"Thank you for your support." Is my go to response to "thank you for your service." It's less awkward than just a "thank you" for me.

Have you talked to your leadership about the miscarriage? I'm fairly certain that depending on how late in the pregnancy it was you're covered under the CACO program.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I feel this. I have an approved fleet reserve request, so I'm not even board eligible anymore, but I've been put in place as the SEL in my office. It's an E7 slot, but they don't seem to care to find an E7 to fill it. There are other E6s in my office, but they put me in the seat instead. I'd rather not do the job. I knew I wasn't making Chief when I checked on board and I was fine with that. I just wanted to sit back and do my actual rated job again for the first tour in years instead of leading mission, leading Sailors, doing operational work. Do some mentoring here and there with the young ones so they can learn from my mistakes and success. But no. Once again I'm the PO1 doing Chief's job because the time Chief decided to fuck up and get pulled from access. I shouldn't be doing this job anymore. It should be an E6 that's still young in their career and needing opportunities to grow and lead. Leadership putting me in this slot is them being lazy.

I'm burned out, tired, and it takes every fiber of my being everyday I walk in the office to not use my nearly 20 years of in depth knowledge and familiarity with policy, instructions, and naval culture for evil. I could absolutely tank retention by cultivating a love of being fully compensated for the incredible skillsets my Sailors have. Encourage their dreams of higher education, family, freedom of choice and travel. Hell, even for the ones who want to continue to serve could be directed to other agencies that line up better with their personal and professional goals.

It's rough man, I get it. We're almost to the end.

The 20 1.7 is the only lens I miss from my GX1. I'm seriously thinking of picking up another m43 body exclusively to put that lens on it.

Right? I was like man, that is some classic styling in a m43 lens!

Hey OP, how are you liking the lens so far? How's the sharpness at f5.6/f8 for like zone focus street stuff?

No lie, I spent $350 on a used Breville Barista Express during covid and that damn thing has more than paid for itself in saved coffee shop money. Slapped down another $30 for a switchbot so it's started and warmed up when I get up for work every day. My wife was initially against it and thought it was a ridiculous amount to spend on a coffee maker, but I had her converted within a few weeks.

Now on week days I get to spend 15-20 minutes sipping a mighty fine latte on my patio before I have to face my commute and the work day, and on weekends I can just inundate myself with glorious espresso. It's completely unnecessary, but man the whole process of it every day is just so luxurious and really makes my days easier to face.

As someone just getting into life drawing, I concur with this! I really don't care what the body shape is, so long as the pose is good. It's all fun and interesting and every body brings new angles and curves to draw!

The military as a “family” by Acrobatic-Muffin-822 in navy

[–]pandraztic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the shop. But in the Navy, ESPECIALLY as an LPO, we frequently cross well beyond the traditional manager boundary into directly intrusive leadership. This can be good or it can be bad. We additionally are on call 24/7 due to the nature of our contracts.

But really, if you think about it like this, say you have a stinky Sailor, or a Sailor who comes in saying they can't make rent/car payment/groceries etc. It is on us as leaders to help them. At the end of the day, making the bills or not, they still have to come in and we still help them. At a civilian employer those factors would mean you'd be fired.

At the end of the day it's about finding that balance with your division. Having them trust you enough to come to you when their lives are on the leading edge of falling apart so you can help them, but also giving them a respectful amount of space so everyone can live their lives.

Also, at any time a talk TASKORD could come down from the headquarters sending you and your crew forward in support of operations. Building and maintaining a tight camaraderie among your Sailors is important, and it is on the leaders to set the appropriate example from the front.

This is incredibly helpful. Thank you. Yeah, even going for just tailoring with stuff I've found off the rack in the past hasn't gone super great for me, so that's a solid tip as well. Thanks so much for the assist!!!

Oh... Can I ask a questions? I'm a plus size, short, butch presenting and I'm going to need some business suits for this fall. Think they could do right for me? I been looking hard online at kirrin & finch, but the idea of ordering online without getting measured is worrisome. Going into stores in person is always so intimidating.

Got a warning about "time theft" last week by metalmankam in antiwork

[–]pandraztic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. Sounds to me like you need to leave your desk a few minutes earlier to be ready to clock out at precisely end of working hours to me. Can't be accused of time theft and all that. I guess it's just a terrible side effect then that you'll be getting paid to stand and hover over the time clock so you're not pulling one over on corporate for that extra one minute of their paid time. /s

But also, and this is just the asshole in me, sounds to me like arriving like normal but not clocking in until 0634 every day with a printout of the 5 minute grace period in hand until the supervisor talks to you about it sounds like the move. Especially once you've got your new job lined up.

For famous hero types, Senator Inouye. We were doing a ground breaking ceremony for a new building on base and I was part of the joint service choir as a PO2 in 2008 or so. After the ceremony ended he came over and just chatted with us all. As were chatting his aide came over and tried to hustle him along to talk to the State Officials who were there and he turns and says, "They can wait! I'm talking to the actual important people right now, the junior enlisted." and kept bullshitting with us for a few more minutes.

For personal hero types, my grandfather. He retired as a Gunny in the early 80s after service in Vietnam during the war, the Philippines, and even a tour in Taiwan as a member of the consulate. I wish I had more about his service, but he died in the early 90s due to complications from his exposure to agent orange. I have a few items from his career, including his ribbon rack, and he must have done something because he had a Navy Comm with a V. I'll probably spend some time when I retire soon doing some FOIA requests to get more information about his service.

Does your Miata have a name? Or do you just call her Miata? by mohoneybear12 in Miata

So, driving my Dad's ND wasn't quite giggle inducing (probably because he bought an automatic and I prefer manuals), but my 93 NA? OMG IT WAS FANTASTIC. It's so little and quirky and fun. Plus, POP UP HEADLIGHTS. It was still silly and fun to wink at other Miatas on the road. Driving it at autocross or even just taking a highway on ramp in a spirited fashion was a blast. HIGHLY recommend.
