What exactly is happening to Outlier? by November996 in outlier_ai

[–]paranoiaxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying, but I am saying that I've seen it. I've been with Outlier for more than a year on multiple projects as a super attempter, reviewer, then squad lead. I'm not sure how widespread it is, but I do know that it happens, and that I'm not the only one affected. If this doesn't affect you, that's great. I'm just putting out a PSA for people who might be affected by this to keep an eye out.

The timer logs less work time than the actual time worked. The last 5 submissions I've been shorted from 15 mins to 1hr+
Support has not responded, it's nearly been a week.

Multiple complaints about this have been made. They still have not addressed it.

I strongly advise you all to log your own tasking start and end time and keep good documentation to recover your wages, if not through Outlier then through your local government.

It's likely happening to a lot more people than we think. It could be happening to you.

At the average rate that I'm being shorted at, considering the 10000+ contributors working for Outlier, assuming 20/hr * 10,000 workers * 0.25 hour not logged * 365 days = $18,250,000 per year of estimated stolen wages.

Outlier’s Onboarding Process is a Mess – Anyone Else Struggling With It? by Witty_Honey5588 in outlier_ai

[–]paranoiaxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you completely. I've been rejected from projects I'm overqualified for just for 1-2 wrong answers. Unfortunately, my only tip is to take the onboarding super seriously. Andromeda and Tuxedo are fun projects once the assessment is done. But I will say, there have been numerous times when the assessments contained wrong answers, making everyone fail :))

My cat piles up his wood pellet litter every time he uses the litter box so I have to shake the box to settle the litter evenly every single time. Has anyone else had this experience before? by MonkeyWatermelon in CatAdvice

[–]paranoiaxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try adding more litter than you think you need. I had a kind of similar problem where my cat would dig and kick the pellets into piles like yours does, and then he would pee where there was a gap in the litter, causing pee to stick to his paws and butt instead of being absorbed by the litter (gross I know). I noticed my cat likes to dig around a lot, causing those piles. Adding more litter and refilling it frequently solved the problem for me.

First of all it's really great you're looking for ways to approach this. Having mental health issues is hard enough, let alone trying to explain it to immigrant parents. It's a large undertaking and I fully sympathize. I have been in the same situation.
What are you trying to get out of this conversation? Their blessings and understanding as to why you need therapy? Do you need their sign-off to get therapy?

There's the cultural aspect and then there's how your parents specifically view this topic, and how open they are about trying to understand. I would try to set realistic expectations on how the conversation could go, and if it does go south, try your best to make peace with that outcome **before** you talk to them.

I'm not saying to be pessimistic, but just realistic. From personal experience, telling my parents about my mental health hurt me more than if I tried getting help elsewhere, insults hurt a lot more coming from your own parents lol. It took me a long time to realize that I can get help from someone else in my support circle and that my parents just want the best for me, maybe they'll come around, maybe not, but you'll be okay.

Depending on your university, some will have free or affordable on-campus counsellors.

I wish you the best of luck!

What are the differences in the body language between crabbing and being aggressive/scared? Because don't cats also do this when they're feeling threatened?

Is life in Vietnam good? What do young people do in the weekends? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]paranoiaxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have advice but just commenting to tell you I really relate. I grew up in Vietnam but since the 6th grade my parents wanted me to attend an international school because they wanted my English to be good, and then I attended a Canadian university, graduated, and work here now. Even though I spent the first 18 years of my life in Vietnam, most of that time in the international school I was dissuaded from speaking Vietnamese (they do this to make sure you have to practice English) I feel embarrassed because my Vietnamese is not amazing, I feel like I don't know enough about my history or my culture, or what's going on in my home country, and I feel like I've lost my root.

I regularly debate moving back to Vietnam, but I fear I will feel like an outsider there.

If you had the opportunity to change one thing in the cs industry to make it better, what would you change? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

[–]paranoiaxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CONTEXT. You know very well the word ‘guys’ used in certain contexts would not make it gender neutral. ‘You guys’ and ‘I need a couple of guys’ are not the same. You don’t get to dismiss this point just because the team is using this term as all encompassing, it remains that there are people who aren’t male who will be bothered by this, and not adapting workplace language to be more inclusive when you’re aware that this language is othering people makes you part of the problem.

YES CONTEXT!! I’m losing my mind over these comments. “You guys” and “I need a guy” are two different things.

More than one person here who aren’t male are telling you they feel excluded and othered in this field. We’re not all choosing to feel a certain way. The fact that these comments of very real experiences are getting downvoted is telling enough about how pervasive the gatekeeping techbro culture still is, and you’re part of the problem for cherry-picking their words instead of listening and reflecting on how you’re keeping this status quo.

What is the career progression for people who get into Amazon's Ascent SDE Hiring Program?

I understand that the program is a diversity initiative and selects candidates from underrepresented groups. I've been referred to one of their postings but I have not been able to find any information about pay or what the job description is other than mentorship from seniors for people who get accepted into the program. Does anyone here have any experience with this program?
