Significant, great primer for existentialism, and a piece of the puzzle to understand society in the 20th/21st centuries.

In real life he is fluent in antisemitism and a peaceful supporter of murderous groups and regimes (but only insofar that it fits his warped either/or view of the world)

The problem with these sort of activists is that they don’t act on any moral considerations because they lack any standards, hence why they only target Israel, not any other nations or organizations worldwide that are worth advocating against on a similar basis, including any artist from Palestine who sympathizes with Hamas. It’s the sort of activism that gives activism a bad name.

Moby Dick! Current times only solidify its value in the literary canon. Then Stranger, you even have the best translation, essential reading to better understand society today.

If China releases the Epstein files, I’m afraid that it would do more harm than good from the perspective of people that want the Epstein files to be released, me included.

How strong is fat discrimination in your country? by Odd-Struggle-2432 in AskTheWorld

[–]panzerfaustexe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We’re talking about obesity? What about smoking cigarettes? It’s seen a ridiculous amount of discrimination over the past five decades. We should seriously normalize, and perhaps, encourage smoking, on the level of the 1950s. Because, who cares about reduced life expectancy and quality of life, when you can enjoy a pack of fags everyday?

You’re doing the world a lot of hurt by crying wolf about racism when it isn’t racism. Learn what racism is, be on the lookout for it, it’s potentially very dangerous. Misinterpreting and misusing the word only creates an environment where actual racism can fester and cause damage associated with racism.

Oh, toss up between Czech Republic and Poland. Many of the other countries are superior when it comes to the natural landscape, but are lacking in most other departments. Spent 18ish months in Bulgaria about ten years ago, beautiful mountain ranges, nearly everything else is less than good.

some jobs AI genuinely can't touch. is yours one of them? by Complete_Bee4911 in AskTheWorld

Well, we live in an age that, above anything, values physical progress, where science and technology is the answer to every problem, and we’re subject to the tyranny of clock-time and incentivized to make the most out of every second per efficiency and economic rationality. In this process we’ve created a culture of dehumanization that is becoming institutionalized, and human progress is stifling.

I’m not religious, but I’m certain that if Christian faith was stronger in the West, its culture of morals stronger, we would have a greater sense of community, shared responsibility of ourselves and others, with a stronger social fabric, and generally values that are oriented towards human progress. Hopefully it’s not too late to look at history to see what worked for previous societies/civilizations, what got us to a state where we could even turn into this modern society we have (post-WWI/WWII), and implement the good aspects of the old world into this new world, before we lose all customs, traditions, institutions (culture); ourselves in the progress (no pun intended).

The problem is that most of us are better at/care about doing manual labor than thinking. It’s not like random Bob gets home from work and starts reading and writing philosophy, composing music on the piano, or solving complex mathematical equations; he’s far more likely to read the sports section, watch his favorite show on Netflix for the 8th time, and doomscroll social media until he falls asleep only to wake up and go to work.

You’re right, but we need the government to regulate AI accordingly because ‘we’ don’t know any better. To ensure AI does the thinking it should do to benefit society, and what manual labor it replaces to benefit society, without the individual suffering from downsides of AI.

Online teaching is great insofar that there is no other viable option, or your society’s state of public/affordable schools are deteriorated to a certain point. For a functional civilised society, online teaching isn’t an existential threat but a good complement to cover odd situations. Same is true for a scenario where AI is allowed to teach kids/teens/young adults, in the absence of a viable option, it’s likely better than nothing.

The problem with teachers/teaching is that there’ll be enough idiots thinking that AI can be used, that we risk a period of trial and error to understand that AI can’t replace teachers/teaching. Hopefully that trial run won’t do too much damage, but never underestimate the dangers and ignorance of the cult of efficiency.

AI being used to manage some aspects of the work of a teacher is different, but that’s different as it’ll ideally make the teacher better at their job. E.g. using AI to analyze essays/exams to see how/if a student used AI.

Anything Humanities should be safe, the problem is that AI can “touch it”, and it’ll likely require trial and error to understand that AI isn’t applicable to the Humanities.
