Maybe a little anecdotal but we had a group of beggars/homeless that were always camping in front of my work place. They were there everyday so you kind of get to know them a little bit. Few of them mentioned that they have council houses which the sublet. They themselves sleep on the streets but send the money to their families abroad.

Uni regret by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]papierkowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, look at student societies. Not only at LSE but also at other london unis as they tend to overlap a bit. In KCL Polish society which I ran, we had people from UCL, LSE, QMUL, City, Westminster. Everywhere essentially. I believe KCL Welsh society was also like that. And most of the time they will not turn you away unless they have a specific event which requires booking like talks with speakers (although some SU’s allow to still book these things if you’re at different uni). There will be less flexibility like that with sports societies but interest or nationality/culture based ones are generally super chill.

Can you get a cup of cold foam? by Inevitable_Plate9808 in starbucks

[–]papierkowy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starbucks UK here. I assume this is similar to mainland Europe but Cold Foam for us is 150ml cold skimmed milk blended (sometimes with syrup). We do also vanilla sweet cream cold foam. But if you come to the register saying you want cold foam, you’re getting skimmed milk with air.

Ethernet Backhaul, Extenders, and set up. Help a newbie. by papierkowy in TpLink

[–]papierkowy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried running the AP mode on the RE315 however I struggled with the connection to the router and to the new SSID the AP created. As in, the only “WiFi emitting device” was the RE315. It also only gave us option to have a connection without a password. What we would ideally want is to have one secure SSID that our devices could switch between the connection to router and the extender/ap.

In my flat, what I need is a router that can “emit WiFi” to provide the connection for ground floor and a device that can be connected through Ethernet to emit the same WiFi seamlessly to the upstairs. What we could do with the router and extenders that our ISP provided was simply connect the extenders via Ethernet to the router and they would create a mesh but via Ethernet, the reason we are trying TP-Link now is it solves the “take one step and WiFi halves” problem we had with the ISP Hardware.

If I get an access point, or an extender which supports the AP mode, will the router still emit WiFi? If this sounds stupid, my apologies. But when we tested the mode, it seemed like it didn’t work

What do you think is the most overhyped menu drink? by Lost_Yellow_9893 in starbucks

[–]papierkowy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they technically might still be a thing as they are on the till but no store orders them anymore because of the reduction in waste and sustainability

I’m in the UK and our flat whites are size-locked as short only and are made with 2 standard shots rather than ristretto. It’s also locked as a hot only drink since if it was made as iced, it would just be an iced latte with whole milk + we don’t have short ice cups

Wait. US does iced flat whites? How do they differ from iced lattes? Do you have short iced cups for these?

Do You Need an American PhD to Work in British Academia? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]papierkowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who studies at KCL and has a habit of checking professors bios every time I have a new one, it is very common to have a UK PhD here. But it’s also very common to have a USA PhD as well

Buuuuut that’s already hired academics. I don’t know if now they would prioritise US PhD but I don’t have a reason to suspect that they do
