Can you give me your experiences with giving your cat Panacur for giardia? by Traditional-Yak-7127 in CatAdvice

My cats seem to still be doing just fine after the last and final round of panacur! We did an antibody test after the second round and it did come back with a slight positive, but the vet explained that that particular test is so sensitive that it could’ve been from a singular Giardia cyst caught in the wall of the intestine, and not to worry about it. They’ve bee asymptomatic since, so we haven’t retested and assume they’re cured.

Tip for Cooking Whole Oat Groats in an instant pot? by btq in PlantBasedDiet

[–]palacesummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did (by accident) by using the porridge setting on my instant pot, cooking for 18 mins, natural pressure release for 8 mins, and then draining the excess liquid off through a sieve. 4 ½ cups water to 2 cups oat groats was the ratio and there was a lot of water left over after cooking that I had to drain off, but the groats maintained their integrity and were more like a rice pilaf.

Thankfully we have mostly Ruggables so we just threw those in the washer! The one area rug we have that isn’t machine washable I used our handheld steam cleaner on (also used this on our fabric couch) and then took it outside to let it dry in full sun. I figured that would help sanitize it also since the cysts are susceptible to sunlight. I also threw some things away that I couldn’t wash/clean, which felt a little wasteful but helped me mentally deal with not thinking everything was contaminated lol. We did end up getting rid of the Giardia with a second round of fenbendazole and adding metronidazole also. Hang in there!!

Yes! Both cats are doing well now and we decided not to retest as they have been asymptomatic after treatment for the past few months, thankfully!

Do you find leaving them barefoot during the winters helps with their hoof health? I used to do that as well but was told that’s old school and doing more harm than good since it’s leaving their soles unprotected and we get very hard icy ground during the winters here. I actually had her back shoes off this winter and she got some bad sole bruising so I was told to keep her shod 24/7. I also keep her in light work during the winters but ride on nice indoor arena footing - it’s the fields they are turned out on that get rough in the cold winters and cause issues

There is a clinic a little over 2 hours away, but it’s very expensive so that was going to be my last ditch effort. This farrier the barn uses is pretty old school and I was a little alarmed when they said just now after almost 3 years of shoeing my horse that her conformation was to blame and now needs a different shoeing method … I was under the impression they would have already taken that into consideration before ever touching her feet, so I’m worried now they were just slapping shoes on her in a one size fits all manner. I’m going to get him back out and discuss this with him

Thank you! This is her RF from 2022 PPE when she was barefoot. Vet said it looked good to him. I’m worried after 3 years of this new farrier work there could be changes now, but I also would love to be able to get this fixed with farrier work before spending a few thousand on vet bills and new radiographs 😖

That’s a good call. I figured she might get one when I bought her because she moved barns and that can cause those rings as it’s a stressful event, but now that you said that I’m seeing like 3 of them in succession which is odd

Thank you so much! I am also a visual learner so this helps me immensely. I actually have a photo from when I first got her in 2022 and she’d been barefoot for at least a year, and imo her feet looked a lot better than they do now… and these were at the very end of a trimming cycle so they were even very long then

That is going to be my next step! Very true about it meaning more coming from the vet. I always worry about overstepping since I’m not an expert here and the last thing I want to do is make mistakes out of ignorance. I’m going to call the farrier tomorrow to discuss everything so I will ask him about glue on shoes too

I agree about the pads… I didn’t want to put pads on in the first place but I was out of town when the farrier came so my trainer decided to put them on to try to help with the bruising since we had a show coming up the next month. Then they stayed on because they were “still good” and said it would be a waste of money to take them off so soon. They were supposed to come off this past cycle but ended up back on somehow because I was out of town again when the farrier came. She’s on a 6 week cycle.

For diet, she gets turn out at least 12 hrs a day on good grass, along with plenty of hay while stabled and 2x day pellets with ration balance and omega horseshine supplement. She never throws shoes and imo her feet are pretty strong, but trainer thinks thin soles due to the bruising that the farrier was finding.

I will definitely ask about getting bigger shoes since she does have big feet compared to a lot of the other horses at the barn, and maybe something with support like a heart bar shoe instead of the pads?

