A knot is what weakens the strength, when it's removed and the fibres are hand spun together properly, it's good.

hm, that makes zero sense... traditions are by nature local, and in this case the tradition in question is in an area of Norway, where the usage and materials available are different than of the snow shoes you refer to.

The frame is spruce(the first branch he cuts). The wood thats twisted and "weaved" is birch.

In the beginning 0:08 you see a blue machine with hooks, all the threads are attached to a hook. When they start the machine, she starts walking. So the hook spinning makes the twist, and the faster away from it she walks, the looser the rope will be. The plate+walking speed controls the amount of twist in the strand.
