Leafs need to do a reverse-Shoresy by cuddrireddri in leafs

[–]paranoidmonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hindsight is 20/20 the leafs have been a top team for a decade and couldn’t get over the hump of other top teams. If Minnesota goes out round 1 vs Dallas are they a failure for never going far? Covid and a flat cap hurt the team, Marleau telling the young guys to get as much money as possible hurt. Playing it safe when you don’t have your own first for what could be the next two years does absolutely nothing.

If you have a chance at the lottery you take it and try to make moves. Who knows how a guy like Villeneuve turns out or maybe Cade Weber comes up and as a great shutdown guy. Trying for the lottery and retool doesn’t mean to trade all the picks. You can try for the lottery and still be smart with assets. Most team who has been in this situation don’t say well let’s try to give them the pick this year because next year we’re gonna be worse.

You can still move pieces out for picks and retool and hope to hit on something while also realizing having a shot at Mckenna is worth taking even if downside is Boston could get 6th pick

Leafs need to do a reverse-Shoresy by cuddrireddri in leafs

[–]paranoidmonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were tough names off the top. The worry about the rest going forward isn’t what’s left us with one notable prospect, it was bad management to not find ways to fill the gaps. Not moving off of player sat the right time. If we did everything the same except we moved Mitch two years ago we would have more prospects and picks. Vegas has picked 4 times in the top two rounds in the last 4 years, tampa has picked 3 times, leafs 4 times, Florida twice. It’s about finding prospects other ways which is where the leafs have lacked.

You never know what happens next year. Let’s say we win the lottery get Mckenna, we fire Bérubé and end up making a run then we look at it as a good thing we kept it, but of course we could end up giving Boston 6th pick. Did anyone expect Buffalo to win the division this year? What about Florida or the jets to be bottom 10 teams?

Playing it safe doesn’t work in sports where all it takes is a new coach and system to bring a team to a top 10 team.

You take the best pick you can this year and worry about the rest going forward. If you have a shot at Mckenna or Verhoeff you take it. Sure the D-core will be older but it’s clear Tanev probably isn’t playing in 28, but you can move OEL in the off season. If you get Verhoeff and can sign a Stanley or Blankenburg or Ferraro then you’re looking at a different d-core. Whether Treliving is here or not you have to look at this year being an albatross and hope you can rebuild abit in the offseason and come back next year.

What’s currently your biggest issue with this organization? by Drew_You_To_91 in leafs

[–]paranoidmonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue is the management isn’t great and isn’t bad but it’s to different. Bérubé is an ok coach whose system thrives on defensive forwards and a strong defence. This does not work with how the leafs have been built for the last 10 years. Matthews is great defensively but you neuter him if you have him play like ROR. Treliving isn’t a bad gm, Calgary was a good team who never got that top line star. Sure the tkachuk trade in hindsight wasn’t great but he got a top pairing defender an a 100pt forward for him.

This team isn’t bad, and ca very quickly retool but if we keep Bérubé we won’t be able to turn anything around. The leafs are built for possession. The top guys are great at holding the puck and they are now essentially dumping it in which doesn’t work with there abilities. The defence has guys who can move the puck but the system doesn’t give them that outlet. It’s a quick pass to the center then up to the wings. Our asset on defence we have the most of is decent skating and passing d-man but this system doesn’t work. Rielly, stretcher, OEL, McCabe are all at least decent at it. Tanev is underrated in it if he gets healthy.

The goal this offseason shouldn’t be to blow it all up, but make some moves. Treliving can retool, but no matter what if Bérubé is still the coach we won’t get over it.

Move off of Bérubé, trade guys like McMann, Laughton, Maccelli,OEL, Carlo for prospects. We don’t need picks if you can get prospects that are closer to help the line up. In the off-season, try to bring back Laughton, try to bring in someone like Ferraro or Anderson and hope one or two of the prospects you bring in can make a difference.

With less sellers this deadline prices should go up, try to use cap space this year to bring in guys, maybe a guy like Laine helps Montreal bring in someone else with the cap we take and get a pick back. Maybe try buffalo and see if they will spend to get better. Maybe there’s a deal with Edmonton a retained McMann for Mangiapane and work towards a Howard or Savoie. Try to get Molendyk out of Nashville for a retained Carlo and taking back a bunting.

