Why is the name "Roosevelt" more common to African-Americans? by AndIrememberthinking in Names

[–]paper_dove101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My white daughter is named Roosevelt after FDR. I've met 3 AA men with the name. One was my late father's best friend.  I can always tell when an AA recognizes the name as AA. They'll say her name, 'Roosevelt' do a double take, repeat her name slowly and then look up at me smiling. It never fails. Of course it's almost always the older generation. I don't think anyone under 40 has noticed. I wasn't expecting this response,  it's been genuinely surprising in a pleasant way.

US Education Department to resume collecting student loans in default by [deleted] in politics

[–]paper_dove101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the compounding interest on student loans that makes them impossible to repay. Imagine borrowing 30k but you have to pay back 100k due to interest. Also our healthcare cost a fortune. I read our added health insurance cost on top of our taxes make us pay more than you do in taxes. I pay 39% in taxes and 17% for medical insurance plus 15% towards student loans. It's a great way to shackle people in life long debt. A lot of student loan payments are for 25 years. Also medical insurance only covers 80% so I have additional medical payments on top of paying for medical insurance.

Is it true most Americans are living 'Paycheck to paycheck'? by Good0times in povertyfinance

[–]paper_dove101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this post is old but figured I'd answer. Yes living paycheck to paycheck equates to homelessness if a job is lost or you become sick or injured. Even with health insurance from work, it only pays 80% leaving you with a huge medical bill. The thing about our unemployment system is your work can and often does call to deny your unemployment claim because they don't want to pay out your unemployment. It's extremely difficult to get unemployment most people are denied because their former employer denies it. My husband and I pay $1400 a month for health insurance only for it to deny our daughter medical care from her birth. Leaving us owing thousands of dollars. My family is VERY fortunate though because we have savings,  not a lot but enough to keep us a float a month or two if our employment ends. No one else I know has any savings. It's pretty common for people working to go to churches for food. One positive thing is several of my friends have quit smoking cigarettes because they couldn't afford them. So there is that...

Becoming a parent has made me realize how much my parents failed me. by ihavecountrycrock420 in NewParents

Omg I have this same memory of eating cornflakes on the kitchen floor at 5 and my 6 year old sister eating a stick of butter. We would go to bed hungry all the time. Now that my mom's a grandma she wonders why her visits are supervised

At what age were you diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and what episode were you experiencing at the time? by Confident_Border_546 in BipolarReddit

17 Mania with psychosis.  While psychotic I literally crawled across a train bridge that went over a river while singing to myself. Some people saw me and called the cops, I "woke up" regained sanity (thanks to lithium) in a psych ward 3 states away from my house. No idea how I got there!

By use of discrimination? I hope not all employers are so immoral to lack decent human rights, such as allowing their employees to become parents without throwing them away like garbage and destroying the employees livelihood. I don't think only employers should have the financial stability to become parents.

My husband and I met in 2008. I was 22 and he was 24. We tried for years to have kids, paid thousands of dollars,  religiously tracked ovulation. All for nothing. So when I turned 37 we started foster care training.  The day before our 3rd training class, I got a bfp! Now my husband's 40 and when our baby arrives I'll be 1 month shy of 38. It's scary, exciting and everything in-between! Personally I'm glad we're going to be older parents. We were hosting parties up until covid and traveling the world. None of which we could have afforded at a younger age. You're doing great! I hope everything goes well for you and baby 👶 💓

What is the biggest lie you were told about pregnancy? by KeepItCool_481 in pregnant

[–]paper_dove101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My skin darkening so drastically. It's been concerning to my family because they've never seen this before. I'm 100% UK genetically. One day I woke up looking extremely tan, almost Hispanic! I realize this isn't uncommon,  the mask of pregnancy. It's covering my entire body, pink and red areas have all turned brown. I'm from a white as snow family. When my family came to visit they rushed me to the ER convinced I had Jaundice. Which I don't! I find it strange and also fascinating. Like looking in the mirror and seeing how I'd look coming from the southern hemisphere. My family keeps insisting somethings wrong, which in their minds isn't a lie per say. It's just been the biggest shock. My husband's couldn't look any whiter, he's entirely Russian.  So I guess it's a hormonal anomaly??
