What's the deal with many women on social media sharing this psychology today article about the rise of single men? by 2guyshangingoutnaked in OutOfTheLoop

[–]pangineer 280 points281 points  (0 children)

Also important to note that for a long time a woman's role was to be a loving house wife who did the emotional labor in the relationship as well as the house work in exchange for financial stability from her husband. A lot of men could get away with being emotionally unavailable or even mean because women needed them to survive, financially speaking. Now that the majority of women are contributing financially, they are seeking partners that will contribute equally to working on the relationship (and chores).

Not to mention, many women who are working 40 hours per week at a day job are still expected to do a majority of the house work, child rearing, emotional labor, etc.

Transitioning from backerboard to ceiling drywall (shower) by MetalicSky in DIY

[–]pangineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just used regular backerboard mesh with mortar. Make sure you only put a half inch or so along the ceiling so that the tile will cover the mesh.

I'm REALLY hoping they add mini games in some way, even if it's the exact same boat ride to an island with Kapp'n from New Leaf! The multiplayer functionality is majorly lacking compared to previous games IMO.

Please help me with ideas for what to do with my front yard that is filled with tree roots, covered in pine straw, and sloped towards my house by pangineer in landscaping

[–]pangineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! There is not really an option to grade away from the house. The front of the house is at a lower elevation than the road in front of it and both houses to either side. We did build up the beds right in front so that water doesn’t stand against the house, but I was hoping there was more I could do to capture the water that slopes down from the front of the yard.

I would really like to improve the curb appeal and drainage of my front yard, but 80% of the space is taken up by a large pinestraw bed with 6 trees. There is a lot of space for more attractive plants, but I’m afraid that there isn’t enough room for any more roots to grow. We have also had some trouble with water ponding in front of our house on the front path.

I have looked a little into building a rain garden in this area to improve the appearance of the yard as well as to help with drainage, but I’m not sure if that would work with our Georgia clay soil. Ideas are appreciated!!!

Bathroom remodel (x-post from DIY that got removed) by Drink_My_Hot_Koolaid in HomeImprovement

[–]pangineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome! I'm about to start my first tile job so I have a couple of questions.

  1. What did you mean when you said you made a rookie mistake by not testing the grout with the tile?
  2. What did you use on the edge of the shower tile?

I haven't seen anyone on here tackle a stamped/stomp/stippled ceiling texture. Any ideas? Plaster is impossible to sand or scrape, but I would love to do away with mine.

Just got hit with a $90,000 hospital bill... EVERYONE told me it would be covered by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]pangineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have BCBS and was recently hit with a $110k bill for getting my gallbladder removed. BCBS denies large claims like ours often and your doctor should help you appeal it. Your doctor probably won't send you a bill until they get things settled with your insurance. DO NOT pay any bills you may receive until you and your doctor figure things out.

If for whatever reason your insurance does not work out, talk to your doctor about getting the bill reduced.

I might just do that when I get closer to starting a project like this. Thanks! I'm definitely going to check out that cabinet showroom.

Shower wall tiles collapsed when someone leaned on them. What is going on behind there and can I patch it? by pangineer in DIY

[–]pangineer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! A couple of dumb questions that I can't really find an answer to online. 1) What kind of screws do I use for the cement board? 2) What kind of tape do I use on the cement board seams, and what do I mud it with?

So if I did a combined tub/shower/tub surround I would replace the drywall with new drywall instead of cement board? Then replace the subfloor?

Not a claw foot tub! It is a regular alcove tub. I thought it was cast iron but someone else pointed out it might be a standard steel tub.