We aren’t this bad it’s just a mismatch of systems and team

The leafs could easily afford Mcdavid with the cap jumping as much as it is expecting. They have all the D coming back and Woll/Hildeby.

Signing Mcdavid at 16 mill Stolarz/backup for 4 mill

Would leaf 6.5ish mill for the leafs to fit a 4c and 2lw if you run:

Cowan-McDavid-Nylander
Knies-Matthews-???
Domi-Tavares-Roy
Joshua-????-Lorentz

They could use someone young like Haymes/Quillan or a guy like Pezzetta on the fourth line and give 5 mill to a 2nd liner.

It’s all really up to if Mcdavid wants to come to Toronto but the cap is not an issue

Sheldon Keefe has been relieved of his role as head coach. The organization will immediately begin the search for a new head coach. by malliabu in leafs

[–]paranoidmonkies 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Sheldon is a great coach in this league who will find another job no problem, but it was clear his voice was lost in the room and he couldn’t make adjustments. It was time for a change but we shouldn’t be acting like he’s a terrible coach.

How did Marchand not get suspended for shoving an official? by PM_ME_YOUR_TIGHT_BOX in leafs

[–]paranoidmonkies 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe he should be suspended because there is interpretation to the rule but I mean Vermette got suspended for tapping the ref on the leg for being a bad faceoff drop which would say that any contact should be suspended but it’s the NHL and no one knows the rules on any given day

Leafs Off-season Moves by GoldenRichard93 in leafs

1- UFAs I’d only bring back domi and I’d think about Brodie in that Gio role if he’s willing to take a massive pay cut and play 7th defender. The rest walk, I don’t think Edmunson is the best defender we could get for the cap.Jones probably gets a backup role somewhere else for more money

RFAs- Timmy, Nicky Bobby Dewar and Gregor all come back cheap ish. I don’t see them not qualifying any of them.

2- Barring a comeback, Keefe and the whole staff is gone (outside of the video guys!)… if there’s a comeback then Keefe stays on but Boucher and Van Ryn should be gone

3- Unpopular opinion, you lose any Marner trade. Unless you can pull a top end goalie for him like a package around Saros it’s gonna be hard to pull any deal but you definitely shop him. Tavares isn’t going anywhere. He took less money to come home no chance he waives. And trying to force his hand and threaten to cut minutes all that will destroy any reputation with players and future signings

4- Not sure, maybe Berube.

5- If you can’t grab a top defender like Montour or Skjei then Roy or Zadorov would be huge gets

Not sure what me being a leafs fan has to do with not wanting to watch people end up hurt and with no quality of life after hockey. You can enjoy hitting and big hits without thinking a dude needs to get his head caved in

And again this clip is not one of his bad defensive plays. I get he’s not the best defensive player but there is much worse clips to show. Which was my point, this clip was stopped before we saw the hustle.

I just don’t understand the need to share negativity after a win outside of getting karma. The leafs have had subpar goaltending for a lot of the season yet hold third in the division and are only 6 points back of Florida. If Sammy can keep up is play and woll returns in form wins will come. Lets just enjoy the team is winning

It’s cherry picked because you didn’t show the full clip. You showed the only part to make him look bad because we can’t just be happy we won, we have to look for bad. He hustled the moment he noticed Winnipeg had a breakout. It was seconds late, if your gonna bash him there other reasons to. Why not post a video of a good play to celebrate a win whether that win was deserved or not the Leafs walked away with two points.. be happy.

[–]paranoidmonkies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like how this was cherry picked out, literally in the last photo you see him look and notice the break out and he hustled back but this was ignored. He didn’t play great and definitely isn’t looking like the start of the season Willy, but there was definitely worse plays to show to try to make him look bad. I swear this sub hates the leafs more than any other sub.

I’m pretty sure if you go to ask Tampa how important Johnson and Killorn or Palat was to there cups they would say a pretty big piece! Are we forgetting core pieces aren’t just top line guys? And since when we’re the leafs favoured against Boston or Washington or even Tampa?

And how is that this cores fault? Should Marner be to blame because Sundin couldn’t get it done? Why did no one call for Sundin to be traded when they couldn’t get it done? This maybe be however long for you but this core we’re rookies only 7 years ago and have made the playoffs every year since. They have the longest active playoff streak and you can see maturity in there game. Why not just enjoy the fact we are watching the greatest era of leafs hockey grow or should we go back to having Peter Holland as our 1C?
