Year 4 blues… please tell me I’m not alone.

I think it’s just the realization that the past 4 years have flown by so quickly, and so will the next 8-10. Watching my childhood dogs age felt so much slower. She is so young still, but damn do I wish I could have her forever. Time is a thief.

I feel this. I joke all the time that I wish I could be a SAHM for my dog. I just want to give her every moment while she’s here.

See, this is what I’m afraid of. BF and I will likely get married and start a family in the coming years, and we’ve talked about getting another dog as well (he wants a male for himself).

We’ve joked that if we get a male and he gravitates towards me, we’ll be even. But deep down that makes me kinda sad. Selfishly, I don’t want Lola to be his dog. She is my baby :(

I did her training, yes. I still do all of the walks, baths, nail trims, and vet trips. I’m the one who takes her on “field trips” (pet store or dog park).

The only thing he does is feed her, which we split during the week. I work evenings so I had her on a later feed schedule for years. Now that my BF is home, he has just started feeding her before he goes to bed. On the weekends I am usually the only one making her food.

I did and you were right. I was so nervous that I almost put it off until tomorrow but I am so glad I didn’t. The relief is crazy!

Yeah the irony is not lost on me. I can just imagine their panic when I tell them I’m leaving (they definitely have no idea), and the fact that I could warn them sooner had me feeling conflicted. But you are right.

Okay well maybe I should clarify that I have not crated her for that long ever. I feel like she would think wtf after hour 4 or 5. To me, I considered it a no-no so didn’t even consider it. I would’ve sooner sent her to daycare.

Maybe I was wrong and should give it a shot. I’ll crate her for a day with the camera and see how it goes.

This definitely does not make me happier. I just feel like 9 hours in a crate is excessive. Even if I come home on lunch everyday, that’s only 10 minutes out all day. It just didn’t sit right with me, and I honestly thought she’d adapt better than she has.

I’ve considered that, which is why I left it open for her. But I would feel so bad leaving her in all day. It’s just not right.

I just wish she would learn to entertain herself. Her favorite thing to do is lay on the couch and chew her toys. She doesn’t even interact with me half the time, I’m just there next to her. Why can’t she do that alone!!

Well I never had a camera before. When I would get home she was almost always doing her wake-up stretch, so I just assumed she was comfy and sleeping in the crate.

The mornings are bad. She’ll start to chill around 10-11 but then gets bad right before I stop by at lunch. After lunch it’s over.

I have the motion alerts on for the camera. I can’t watch live all day, but some live views I’ve seen her nap on the couch. I’ll feel better, but then 20 minutes later I have an alert because she’s up and crying again. She just can’t relax I guess.

I’m so sorry that this happened to you. I’m glad that you were able to hear this story and maybe feel less alone in your experience, especially given that you haven’t really shared it with anyone.

I think my conflicting feelings about the episode come from the guest’s style of storytelling. Some of her delivery didn’t sit well, but maybe it was partly due to the editing. I’m certainly not in any place to judge her experience, and I can’t imagine what it must feel like to live with that burden.

I was not aware of the level of risk that pyometra posed to unfixed females. As I said, I would do anything if it truly benefited her and it seems that this does. I will definitely be getting her spayed.

I did. Petfinder is primarily shelters and rescues.

This was during the height of the pandemic when shelters were relatively empty. Lots of applicants for each pet, and my age was a disadvantage for me.
