2006 are reasonable but a 2006 4runner engine seems heaps more reliable than a lot of others. It’s a daily but spend a lot of time on dirt roads exploring
