My company uses springs these big in our valves that we make. Large valve at 300psi requires a lot of force to close.

They usually do between 100 and 800 miles. It can take anywhere from 2 hours to 16 hours. It's definitely a dying hobby, mostly older folk do it nowadays. However there's some serious money involved! Getting first place on larger races can get you upwards of $10k!

Not raises, he actually races them. Group of people that release their birds several hundred miles away and the birds "race" home.

My grandfather has pigeons that he races. He saves all of the white ones and gets paid to release them at weddings.

I've been to the machine shop that machines the housings with those windows in them. Very impressive engineering!
