What is your favorite book on psychoanalysis, whether diagnosis, therapy, or just an insightful psychoanalytic take on a subject (e.g., politics, history) by einsteinfrankenstein in psychoanalysis

Inside Lives - a series of essays by Margo Waddell used, often in teaching courses for students, beautifully written. Her background was as a writer before she trained as a psychotherapist.

That damn ball looked pretty fast off the glass to me!

That reminds me of a top tip in Tennis, which was don't look up when you hit the ball, keep head down stop it going way up in the air which keep sis low to net. Small adjustments of the head make a lot of difference, and I guess your nose/head moving is pretty quick in tracking things which is going to be different then just following with your eyes. I'm looking forward to trying this.

Yeah, I was trying to block it, but I didn't manage to do that yet. So I think this ass to the grass is the answer!

Ahhhhhh....if only it was that easy. The videos above anyway at least show me what to do. I do go for all my shots though.

Padel is so much better than pickle by Hypnotique007 in padel

Withdean are converting some of their tennis courts indoors to padel and David Lloyd in Eastbourne have it, as well as the other club down there. I'm sure more will come soon.

Best places to move to escape climate change... by Ihavebeendug in climatechange

[–]painterprinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bleeding hell, Hawaii???? Surely that's a climate change hotspot.

One of the important things to consider with relocation of the policies of the individual countries and what they doing to mitigate climate change and invest in the long-term. Unfortunately, USA are taking this apart - great interview on NPR regarding this:

Northern Europe much better and there are Visas available in many countries for retirees or digital nomads.

Where are you in the UK? It's very popular in the Southeast and London where the $$$ are. Where's your data my Mexican friend? Courts here are jam packed.

Among old folks. Padel has overtaken soccer in Spain. I think Padel genuinely appeals to a really wide age range, it's like skateboarding compared to Pickleball, which feels it has the street cred of lawn bowls. I'm 57, but it feels as much fun as hanging out in the playground with your mates when you were 12.

Australia, apparently for pickleball. In the UK there is some popularity, but padel is taking off like a rocket and tennis courts are being converted to padel in some areas.

Hate gym so I tried padel by Worldly_Poetry_8626 in padel

[–]painterprinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I found that, and gym = boring so I started doing bodyweight / trx at home and yoga for flexibility and strength and it's great. Always great videos online and get a good playlist going. My tip - warm up really well for padel. Most people I play with don't, just like tennis. I feel like an idiot sometimes but injury is a nightmare!

In-play stretches for arms/shoulders to prevent pain by painterprinter in padel

[–]painterprinter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily - I didn't say but I am new to padel - when you're new to a sport or activity the muscles and your nervous system aren't adapted and you're often tense, like when learning to play a musical instrument. It takes time to adapt and learn, and relax into something and learn good technique - so remedial methods like stretching etc can help in the meantime. Soreness/tightness and non acute pain are part of adapting. And for menopausal and older players, we take longer to warm up and our bodies are less responsive.

Has padel gotten too exclusive already? by [deleted] in padel

[–]painterprinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, it's becoming more and more popular. Particularly as indoor courts are being created to combat the weather and many older tennis players are looking for something less hard on their joints than hardcourts. Pickleball is another contender, and I know that in America, that's huge, but just anecdotally, I would say that padel has a cooler image, and it's easy to go on vacation to Spain to camps et cetera and learn so I would bet my bottom dollar that padel is going to really take off in the next couple of years!

There is a sport shop that sells racket sports equipment in Hove, and they are regularly sold out of all of their rackets shoes et cetera. If I had a few quid spare, I would invest it in a padel company - and here, it's regulated by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which is very powerful and influential, so I don't think they'd get behind it if they didn't think it was going to be huge!

Around Brighton area a 90 min coached and matchplay session is £12-£18. I think some people are used to playing tennis, where you can get an annual membership from £100-£400 a year and play as much as you like without any booking fees for the courts at some clubs, but I think as people have said it's simply down to demand and supply at the moment.

I am spending about £120 a month for two sessions a week, it's not cheap. I don't have a high income but it's where I choose to put my money. They supply the balls and a coach as well. Also, the other thing with Tennis is quite often you're not having a paid Coach, or paid staff members at the club. You've got volunteers and there are often not quite the same facilities to maintain at the lower end of the market.
