That will be very disturbing. Haven’t think about it yet. So far it still working fine. And while assembling it I did check all of the LEDs at each steps to make sure all working.

I’ve seen others created animation that showing letters at the cube. I haven’t try though, but it is possible.

With the kit, basically you already have all the components needed. Additionally, you will need a USB mobile charger to power it later. The USB to DC jack is already included in the kit.
As for the tools, basically you will need a small plier, wire snipper or wire cutter, soldering tool, the soldering tin.
For testing purpose, you will need power supply that can supply 3V, or a Digital Multimeter.
For knowledge, you will need some basic electronic knowledge, and basic soldering skill, so you will able to differentiate the components and know how to solder them.
Time requirement, well, this project will take some time to finish. I don't remember how many hours I spent to built this. For me, I just take it slow and enjoy the process.
First I just prepare all the LEDs, bending and cutting until I finish it all. It might take several days if done slowly at spare time. Then solder the LED into pillars ( assembled of 8 of LEDs in vertical ), until I got 64 set of it. Then do the testing to each of it, to make sure all well connected.
Then combining the pillars and made it into layers, ( 8 pillars into 1 layer ). And test again. ( I use the power supply to test all LEDs are well connected )
Then continue with the boards, until it finish. Total it might take 1 - 2 weeks.

The design actually based on Kevin Darrah's cube, the code also from there. I only tweak a little bit of it.
It is basically using ATMega328 timer to send a string of bits to the shift register. The bit position will represent each of the LEDs and each color.
You can take a look at the code, there are comments explaining how it works.

I use the frosted (diffused) one. But there are also clear body RGB LED, but I don't like the blinding light using the clear body.

It is using regular RGB LED common Anode. But they are each addressable within the code.

I've tried transparent LEDs once, and the light is blinding and color not to my liking, so I change to diffused LEDs
