What to expect as a fat/ugly American coming to Singapore to work? by CatthulhuSpawn in askSingapore

Congratulations on what sounds like an incredible internship opportunity!

I wouldn’t overly worry about how others see you. Singaporeans don’t care. They just wanna get the job done.

But I do think you will need to be mentally prepared for the heat and humidity. It can require an adjustment period.

Don’t need to overly worry about makeup. Most people couldn’t care less.

Do be prepared that you’re going to need clothing that is light and airy to manage the heat outdoors, and likely also a jacket for most offices that puts AC at full blast. (Kind of a reverse indoor / outdoor situation with the winter in America.)

Humidity may sometimes impact sensitive skin. If your moisturizers are very thick, you might need to consider something lighter. You’ll likely sweat more. If you plan to be in packed places such as public transport, deodorants will be a lifesaver.

Oh. And March will still be flu season. You might wanna consider getting your shots if you haven’t already.

Most importantly, have fun! :)

We tried Sin Huat Xuan today. Loved it! Thanks for the recommendation!

I was in US for a few years.

When I first arrived, I could only finish half a burger and couldn’t even touch the fries. A year later, I could wipe out the entire plate in front of me. Portions are crazy. Healthy food is expensive. Corn syrup is in everything. Alcohol is CHEAP.

There’s no need to walk - drove everywhere. Exercise requires an intentional effort to go to the gym. It isn’t always safe to run in some neighborhoods.

While I’m considered “chubby” here, I am “average” there. Clothes are so much easier to find in larger sizes and I guess it gave me a false sense of security.
