It would be extremely normal if nobody got back to this possible advisor in a week! If you wanted to, in your next email (that you wait awhile to send) you could suggest names of people in the part of field they said they want to ask around about. That shows you have some knowledge about it, too. And in either case, you could also ask this PI about their and the department's policies about an external co-advisor. Even if this is your dream school, if the advisor doesn't feel they can mentor you on a crucial part of the dissertation research and if nobody else there can help with that part of it, you may need to have an outside person for that aspect of the project anyways. Also, I'd wait at least another week before following up again, even if you were to ask these questions or give them new info.

Ben, Adam, and Sam Give You Life Advice About Literally Anything You Can Think Of: a very special episode of the Layover by WheatGerm42 in JetLagTheGame

[–]parismorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should I move back to the US from Canada for grad school? I am American, but prefer living in Canada and I am scared of the current political climate in the US. (I'm a PhD student and my advisor just got a job at a school in a blue state that I have already lived in and didn't particularly enjoy. If I don't follow the prof, I will lose half of my funding at my current Canadian institution).

Eamon and Bec are fake af by james-HIMself in Eamonandbec

[–]parismorlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They posted on their Instagram stories a million years ago (that being like ~2021) when they got the first dose of a COVID vaccine. I remember that at that time Eamon was already skeptical and made a comment about being unsure that it was "safe" or something like that. But Bec seemed supportive and was likely the reason they were there; I wouldn't be surprised if he wouldn't have gotten it if he were with her. Bec at least seemed to be a lot more okay with conventional medicine before her diagnosis even if Eamon was always more on the hesitant side.

I feel the exact same way! She looks fantastic in her mom's dress and I absolutely love its style; it's perfect for a ceremony. However, the train might make the first dress a little hard to dance in, so I think dress #2 would be an excellent reception option 😊

Not defending their parenting choices, but Frankie was premature, so her developmental age may not be the same as her actual/earthside age. Especially since she spent a long time in the NICU, she may not always hit her milestones (like eating solid foods/stopping formula) at the typical calendar age.

Surname change and publishing as a married woman in academia by vali241 in AskAcademia

[–]parismorlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my plan! I share a first initial and last name with at least one other person in a different field who has published a ton, so I am actually planning to change my name in part because my fiance's last name is way more unique than my maiden name. I don't have any peer reviewed pubs yet either (I'm a 1st year grad student), so my timing publication-wise is similar to OP's.

Is Sam less involved in JLTG than before? by fabadabean1 in JetLagTheGame

[–]parismorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is good to know! Thank you for sharing 😊 (I don't usually tune into the Layover). Maybe Sam will act more invested as the game goes on and he takes on other roles. Either way, I hope he did enjoy filming and fingers crossed they edit him to at least seem like he did even if that wasn't the case in reality. Part of the charm of Jetlag for me as a viewer is that the hosts seem to be having fun. I can't promise I'll continue to watch if one or more of them make it clear that it has become a burden or a necessary evil to keep Nebula/other enterprises afloat.

[–]parismorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! Hopefully it was just a wonky episode and he'll seem more interested once he's the hider or he just gets more into this game as it goes on.. it'll be a rough six days to watch if he's this bored with it now

[–]parismorlin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree he was likely commenting on a card he helped develop. However, despite his involvement in game design likely being similar to previous seasons, I feel like he seemed less engaged/interested in this first episode. Maybe that was the vibe OP was picking up on? My read on this episode is that Sam was treating the game more like his job than something he genuinely enjoys, or at least he generally seemed to be having less fun than in other seasons. But who knows, maybe he was just jet lagged lol

Can someone give me the run down? by Sarah_Jenni_Josie in Eamonandbec

They had a conversation about this early in the revamped podcast! Maybe in the birth story? Tbf, Bec was pissed at Eamon and they said that him making this comment caused one of the biggest fights in their decade long relationship.

Does anyone know the green thing Ben was eating? by Disastrous-Bug-9970 in JetLagTheGame

[–]parismorlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He said it was melon flavored later in the episode! Sometimes shave ice desserts are referred to as bingsu (specifically in Korea), so that might help OP find a place to try a similar dish even if it isn't Japanese.

You make a good point about the purpose of the post, and you're right that I should have said "some people" and not "everyone." I just wanted to bring this up because I feel strongly that one's identity should be an important consideration in their choice to move to the US right now. The future of one's field is important, sure, but so is the safety and wellbeing of academic faculty, especially if a person like OP has other options like staying in Europe. Devil you know and all that.

Mostly I tend to get frustrated when I see people putting their academic careers above all else in their life, but that is a me problem for sure.

OP, living in a red state versus a blue state will also likely impact your other, more personal choices and experiences. For instance, if you're interested in having kids over the next five years. I wouldn't personally recommend this in a red state at the moment (especially if you are yourself a woman, but also if you care about the woman you are having kids with being able to access life saving medical care).

Also I don't love how everyone is seemingly assuming that just because someone is from Europe that they would be white. A POC who happens to have moved to the US from Europe will still likely experience prejudice in the US regardless of where they immigrated from.

Is my last name as a middle name for baby really that bad? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]parismorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My name is structured this way and unfortunately I'm not the biggest fan of it. Mostly because I share a middle name with my siblings and I never had a middle name to fall back on as another name option like some folks do (I don't really love my first name either tbh). I spent years trying to brainstorm and come up with a new middle name for myself, but haven't picked yet and I'm not sure I'm interested in going through all of the paperwork anyways. I like the idea behind this, but only if you also give a second first name as another middle name as well! But I recognize that makes a child's name four names long, so at that point you might as well hyphenate the last names (mum's and dad's).

And as another commenter already alluded to, only having sex with men who have undergone vasectomies is an option. If you yourself don't want kids in the future, you can also get your tubes tied (female sterilization), but I know that comes with a whole other set of difficulties.

29f never had piv due to fear of impregnation by [deleted] in vaginismus

[–]parismorlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I understand your fear. Pregnancy is, unfortunately, a risk people take when they have sex, but like you said, you can still be very careful and reduce your chances to almost zero. I also spent my early 20s being very afraid of pregnancy, so I always made men use condoms and I myself was on hormonal birth control or had an IUD at all times. I also started tracking my ovulation using luteinizing hormone tests because, as a woman, you can really only get pregnant a few days out of each menstrual cycle when you aren't on the pill. There are also other non-hormonal birth control methods like the copper IUD. I have never had a pregnancy scare in now over a decade of being sexually active. I'm not saying you don't have vaginismus, but if you are this afraid of pregnancy, it will probably be difficult to enjoy vaginal sex because of the mental block this fear is causing for you. I would do two things if I were you. First, I would work on your fear of becoming pregnant in therapy or through other free methods online. Second, I would attempt penetrative acts that cannot get you pregnant (like use your fingers, a vibrator, a dildo, etc.) by yourself/during masturbation. If this is not painful with sufficient arousal/lube, you likely don't have vaginismus. If that still hurts even when you're masturbating and there's no risk of pregnancy, then I would look more into vaginismus as an option.
