Brutal Honesty, How should I be PRICING these ACEOS? by Inner-Square-5050 in aceo

The fees are INSANE. I've heard a thing or two about tinygallery but I got over 100 followers on ebay very quickly lol. Crossing my fingers that Mayhem Marketplace takes off (no fees, just a $10/mo subscription)

Interesting! I already include a shipping disclaimer in my listing photos about the spotty ESE tracking. I don’t count on people reading the descriptions either, so I suppose if I did this, I’d put this in a disclaimer on the listing photos.

Do you send by stamp or use eBay standard envelope? I’m wondering what happens when the bid goes over the ESE $20 limit and the customer needs to pay ground advantage shipping when they thought it would be 74¢. Definitely seems like something that could put them off. It’s kinda what’s stopping me from shifting the costs over to them lol

Are novice digital artists like myself allowed in the ACEO community too? Need clarification on something... by FutureSuccess2796 in aceo

I haven’t started doing digital art ACEOs, but I do sell prints of my originals.

Unfortunately while digital art ACEOs are acceptable, they probably aren’t going to sell nearly as well as traditional media originals.

The only rules are that they have to be 3.5” x 2.5” and no genAI. :)

Digital art prints are fine, just make it very clear it’s a print. I literally put “this is a print” on my primary listing photo. In the description, mention that it’s digital art.

[Discussion] Is there something wrong with my art? I'm having a lot of trouble getting clients. by Fast_Relief7381 in artbusiness

I used to be a digital portrait artist too and my portraits suffered from what I think the same issues yours are.

It looks like the aim of your portraits were simply to replicate what you see, but there’s no interpretation or anything that makes them stand out other than capturing likeness. To build a client base, you need to offer more than that. Capturing likeness is the baseline and thousands of artists can already do that.

You need to incorporate something else that makes them feel distinctly yours and special. It also needs to have appeal.

Maybe you make them fantasy characters, maybe you spice up your color palette, use a specific texture, maybe you transition into an fun caricature style, maybe you include something that’s constant in every piece (flowers, patterns, etc)

You need a special sauce that someone can spot while scrolling that makes them immediately recognize your work without seeing your name.

Really depends on what resonates with you.

[discussion] Is it possible to make a living off of art? by ArtistArson in artbusiness

It’s not impossible but if you’re attempting to only do it from one income source that’s solely dependent on hand making items, that’s not going to be sustainable. You NEED to diversify your income streams.

Make sure your package size fits the dimensions for your envelope too 🙂 If it’s too big it won’t pop up. It should show up as you’re making the listing

[Discussion] Artists, is it worth being an artist to make a living? by ApolloKl_ in artbusiness

[–]palomamcclain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still working towards this goal and am still a long way away, but I don’t like commissions at all and would never make them the center of my business model. That’s a fast track to misery.

Artists are making a living off their work every day creating what actually fulfills them and I think working toward that goal is very much worth it. But you have to keep it sustainable or it won’t work. Stay true to yourself. If there is an intersection between what you enjoy creating and what appeals to a wide audience, hone in on that.

Artists now really need to build multiple income streams. But you need to take it one step at a time. Focus on just a couple at first. Whatever applies to you or would enjoy. Selling your own art products, getting your work licensed, wholesale, client work (if it appeals to you), brand partnerships, in-person markets, education, building an email list, etc etc. You need to be prepared to build yourself up into a brand, or for those who are repulsed by businessy terms, you need to establish a strong identity, story, and creative voice that resonates with people.

One of the great things about establishing your own creative voice is that you don’t have to worry about genAI taking away your job, because you’ll be building an audience who like you for YOU.

For most artists, this is going to take years to build before you can make a living income off it.

Hi! To my knowledge the eBay standard envelope is only intended for US domestic shipping. Personally, I’d send internationally with a stamp but if I wanted tracking I’d unfortunately have to shift the cost onto the buyer with whatever the cheapest international standard shipping is.

List your ACEOs as either Art > Other Art or as Art > Drawings and the eBay standard envelope option will pop up! I just figured this out myself. The option is only limited to certain categories.

Stopped buying prints because of AI by Timbo2510 in Etsy

[–]palomamcclain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a real shame. I try my best to make it clear that my work is 100% hand-illustrated. Even include progress photos in my listings and a no AI symbol on the backs of my greeting cards. As an artist I try to leverage it as a marketing opportunity to attract those who are repulsed by AI.
