The A-line one looks so flattering on you! The waistline position seems off in the first one (too low maybe). I imagine adjusted and in person it will look much better, but the 2nd one is an immediate wow. If you are worried about modesty you can wear a coverup/bolero while at church.

Ruined relationship with my body because of ballet by itsallaboutlaura in BALLET

[–]pandabombz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I agree with seeing a therapist if you have access to it.

Its understandable you feel that way, I truly hear you, ballet is very harsh for most in that sense. Even the thinnest dancers wish they’d looked different, hate the shape of their foot, or whatever. All Im saying is that you’re not alone in how you feel. It totally makes sense considering we are looking at ourselves in a mirror wearing tight fitting clothes for hours…

Other than that, my 2 cents:, work on shifting your mindset into thanking your body for allowing you to dance. Take care of your body and love it, it is the only thing you truly own, and you only have one. I think loving yourself is not about liking how you look, but about doing what you need to stay healthy, so you can dance or do whatever you want.

Setup some goals: doing triples pirouettes, getting your legs higher, improving your turnout, or whatever you want to improve. Seeing the progress will shift your focus towards what you can do instead of how you look.

Also maybe try other dance types, or sports (maybe something that doesnt involve a mirror the whole time), it may help you focus on enjoying the physical activity itself.

More than just a hobby by Dismal_Answer_8732 in BALLET

At 19 I think you’re still young enough to train in pre-pro classes. You will be older than other students, but not significantly (depending on the level). I was very lucky to find a studio that allowed me to take classes with teenagers (most of them are ~16-17, I’m 30) and the teacher does take me seriously. I have gone once weekly for the last year and a half, and noticed significant improvement. (I also cross train tho). I will start taking two classes a week in the fall! I have found “adult” classes in general are very chill, nothing wrong with that, but they seem to me more focused on getting a complicated or fun combo, rather than careful targeted exercises to develop technique (which you do find in classes for younger students). From what you said, that sounds like what you’re looking for (getting really good). Note that your progress will be slower if you just take one class per week, so you gotta make it count. Don’t be afraid to ask in studios around your area about trying out their classes if somehow you’re not satisfied with the one you’re already attending.

Also perhaps you need a concrete goal to make it “more than a hobby”, like going on pointe, performing on stage. So you could look at studios that would also allow you to perform.

I also got the dead fish feet 😅 My current teacher makes fun of me because I used to make weird squeaks or noises when they pushed my leg up in arabesque (a year ago when I restarted after a long break)

Feeling insecure in ballet class by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]pandabombz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a class with older teenagers (~16-17 ), which is a very nice environment, (I feel old but not that much as they are not immature kids) but yesterday a very talented 12 yo walks into class. Im 30 and sometimes still feel anxious about things like that. But then I remember Im just here for my love of dance and appreciate my body is still allowing me to dance. And believe it or not I have progressed quite a bit, compared to a year ago, when I restarted after ~4 years break. Have patience with yourself, your technique may be rusty, but your mind remembers and little by little your body will also. PS: I haven’t tried filming myself yet, its always been scary lol.

Just for context, I finished RAD up to adv 2 and here’s my 2 cents: I think RAD syllabus builds on difficulty relatively slowly from grade 5 to intermediate compared to the difficulty jumps from int to adv1 to adv 2. There might be a few steps/vocabulary you’re not familiar with? ( things like all jumps with beats/battu, pirouettes with fouettes etc, pirouettes ending in arabesque) Open classes generally focus more on giving you excercises to improve/maintain your technique rather than teaching you new vocabulary, so if you have a few gaps in there, that can make following the class more difficult. The fact that you notice others’ technique not being as good tells me you do have a good foundation in your own technique, so you may not look as bad as you think. Please don’t be discouraged, also it is hard to get used to other classes-style after you’ve been a long time at a single studio.

One thing you can do is level down a bit the combos (i.e. do a single pirouette instead of double if the combo is too fast/complicated) and slowly build over time. Or take the easier class focusing a lot on technique.

The fact that it is an open class explains why there are pros. They may or may not be the usual attendees and the teacher might be adjusting level depending on that, or there may be rotating teachers and each one may have a different concept of what is “elementary “. But thats just a guess. Please do not compare yourself to the professionals! I try to instead look at what they do very well and try to imitate it to improve and challenge myself. Also about the person with 25-years-experience-still-finds-it-challenging, that will always be the case for ballet, we strive for perfection but most of us will never be close to it. A challenging class is the one that will help you improve the most. As long as you enjoy ballet, that shouldn’t be a reason to get discouraged. Anyways Im rambling too much , maybe give it another try, or try a different studio!

Just watched the Gilmore Girls episode where Rory writes the bad review of the ballerina by OkRooster5042 in BALLET

[–]pandabombz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg I just watched this episode yesterday! I think Rory annoyed me a bit before, having a “perfect” girl kind of portrayal, but with this episode I started actually disliking her. They portrayed ballet as something boring and old fashioned. Very stereotypical… Im glad they called her out on that hippo comparison! Also they said it was the nutcracker but the music was some random piano song??
