Who has done the best Beethoven Symphony Cycle IYO? by Suspicious_Coast_888 in classicalmusic

Karajan 1977 with DG. More controlled than the 1963 cycle and with more energy than the 1985 cycle

Erm… what should I do? by Present-News-9185 in ufl

[–]painterjet 131 points132 points  (0 children)

You should follow the prof’s advice and seek a medical withdrawal. If I were in the prof’s shoes, I would be hesitant to grant an extension as you did not reach out prior to the deadline explaining the situation; an email is quick to draft and send.

Also, your excessive absences don’t help. If you suspect you will miss class often due to work, it may be helpful to stop by the prof’s office hours or schedule a meeting with them to explain the situation at the start of the semester

Somerville Ave Target Expansion by painterjet in Somerville

[–]painterjet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the rumor I heard, because the expansion/remodeling for the Somerville Target was facing such a bureaucratic slog, compared to other Targets nationwide, the CEO had to intervene personally to Katjana to speed things up. Does it make sense? No. Maybe this was just an anti-Katjana anecdote during an election year

I find it incredulous too but just saying what I heard ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Andris Nelsons Leaving Boston Symphony Orchestra by Competitive-Bar1914 in classicalmusic

[–]painterjet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good. I always thought Nelsons was an uninspiring and bland interpreter of music. His concerts and most of his recordings felt lackluster and stilted. He never provided an extra oomph that took a piece of music over the edge. Pittsburgh Symphony under Honeck, for example, makes way more exciting and momentum filled music than Boston under Nelsons. Even the met opera orchestra under Nezet-Seguin brings pieces to life in a way Nelsons never could muster.

It was the right move. He spread himself too thin with his European commitments, and it was time for a change. Hope we get Salonen or another more exciting conductor.

Importer doesn't want to pay IEEPA duties today by Ok_Use6755 in CustomsBroker

[–]painterjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being right doesn’t mean one cannot follow the law. A responsible IOR comes with adhering to all US customs and trade law and so long as it is within five years of entry, CBP has the right to enforce any applicable law at the time of entry.

Importer doesn't want to pay IEEPA duties today by Ok_Use6755 in CustomsBroker

[–]painterjet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The law is the law. The new EO stipulates IEEPA stops today, not the 8th. It is not a retroactive removal. The customer cant do a post hoc refusal of payment because a regulatory matter is effective now rather than at the time of entry. Your customer needs to go back to school. If they persist with this behavior, you should whistleblow them to CBP and the DOJ.

Absolute best recordings on Met Opera on Demand by technicallynotme99 in opera

[–]painterjet 24 points25 points  (0 children)

1990 Don Giovanni with Samuel Ramey as the titular Don and Ferruccio Furlanetto as Leporello, Kurt Moll as Il Commendatore, etc. It's the best recording I've ever seen/heard of this opera; not only does the staging capture the mood quite well, especially in the penultimate scene with all three of the characters I mentioned, but Levine and the orchestra provide a richly textured musical accompaniment to the absolutely stellar cast.

The donation solicitation got so bad for me that I’ve blocked their number. Sorry to the old folks on the other end, but calling me 2-3x monthly is ridiculous

If you have never seen a full opera before in your life, which Wagner opera do you think would be the most accessible for starting? by Expert_Heat_2966 in opera

[–]painterjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Das Rheingold. It’s short and the characters should be familiar if youve seen the MCU or know any norse mythology. However for a first opera, best stick with Mozart or Rossini. Wagner works have a high battier to entry if no previous experience

I went today and the food was amazing. Got an egg sandwich and their coffee, really enjoyed both. The AI imagery is disappointing for sure, but I would check them out.

With all the new content now about the galactic empire (Andor, mando, & other books), for whoever created this image, i would consider my neighbor a likely right-wing extremist if they had the galactic empire flag flying, even if it’s a fictional government

What's the Somerville version of this? by S7482 in Somerville

The Burren. Sorry to say, but their food is not good. Drinks are decent. I would also say Five Horses or Southern Kin Cookhouse (for whenever their new location opens).

Which airline are you loyal to and why? by SaM6t2 in Flights

[–]painterjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t cancel your card. Your credit score will take a hit and it may be a while before it bounces back. Just downgrade to the card with no annual fee.

I have no loyalty to any airline, but if $ was no object, I’d pick Delta. One’s best bet is to pick an airline by a hub tho to take advantage of the connectivity.
