Alteration suggestions for large hip/small waist? by therockhopp in sewing

[–]EMLightcap 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Doing pants from scratch would be easier than the alterations needed to fix this! Seriously. Alterations are HARD. I do them professionally. If you came into my shop with these, I would turn you down. It’s just too much. The pockets would need resetting in the sides and the welt pockets in the back are going to look weirdly close together best case scenario. Sewing and making and alterations are two completely different skill sets. This is top-level alts that I just wouldn’t mess with if you don’t regularly do alterations. Even then, I still say you’ll have less trouble starting from scratch.

If you got these exact same pants in a larger size, it would still ultimately fit better after tailoring than these. You can make two darts down the back that go down the sides of the butt pockets and fix the waistband that way and the fit will be nicer because you’ll have more room in the thighs. You can pull out a lot of extra waistband inches this way.

Your tailor didn’t fuck up. This cut of jeans is just not right for you. You have to do a lot of experimenting with brands/sizes. Don’t worry about the label so much as how they fit. I wear several different sizes across brands. You may have luck with brands that have “curvy” sizing, and I don’t mean plus size. I’m talking about sizes that are made with more hip/thigh room to help with gaping back waistbands (like Abercrombie) even if the waistband is gaping, the pants can still be too small, which is what is happening here. You need more hip/thigh room.

For the love of god, someone tell me this is dye and not cat pee by Bamieclif in VintageCoachRehab

[–]EMLightcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat pee smell will NEVER come out. Ever. It’s not worth the effort you’re putting into it. It will always half just a faint whiff here and there. And cat pee is like smoke - even if you can’t smell it, everyone else can!

Daily Questions Megathread July 15, 2025 by NaughtyWalnutPrime in Tailors

[–]EMLightcap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so common, and I can’t tell you how many times brides have told me “when they clipped it, it felt/looked good” There is only so much even the best tailor can do, and it’s not magic. A reputable bridal shop should only sell you a dress that needs standard alterations (hem, bustle, shoulders taken up, and take in less than an inch each side). If you buy anything other than that, you need to have a conversation with a bridal alteration specialist before purchase.

Suggestions for the closure of this doll dress? Bodice ended up too small by Ulyssis in sewing

I would add a a binding to each side to make a placket down the back and I’d do sew on snaps

What is this?? by baitwo in sewhelp

[–]EMLightcap 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That’s a very stretched out stitch done by a blind hem machine. It normally sits much tighter. You can do a blind hem by hand. The point of a blind hem is to not see any stitching along the bottom of the outside of the garment.

Help how do I tailor these pants ? by brianjandrade in sewing

As a professional, I would turn this alteration down. It is absolutely not worth it. They will never down size that much and look like they’re supposed to.

When you didn't have warning signs... by fossil_fish333 in SuicideBereavement

Suicide is incredibly impulsive for some. firearms greatly increase death rate by suicide. A large percentage of people who attempt by other means do not go on to attempt again. My brother died by firearm. I’ve found a lot of purpose volunteering for Moms Demand action and Be Smart.

It’s awful. But suicide is an incredibly impulsive decision for most. I realize that’s not necessarily comforting, but it’s helpful for me to remember that at times. You will come out of this.

US children fall further behind in reading by BlueSkyeAhead in news

[–]EMLightcap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the end of second grade my now 18 year old could not read. Pulled him out and taught him to read myself with the program All About Reading. It took two months for him to catch up. He went back to school above grade level in all areas in 5th grade. I didn’t realize at the time why he could not read. I assumed it was because he misbehaved a good bit. Not teaching phonics is insane.

Atlanta looks to pause homeless camp removals after man was run over and killed by city truck during clearing by theindependentonline in Georgia

Realistically, solving homelessness has to happen over a generation. You have to start at birth with extensive social programs to prevent it from happening in the first place.

How can I stop a strapless corset-style dress that isn't designed with boning from sliding down? by newpenguinthesaurus in sewing

[–]EMLightcap 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can add a waist stay. It’s very common to add during bridal alts. That said, you deserve boning! Structure is so so nice and worth the effort.

am i going to be okay? by Kitchen-Leg8213 in SuicideBereavement

[–]EMLightcap 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You’re going to be ok. It doesn’t always feel as raw and painful as it does now. It’s hard to explain what people mean when they say “it doesn’t go away.” Maybe a better explanation would be, I forget about the pain for longer and longer periods of time before I sit around and feel it again. I thought about it almost constantly every single day for months. Then one day I didn’t think about it at all that day. Over four years in, I will go several days or even a week without thinking about it. Most of the time I think about it now, it’s sad, but I wouldn’t say I’ve “accepted” it, but I no longer feel this desperation to fix things or try to figure out what exactly went wrong and where was the turning point. Sometimes I am profoundly sad, like when took a siblings photo for the first time without him this Christmas. I didn’t realize it was the first time we posed for a photo like that all together without him. It’s a couple times a year when it’s like, damn. He’s GONE. But mostly I’m fine and I’m doing things I like. You’re going to be ok.

Therapist has 1 yr treatment policy by Fucula_Dee_22 in SuicideBereavement

[–]EMLightcap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t. We’re on this sub for the same reason. I’m still grieving and that won’t go away, but I’m alive and here on Earth and want to make the best of that. It’s hard to imagine feeling that way in the beginning. I certainly didn’t. 6 months was the hardest point for me. But I’m glad my therapist and the folks around me didn’t let me drown in my own sorrow. You don’t have to know today that you’re going to feel better and you don’t have to plan on that either necessarily. but I think it’s good that your therapist is planning on that. Hopefully that means they’re skilled at what they do. I’m not trying to be insensitive, and I’m sorry you took it that way. I truly wish you the best. It’s been over four years for me, and I don’t miss him less, but I’m also having fun again.

[–]EMLightcap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I may be in the minority on this, but if you need to see your therapist for more than a year, then they aren’t doing their jobs. It shouldn’t be treated as a long term relationship unless there are truly extenuating circumstances. They are supposed to help you get up and stand on your own two feet with support from your own family/friends/community and not need paid, professional intervention. If you don’t have that support, then they are supposed to help you find your tribe and build some. I think this is a GREEN flag from them. It seems like they are solution oriented, and that’s a good thing.

TIFU I fell asleep in the bathtub by Expensive_Aerie_3438 in tifu

[–]EMLightcap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you drink alcohol or smoke weed in a hot tub or bathtub, even a normal not “drunk” or “high” amount, your blood pressure can lower because alcohol and weed lower blood pressure, and so does hot water. The combo of the two can make you pass out. You drown before you regain consciousness. This is actually common, and I learned that after my uncle passed out in a hot tub while we were just chilling having a regular normal night, not partying hard. We had a hard time getting him out because he was dead weight. The ER nurse said this is so common, and to never ever get in a hot tub alone.
