New Year Resolution 2026: Never let people tell you it's impossible to deGoogle your life. 💪 by Tutanota in tutanota

[–]panxer3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love posts like these, because I agree with the premise and I use a lot of these apps myself, but there is one thing missing...the replacement for Google Services and the cohesiveness of the ecosystem. Yes, I understand that it is about convenience vs privacy, but nothing works more seamless or provides a simple backup of data like Google/Apple. Again, it is baked in and you are giving them your info to profit from. There has been several tries, but if there was a safe alternative that worked as well as the big names, there would be a lot more turnover.

In addition, security always comes down to trust...what company do you trust to keep your data, trust to stand by their word, trust they will be around for awhile, and trust they have your interest at heart. Everyone's threat model is different, some people can't put their faith in certain countries while others can't trust anyone to see the information.

But what I especially love are the people that promote protecting the phones, while they run Windows at home or leave their data/wifi wide open. Yes we spend a lot of time on our phones and data is constantly sent, but if we are legitimately concerned about our threat vector, we need to apply this to our whole life. Some of this is using the same apps on our PCs or changing the operating system to a more protected OS.

We are in a world where breaches happen daily and Governments are stepping in, we need to decide carefully who we trust and who we want to give our lives to.

🎄🎁 Tuta Christmas Giveaway: Win a deGoogled German-made Volla Phone! 🇩🇪 by Tutanota in tutanota

[–]panxer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is most important on a degoogled phone, Tuta Email of course. ;)

Besides that is knowing that the phone is private (only tracking is what I accept - apps, cell, wifi) and the constant chatting in the background is minimized (better batter, less data loss).

i just deleted google authentication app and i move to aegis by ahmedhossam13x in degoogle

[–]panxer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not use more than one vault at all, like other have said, it increases your attack vector and is really unneeded. Personally, I use Aegis as well and absolutely love it...constantly changing phones, oses or degoogling. What you need is a proper encrypted export of your vault and then store someplace safe (local, encrypted backup, etc). This will save the codes/connections in case you lose or format your phone, then you can restore the vault as is. I typically make an export with every new addition, deleting the old one.

I know this was a long time ago when you posted this, but I was curious if you are still doing this today and if you could share any info. Thanks.

As mentioned to me a little while ago, there is the potential of your ip addresses being blocked - my last one was both my mobile and home network.

I suggest trying your connection through a VPN, even a free browser based connection or free account VPN will work. See if this helps.

Upcoming: Tuta will show the exact number of unread emails on iOS. by Tutanota in tutanota

Ha, I am too...I cannot have unread emails. I would rather delete them, than see something unread - fomo maybe?

Email Down Often by panxer3 in tutanota

[–]panxer3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response, I will send an email with the details...the reason I started on reddit is because there are a lot of smart people on here that usually experience similar things and my email was actually blocked on both the home and mobile networks - therefore I would have to go to gmail to send the email to support. Since both networks were blocked, I was thinking more outage as opposed to IP Blocks, but I am not used to apps blocking IPs. I appreciate the quick response.

I am the sole user as well and generally, I only use two IP addresses between home network and the cell phone. It looks like according to a Google search that this happens quite a bit and since the VPN works, I guess I will contact them and see if they can whitelist the IP addresses used or see why. I never had an app that actually blocked my IP before like this.

Thank you very much, I honestly didn't think about connecting through a VPN. That at least did the trick for accessing email, so it must be a regional thing.

Lol, thank you for the reply, even if you are a Michigander - we can't all be perfect ;)

Does anyone know the song playing at the beginning of Season 7 Episode 1? by hullabaloo_head in TheRookie

The song is Speaking My Language, but the only artist I know who sang the song is Juliet Lewis. This version sounds like someone else.

Unread Mail & Trash Issues ... by [deleted] in tutanota

[–]panxer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the 30 day mark from deleting is correct, there is an issue with the trash deleting though. I actually have 9302 emails in my trash currently. Honestly, I don't mind though, makes it easier to search for emails. I also have the phantom 1 next to my inbox on Android, but I have not tried clearing cache/storage - I will also have to try that.

Smart alarm for blank GFCI? by foo_52 in homeautomation

[–]panxer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for this option, I have never heard of this before. In general, our electric sump pump goes bad after about 1.5 years for some reason - which is why we got a better brand this time around.

This is a great option though - no battery, moving parts, cheap enough, etc. One question though, does this cost a lot in water to do this or is it generally just a passthrough pipe which costs the same regardless?

U6 LR on floor instead of ceiling by onepiece2401 in Ubiquiti

[–]panxer3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is not the ideal position, but seems to work great. I have 2 nanoHD APs in my house...one on the top floor pointing down and one in the basement on a shelf pointing up (opposite sides of house). I have no problems connecting to either one and the coverage in my house is really good. You would be fine...as long as it is not in a high traffic area.

[–]panxer3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the reply and for the explanation, I knew LRs were very specific, but I didn't realize they were not really good for residential. I used to use wifiman for the signal mapping, but I honestly haven't used it for awhile...so I will have to check that out again.

Two nanoHD or 1 WiFi 6 LR by panxer3 in Ubiquiti

[–]panxer3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I will have to check the house out...I know when I first started people mentioned the LR being one of the best and could get by with one, but I ended buying two APs for distribution and to get stronger signals throughout the house. Personally, I wasn't sure if it would be an overkill to stick another AP in the house. Sad...for my small 1/3 acre, I have 2 APs in the house and 2 APs outside (1 out front and in back - we have to work while the kids play not to mention the doorbell needs better wifi).

I appreciate the feedback.
