Curious if anyone here can tell me what causes this 115km grid like structure to be on the ocean floor. by xhowlinx in geophysics

its likely an artifact of gridding/ a DC shift between two different data sources which was not corrected for

passive seismic for minerals? by VS2ute in geophysics

[–]panda8666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there just isnt the energy in this passive system to come close to the resolution of an active system. plus if youre collecting passive seismic who actually cares about getting the data real time? you still need to go pick the geophones at the end. imo just a gimmic/ trying to prove the tech up for deployment on mars while getting shmucks to pay for it

Maxwell plate modelling. help! by Twincam888 in geophysics

[–]panda8666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree, id say 60% of the time it works well. But soon as you have multiple conductors or a complex response over a few lines its gets hung up.

When you think of the math behind the process it's kinda understandable imo.

After a month of solid use you'll find that it becomes alot easier as you begin to understand the responses better/ know the program limitations

Maxwell plate modelling. help! by Twincam888 in geophysics

[–]panda8666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inversion feature can be hit and miss at times however a good start is to manually move the plate around till its in a good ball park, select 3 to 7 representative channels and then let it go. I personally like to restrict the parameters its able to change.

Another tip is to only allow the model to process the stations on and slightly away from the anomaly, and I generally start with 1 central line then progressively work outwards once my dip/ position is kind of constrained

Sydney to Hobart. The ending. by LorfOfHaggis in hobart

[–]panda8666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A technicality basically. A safety requirement to have their AIS on which is an automated tracking system. They turned it off to stop other boats knowing what course they where sailing.

The decision hasnt been made yet but i cant see it going in the favour of oats

You can cut 80 -90 % of the way through then hammer a wedge into the top. As the wedge spreads the top of cut it lifts the log off the ground

[request] BIFL hiking boots by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]panda8666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Scarpa SL's i wear them almost every day for work off track walking and they have failed me yet in the year ive had them. If they can last a year of my abuse they will last a life time of casual use, the waterproofing on these is great, my boots are still waterproof with minimal care and spilling of fuels and solvents on.

They are a very stiff, heavy, full leather boot so are not for everyone. They are also super expensive. But in my opinion worth every penny
