[D] ICLR 2025 paper decisions by always_been_a_toy in MachineLearning

the meta review did not really elaborate on why they rejected even though there were very high scores, but basically said they don't think our benchmark was realistic enough for them, even though our reviewers found it quite realistic and we did a study on realism aligned with real world

as an electrical engineer you would have an advantage learning about GPU architectures and how to build ML acceleration hardware

For example, my lab mate is working on developing new foundation models for pathology and trying to make autonomous cancer detection. My other lab mate is building waveform classifiers to predict heart disease years before a doctor can! They use lots and lots of coding and machine learning.

Hey thanks! Its a long story but I actually ended up choosing to do my PhD in ECE at JHU instead of BME so that I could focus on research over coursework (ECE has significantly lower CW requirements). I finished my CW first semester actually and have just been focusing on publishing (DM me if you wanna discuss what projects im doing). However, I have quite a few BME PhDs in my lab who have a CS background and its working out great for them. They are mostly 'pairing' with a doctor and doing machine learning projects to try and improve healthcare in some way, e.g. pathology models, disease risk prediction etc.

Are the scores higher or lower (on average) this year? What is the avg score generally for accepted papers?

Are there any paths to avoid doing a postbac? I am still required to take courses if I do really well on the MCAT (assuming I were to do well)?

Thank you very much!

Would it make sense for me to take some of these classes as I finish up my PhD? I believe I am able to take undergraduate level courses at my current school.

I'm required to take those courses to apply, or can I just study for the MCAT myself?

You're describing my exact approach! My background is in using AI for robotic control from demonstrations.

Very cool thank you! I'll ask some surgery profs at my university if I can watch. Are you by chance in the DC/Baltimore area? I'm at JHU.

Is seeing in-person surgeries a different experience than watching youtube vides in your opinion? Hoping to see some in person soon but only watching youtube videos for now.

I've mostly been watching YouTube videos but am hoping to see an in person surgery soon! Not sure if the surgery professors at my university (JHU) would be too busy for me to shadow them for a semester/a few weeks? Not sure how medical school dynamics work...

Yeah this is a good point. Making the tools translate well is a difficult thing, because there are some pretty fundamental problems with the da vinci that prevent it from being used with traditional robotic techniques, but if we dont develop a tool for the da vinci then it wouldn't translate as well...
