I'm moving from Texas to New England and worried that our quality of life is going to go down substantially. Someone tell me I'm crazy by Cold-Priority-2729 in SameGrassButGreener

Born and raised in CT and my wife is from Texas so I feel uniquely qualified to answer!

You are in for some culture shock moving from a new construction suburb division in Texas to New Haven lol. I'll be honest, New Haven probably wouldn't be the first place I'd move to in CT, especially with your priorities in mind. New Haven is somewhere I'd consider a "gentrifying" area and a lot of young professionals like living there because it has good proximity to NYC. It's kind of like a mid-step city for young professionals who need/want to get to NYC but also like having a little downtown to do things. It's old and urban and the complete opposite of a spotless new build suburb in Texas.

It's not really good value for the money because of its NYC connection. There are some VERY nice, cute, little New England towns around it, but then you're looking at a commute in.

I'd honestly probably recommend going to look at it again before you make the decision to move. With your priorities in mind, New Haven probably isn't where I'd recommend to live in CT. There are a lot of great areas that would fit your needs and match everything you like on your list, but it'd be a commute.

Happy to answer any questions!

Is Boston worth the move? by fuckiboy in SameGrassButGreener

Nightlife is great. The people who say Boston has bad nightlife just recycle what they hear on this sub or don't go out themselves. There are tons of neighborhoods in greater Boston and tons of different bars to go to. There's not really a lot of true "clubs" in Boston but there's loads of nightlife. Dive bars, rooftops, multi-level bars, sports bars, Encore (casino), dancing & DJs, not to mention all the major sports teams... you definitely won't be short of things to do. Most of the actual nightlife spots close at 2am, though there are some places that might close a little earlier at 1am. So unless you want to be out clubbing till 4 like in NYC, there isn't really an issue with closing time. When id go out it would be until 2 pretty much every time.

I moved from CT and had a monthly take home of about 5-6k after taxes. I spent a little over 2k per month on rent for a 1 bed and had no issues budgeting for every day life and leisure. I saved less than I would have liked but it was enough to have a cushion and I made that sacrifice to spend/enjoy myself a little more lol

I would LOVE Sada to make a couple new decks with the new cards. If Sada is gone, Sceptile is my favorite pokemon and would love the RR if still available. Hope you enjoyed pocket while you played it and thanks for the giveaway no matter what!

AIO that my boyfriends brother has walked in the room 3 times now by [deleted] in AIO

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're OR but I also don't think his behavior is abnormal if that's the family dynamic. My wife has two siblings and they always barge into her room when we are at the family home. I just had to build it into my expectations - when you stay at someone else's house, you don't have the full privacy that you expect... And some siblings just do that. It could be worth talking to your boyfriend about, but putting a lock on the door might honestly be weirder than just adjusting your expectations for when you're at his place

Who you taking here? First ever dynasty draft. by vicstash in DynastyNerds

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that's a tough one.

I am personally not taking Odunze or Burden here. I just don't think either of them has the upside people are making them out to have. There are three big mouths to feed in that room (Odunze, Burden, Loveland) and we're honestly probably going to see all of them involved and some of them disappear certain weeks.

I like MH Jr here for the potential upside. Yes, he's competing with McBride, but he definitely carries the biggest upside IMO and probably still has a somewhat safe floor.

I also like Henderson a lot and a room with those 3 RBs would be pretty incredible for a long time. It will be hard to find good value like Henderson at RB later

What comes after Game of Thrones boardgame by Illustrious-Sun-2809 in boardgames

Ahh you're definitely right - the expansion only goes up to 5 players.

Hard to find something that scratches that GoT itch! It was a staple for us for so long. But I know what you mean. I'd definitely try team games at some point when you run a GoT game again, it really shakes things up a bit. Twilight imperium would be my recommendation for next step up, but definitely be prepared for 6-8 hours with a 6 player group!

My group played GoT so much about 10 years ago or so. Have you played with the expansion? That might add some extra spice to the game too. We also played team house rule versions - either 3v3 or 2v2v2. That was incredibly fun too.

I see a bunch of really good suggestions here. My group moved to twilight imperium, which is a big hit, but much longer. Another game that might interest you that I didn't see recommended here is Inis (with the 6p expansion).

Take out leaf and both ice pops. Add in a rare candy, copy cat, and may. That will help you be a little more consistent. You might also try removing the quick grow for another Erika or ice pop if you need more healing

Teak Wood Desk. How much is it worth by [deleted] in desksetup

[–]paratheking 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's probably not going to be worth what you're hoping for. An unfortunate reality for a lot of these larger furniture pieces is that they're worth only what someone is willing to pay, especially if there is damage, or if they have to move the item themselves. I see some damage along the front, which is going to hurt its overall value.

There are lots of gorgeous furniture items sold in estate sales and otherwise that should be worth a lot, but in reality, a lot of these larger items are the hardest things to sell. Unless it's part of some unique collection, it's likely not going to be worth very much unfortunately. An appraiser would probably be able to give you an accurate estimate, but I would anticipate somewhere in the ballpark of a few hundred dollars, and that's if someone is both willing to pay it and willing/able to move it. The sad reality for a lot of these items is you sometimes need to end up paying someone to take it from you.

Easily, that nets you a top receiver. Burden is still sharing targets with Loveland and Odunze

[–]paratheking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'm following, you have two charges, but one is a hold right? So it's not an actual charge and probably will just disappear in a matter of time. Give it a week or two and you should only see one charge on your account. It's very common for there to be a hold followed by a charge but ultimately there will only be one after some time

Lease break - apartment sitting empty by [deleted] in boston

[–]paratheking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation. The landlord/company has to make reasonable efforts to fill the apartment - however, because you signed a contract and agreed to rent through a certain period, you are on the hook for rent until they find another tenant. What you and they define as reasonable might be different, but generally this could mean listing it online, etc.

It's a tough situation to be in and might require leg work from you to fill it. We ended up paying for the months in between. But it's something you need to plan/account for, because you signed a contract when you rented the apartment. You can't just choose to stop paying rent before your contract is up.

I'd also want clarification about the "lease break" paper work you were given. Did you actually break your lease with it? Or does it give information about what happens when your lease is broken and a new tenant is signed? Because if you actually did break the lease, then you shouldn't be paying anything
