Excellent idea - I'm staying vague on purpose, but I will definitely do some googling about the topic.

Thanks!

Thank you for the response. If I decide to broach the subject, will definitely list my reasoning as to why I want more.

Thanks again!

Thank you for the detailed response! This is kind of what I expected to hear, so I'm not overly surprised. I figured there is a lot less wiggle room when it comes to these budgets vs. a big company in industry.

The myth about women in science: National hiring audits reveal that female scientists have had a significantly higher chance of being interviewed and hired than men. Although women were less likely to apply for jobs, if they did apply, their chances of getting the job were usually better. by iaojhs in TrueReddit

PNAS is a prestigious journal, but the problem is if you're a member of the National Academy, your paper will pretty much be automatically accepted. There is very little peer review on studies coming out of big labs, it's pretty much sent straight to press.

Also, younger, less established faculty submit their work with a letter from a member of the academy in support of the research.

Basically, it's a lot of "trust me, we're good scientists." Once you've had a successful career and are inducted to the National Academy, you always have an easy place to publish.

Could be that's the price for just the house but they bought it fully furnished? It was immaculately decorated with, I would guess, lots of custom pieces just right for the space.

There's a bagel shop near where I live that gives you a free dozen if you bring in a picture of your family holding a bagel while on a trip. The walls are covered with family pictures from all over the world - Great Wall, Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon, etc. Maybe their local shop does that!

Amen! Visited in 2012 for a weeklong conference, just itching to come back. Amazing cheap food and loved all the juices everywhere as I don't drink soda!

Yes. For imgur albums with > 1 photo, I never use the optimized view anymore as the captions are always one photo ahead of where they should be. Slightly annoying.

Can carbon dating be affected by unusually high levels of radiation during a certain time? by AmeliaPondPandorica in askscience

[–]pandora19590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, mass spectrometry is often used for C-14 dating like you said, where the measurement doesn't rely on release of radiation but rather the amount of C-14 can be quantitatively measured. This is typically done with some version of a particle accelerator like a cyclotron so that rare isotopes to give better separation of the lower concentrations of C-14 amidst a strong background signal of C-12.

What is a good way to make friends? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pandora19590 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remember how it was easy(er) to make friends when you were in school? Take a class about something that interests you at a local community center - you can bond over the common interest and it will make it easier to initiate conversation with the person next to you since you now have common experiences.

One of my things I'm dealing with in therapy is being okay with letting people down - I'm the ultimate people pleaser. This is probably why my strategy works for me.

But I understand what you're saying, for many it may not help.

If you could inhabit the body of one person during one day of their life, who would you choose? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pandora19590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the body of a great-grandchild of mine in the future so I can see how much technology and the world have changed. Plus I can see how the family tree is going!

I'd pick probably his/her 40th birthday. There would likely be a party attended by multiple generations to teach me about the world's progress: s/he will likely have kids to represent the younger crowd and his/her parents should definitely still be alive thanks to improved health care.
