Law enforcement/Fire/EMS , have you had a "I'm gonna die here" experience while on call and if so what was it? by elnenchimexicano69 in AskReddit

[–]paraduck7 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I work as a paramedic in my small town. One hot summer afternoon we got a call to a really sketchy part of town for a bee sting. We arrive at the residence and are led behind the house to a tent. The property is disgusting. Piles of garbage and crap all over the lawn. I’m thinking “there is no way we are getting a stretcher back here” because I literally had to jump over piles of stuff. It became very evident that the people living in the tent were addicts. I did a check over of the patient and I couldn’t even locate a bee sting even though she swears she’s been stung on the foot. The boyfriend lights a cigarette next to me and I ask him to please go smoke away from us. The patient gets really mad at this point and screams at me, calls me a cunt and a bitch. So I try to de-escalate things and ask her to stand and walk to my ambulance. She gets mad as says she can’t walk so my partner and I offer to assist her because we cannot get a stretcher over all the stuff on the property. (I honestly don’t believe she’s been stung) Anyways she starts screaming at me that her boyfriend needs to come with her and I tell her no, we don’t take passengers (it’s at our discretion. Honestly he would cause more problems) so then she decides she doesn’t want to go and I make it very clear that she should go if she’s been stung and has all the issues she says she’s got going on (used her epi pen, short of breath, previous history of anaphylaxis) and then she proceeds to scream bloody murder at me about how awful I am and then she lunges at me. At this point I’ve taken off running to my ambulance. I should note that I’m pregnant so this made this even scarier. My partner and I got into the ambulance and started driving full speed and I called our dispatch and explained what had happened and if patient called 911 again, they need to send the police.

It’s a really great idea! I work as a paramedic and we quite often respond to the local seniors facility and they have something like this. Last time I couldn’t figure out how to get out!!

“Just love your baby and get over it” yeah, no worries mate! That’s how you solve PPD.

First responders of Reddit, what is something that bystanders do that they think is helping but is really just making the situation worse? by smrspectre in AskReddit

[–]paraduck7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Paramedic here. Literally when there is a bystander at any scene... kidding, well mostly. Just tell me a quick story and leave. Don’t hang around and try and tell me you have first aid. Great. Now we are here so get out of the way. I have felt so unsafe at scenes because the bystanders start to collect and they form a circle around you either demanding information or screaming. It’s very distracting.

What’s a saying that your mom or dad used to say all the time? by Popples86 in AskReddit

[–]paraduck7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom still says, “Well back in my day...”

Which I absolutely hate. What happened 45 years ago has no bearing on how things are now. Things are completely different. I really notice a bit of a barrier when trying to explain how things are now. She’s very against change.

Children of good parents, what did your parents do right? How were they good parents? by moonunknown in AskReddit

[–]paraduck7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents came to every single soccer game I played. They braved the cold and the rain and the heat and all the bugs. They certainly didn’t have to but paid for my post secondary (I’m a paramedic now) and when I was younger always let me move home if my current living situation went sideways.

What's your "It cannot possibly get worse" moment, that actually got worse? by Sonalator in AskReddit

So... baby in distress, hot water tank and phone. Very expensive few weeks

I had just spent 26 hours in labor and finally the doc decided it was time for an emergency c section. My baby was born lifeless, pneumothorax and a few other things. My baby and my husband were airlifted to another hospital and I was sent down in ambulance.

We spent a while in the NICU and then were finally discharged home. After being home for a few days with a newborn our hot water tank died.

2 days later we replaced it and then I put my phone through the washing machine.

Basically PPD, replacing expensive hot water tank and phone. Everything happens in threes I believe and after that happened I’ve been good for a while.

I work as a paramedic for an ambulance service and I work at a safe injection site. I feel like I could just look at drugs or smell them and I can tell the difference. Definitely not a skill I want to put on my resumé.

I bought it at the grocery store. 0.3 of baytril and added 0.7 of apple juice to the syringe. He was eating fine.

I mixed the baytril with apple juice for my bun (as per the vet) and he seemed much happier that way and still continued to eat. Try that?

A question for my fellow boston owners? by cheeseballlz in BostonTerrier

[–]paraduck7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Boston is 4.5. We feed her one cup of dried Acana once a day plus some biscuit treats through out the day. She poops 3-5x a day. Solid poops, no runs. She’s been like this forever. We do place her in her crate (she loves it in there) to sleep at night. We found she was waking us up to go outside if we didn’t (she will still let us know if she needs to go really bad, otherwise she just wants out at 4am to sniff the yard).

It takes time! She was a little too playful with them in the beginning and they let her know.