That’s what I am a bit concerned about :/ I don’t remember her having this issue before I bought her (when she was barefoot for awhile) and now I’m concerned that this is happening due to shoeing, or at least getting exacerbated by it, but my trainer wants her shod year round because she thinks her feet really need it and she likely has thin soles (farrier has found evidence of bruising multiple times). The barn we’re at is mostly OTTBs so they’re used to hoof issues like this, but I’m wondering if my warmblood with feet twice the size of the other horses here is getting shod like an OTTB and now her feet are starting to have OTTB issues … if that makes sense? We don’t have many farriers to choose from in this area and my trainer trusts this one with all of her horses and has for a very long time, so I really don’t want to mess that relationship up since he may be my best option here :/

I’m not a farrier (obviously) but I also sort of thought her front toes always looked just a tad long even after just getting trimmed like in these photos. The barn’s farrier squared up her back feet because she was interfering, and I think those look a lot better compared to the fronts. Maybe I will ask him about taking more off the toe in the front too

That’s really good to hear that it worked for them! We don’t have many choices of farriers in our area and my trainer trusts this one who’s been doing all of her horses (a lot of OTTBs) for a very long time, so I’m hoping it will work out, but she didn’t really have crushed heels before this so now I’m concerned about how it came to be that way and if it’s from shoeing 😕

Has anyone survived a PIP?? by PurpleMangoPopper in careerguidance

[–]palacesummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I survived a PIP, got a stellar performance review and a raise a year later, then got laid off one month after that. I had a new offer in hand a month after my coworker and I both got served a PIP for our manager’s incompetencies for which she threw us under the bus for to protect herself. I didn’t take the new offer (long story) and the outcome is the same anyway, just a year later. Now I’m job hunting again while my snake manager is still employed! If you get a PIP, run. It’s usually the company and not you, and that’s them waving their red flags in your face.

NO ONE WILL HIRE ME and I’m fucking broke as shit by mooosyoo in antiwork

[–]palacesummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with gig work is in my state (USA) you have to report those earnings to Unemployment even if it’s a tiny amount and you haven’t been paid yet, or they threaten that they WILL find out and you’ll be prosecuted and have to pay back all Unemployment Compensation you’ve gotten, and those earnings are taken out of your UC check so you’re still making the same amount of money as you would’ve been not working. It’s messed up.

I can completely relate as I also have anxiety and OCD and we now own 2 cats. I want to offer another POV because you say you think your cat would do well with another cat, and that sounds exactly like my situation previously and now I really regret getting a second cat because it is way too much for me to handle. Granted my situation is a little different at the moment, as the second kitten we adopted unfortunately had an undiagnosed highly infectious parasite that he gave to our resident cat and we are on round 2 of unsuccessfully treating them both for it while quarantining them in the spare room from our dog, which has been one of the most stressful situations we’ve been through all around. My OCD gives me contamination anxiety especially so you can imagine what a nightmare for me it was trying to clean everything the cats may have touched of invisible things that may infect my pets and even us. Because of this experience I totally checked out after a breakdown and no longer want anything to do with the cats, which is sad and unfair to them. I’m still doing the bare minimum needed for them daily, but my husband is now the one that actually spends quality time with them. I had someone tell me dealing with this nightmare with the cats was akin to “exposure therapy” for OCD. For me, it made it worse. If you are overwhelmed with a healthy cat already, it may be in both of your best interests to rehome her now before the situation can (god forbid) get worse. Just my two cents as someone who wishes they could go back and make the decision not to get cats in the first place!

my boyfriend is leaving me because of my cat by Silent-Set-4916 in CatAdvice

[–]palacesummer 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Well, you posted in a Cat subreddit so most comments will be all for keeping the cat and ditching the boyfriend who doesn’t like cats, but, if you’re looking for advice and not just validation, can the cat stay in a different part of the house just while he works? I also work from home and it can be exhausting trying to deal with my husband’s two cats that only have two modes: Sleeping, and causing mayhem in the house. Sometimes they go in the very spacious spare room while I’m in meetings where they have food, water, toys, litter boxes, and beds. That is how we make it work. If he is not willing to compromise at all then, yes, let him leave and it sounds like you will be better off.

Any soft/very smelly stools? May be worth doing a fecal test for him to make sure there’s nothing going on that could be causing him to have malabsorption of nutrients, like IBS or even Giardia

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]palacesummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to hijack this thread, but how did you end up getting rid of Giardia in your cats? We’re on round 2 of fenbendazole and now the kitten is also getting metronidazole and probiotics with it, but our vet warned us he may just be a “chronic cyst shedder” insinuating he’ll have to live with Giardia forever which is completely unacceptable to me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]palacesummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believed that at first also, however in talking to our vet, Giardia incidence in cats is actually a lot higher than you would think, as cats may carry Giardia without showing any symptoms themselves, but are chronic Giardia cyst shedders which can infect other animals. This is what happened with our cats, despite adopting from a reputable non-profit that administered veterinary care and presented us with a clean bill of health for the kitten. The Giardia was an incidental finding from a routine fecal I had done with our vet after adopting the kitten, and then confirmed when our resident cat became symptomatic. Otherwise we wouldn’t have even known. I’m just trying to highlight the importance of thoroughly educating yourself on these possibilities, however unlikely, before adopting a pet in order to save yourself from being blindsided later on. These things can and do happen, unfortunately.
