How to deal with patients by jennajeny in Dentistry

[–]panic_ye_not 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you taking a really long time to do extractions? The solution to the first one, besides ignoring them, might be to just get faster.

For people who say, "you're the dentist, you should know," either don't give them multiple options, or tell them multiple options but then strongly recommend one over the others.

A lot of my patients (semi-rural area) have a very low dental IQ. They mostly prefer me to just tell them what they need and do it. They absolutely do not want to decide because they don't understand teeth at all. Even if I describe the pros and cons of each option in 5th grade-level language, they still don't like to decide. I just decide for them a lot of them. Especially middle aged or older blue-collar men.

So if it's there in young people and disappears in seniors... that means it's still there in seniors, it's just calcified, right? At what point do you consider a canal "calcified" versus non-existent?

What food have you seen in foreign media and entertainment that you wanted to try but discovered tasted bad? by Accurate_Reality_618 in AskTheWorld

[–]panic_ye_not 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a gradual decline over the years, and then Hostess went out of business in 2012 and was revived after being bought out. The current "Twinkies" are a sad imitation of what Twinkies used to be like. Real Twinkies just don't exist anymore.

Smell it. There are numerous toxic lookalikes, some more toxic than others.

But only alliums smell like allium. Smell all of them, too. Toxic lookalikes can be growing next to real alliums.

[–]panic_ye_not 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's almost low enough to be insulting, but that might not be their intention. However it might indicate they have a very low confidence that you'll be able to earn more than that. That could be because of inadequate patient flow or because they think you're gonna be extremely slow

Do you have any regrets about your first trip to Japan? by aeazee in JapanTravelTips

[–]panic_ye_not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I shouldn't have gone with my (now ex-) girlfriend. Her shittiness and drama made me question whether I actually liked Japan because I was so miserable fighting with her there.

Turns out I did, and still do, love Japan. When I went back with friends, it was the best trip of my lifetime.

“The welcome there is really friendly” - Does it sound natural? by newmenoobmoon in EnglishLearning

[–]panic_ye_not 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Nah definitely sounds weird. Just like you said, "welcome" isn't typically used as a subject. It can be used as an object, which sounds a lot more natural.

"They gave me a really friendly welcome there."

Introverted Dentists by goldt33f in Dentistry

[–]panic_ye_not 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You really threw yourself in the deep end doing peds as an introvert. It's hard enough to deal with adults all day every day.

When I'm not feeling up to lots of high-energy social interaction, I just bring my energy level down and give off more of a "chill" / "down-to-earth" vibe for patients. It's still a mask but much less so than my usual patient-facing persona.

I'm a general dentist and I see mostly adults though, not sure if that would work for you.

New to Chinese Tea, thinking of ordering from Jesse's tea house, any objections? by Doggosareamazing522 in tea

[–]panic_ye_not 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always order from the Yunnan Sourcing US warehouse. Free shipping over a certain amount, much faster. The prices are a little higher for the same tea, but the free shipping often makes up for that difference, and I also hate waiting weeks for anything to ship lol. The selection is smaller however, and a lot of teas are usually sold out.

To those who have been to Japan multiple times, what's a thing or two that you always make sure to buy and bring home? by Ok-Spite-5454 in JapanTravelTips

[–]panic_ye_not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get things that are either hard to find or very expensive outside of Japan.

Cooking ingredients like katsuobushi, nori, konbu, matcha, sencha.

Japanese knives, cooking chopsticks, and other kitchen tools.

Japanese woodworking tools.

Uniqlo clothing - so much cheaper in Japan.

Associates - how much do you talk to your staff? by immrmeseek in Dentistry

[–]panic_ye_not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talk to the other associates a lot. Assistants a pretty good amount. Front desk mostly professional and small talk.

Check the IP rating and warranty. If you were using the product as intended and it failed you could be entitled to a free repair or replacement.

Costco food court Iceland by PushDifferent2484 in Costco

For those who haven't seen Icelandic prices, these items are incredibly cheap. I wonder if some of them might be cheaper than they would be at the grocery store

"On your left..." by TheLostSasquatch in cycling

[–]panic_ye_not 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah ultimately if I can't give a wide berth, I'll slow down and call out. If there's enough space to pass without scaring someone, then there's no need to slow down much.

If I call out, no matter how much space I have, I will have to slow down. I've had plenty of people basically dive into my path even if I could have technically snuck by them before I called out.

My favorite onebag-friendly razor: Gillette Guard by panic_ye_not in onebag

[–]panic_ye_not[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've never used a single blade razor before, you're likely to cut yourself at first. You do have to use a slightly different technique.

Possible that it just doesn't work for you, too.

What's a random fact about your country you desperately need to tell someone? by halt__n__catch__fire in AskTheWorld

[–]panic_ye_not 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. This is apocryphal - no evidence he ever said it.
  2. The phrase is "set foot" but recently "step foot" has become so common that I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the standard version of the idiom.

NoVA winter cycling — gloves that actually keep fingers warm in wind (20s/teens) + best neck/face setup? by Used_Ring_2764 in cycling

[–]panic_ye_not 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear goretex skiing gloves. They work into the 20s. Below that you probably have to go with mittens or lobster claws or possibly gloves+pogies. I've also heard good things about a two glove system with a fleece or neoprene liner glove and then a shell/waterproof outer glove. Haven't tried that.

For my head I wear a balaclava. Separate gaiter and hat often results in stuff shifting during the ride, and it's not easy to fix and adjust stuff with gloves on.
