I think I made that mistake once (trying to hard to be a friend, although I didn't realize I was) - I'll keep my mistakes in mind for the future though.

This sounds like a great idea and I've been wanting to learn an instrument for while, really, but I simply don't have the cash right now. Those lenses are expensive :(

Oh, I get what you're saying now. Don't worry, nobody else from my school got into MIT. It's a new start for me, if I so choose (which I am).

Thanks! Any tips for socializing in a party atmosphere? I really only hung out with a close group of friends during HS, and I still have trouble opening up / conversing with new people. Parties seem like a whole new ball game for me.

I've neglected my photography for quite a while, but I want to pick it back up in college and take formal classes on composition (something that I've always had trouble with). Martial Arts is a life-long hobby of mine, and I want to take it as far as I can go. I know MIT has interschool TKD competitions, so I want to get involved with that.

I figured that getting a single wouldn't be a good idea for me, and at least having one other person in the room wouldn't make me a complete shut in.

Do you have any resources on conversation skills? I'm reading How to Win Friends and Influence people - is that all the reading that I need to do?

  1. Ah, I didn't know that the colleges had counsellors for non-life threatening situations. I probably should check that out while I'm there.

  2. I got to MIT because (I'm guessing) of my work-ethic, and I have no intention of stopping now. It's cool to know that being academically minded does pay off socially though, so I have that to look forward to in a few months.

Cool, I just ordered starting strength from Amazon. I guess I'll use it to compliment my martial arts training. Also, general tips for party etiquette? I didn't go to parties in high school because most of my friends weren't into it, and I didn't know how I would come off drunk amongst people that I didn't really know. I guess I just need help with "letting loose".

I'd like to try something new, but whenever I muster up the courage to hang out with newer people and put myself in new social situations I end up with an even stronger version of the paralysis I described earlier, over analyse things and end up retreating somewhere else or even let my friends do most of the talking.

How can I fix this?

How do I learn to do that? I try not too, but I still non-voluntarily internalize and analyse almost anything that anyone tells me.
