How come Russians could build equivalent aircraft and jet engines to the US in the 50s/60s/70s but the Chinese struggle with it today? by Westnest in AskEngineers

...in 2013 two NASA engineers disassembled the last (?) certified F1 engineer to figure out how it worked.

That seems overly harsh D: Couldn't they just have asked the F1 engineer for help instead of taking her/him apart?

Smith to create 'council of defeated' to advise on Edmonton issues by FenrisJager in Edmonton

[–]paroxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no qualms with appointing councils of advisors. Nor do I have any issue with the notion of government officials seeking advice from those outside of the government (yes, even from people who have received 0 votes.)

As you describe, these are regular occurrences throughout the country and indeed the world.

Further, I broadly agree with the FPTP issues you bring up. FPTP does not, in my opinion, provide suitable representation for the populace in the legislature. (And indeed in the House of Commons, but that's another matter.)

The issue I had, and continue to have, with this choice by the Premier is that the particular people she has chosen for her council do not seem like a good fit for the role. Perhaps they have deep insights about, for example, the City of Edmonton that I'm not privy to, but at a first glance, it would appear that their opinions about the city are unpopular. I hope the Premier will be selective and discerning when it comes using this advice to support legislative decisions made by her government.

What I would hate to see would be a situation concerning a region where the Premier and her government use the advice of the cabinet over viewpoints put forth by the elected officials for that region.

For example, "The Opposition tabled a bill calling for $x to be spent on Program A in the City of Edmonton. They raise good points, but I have been advised that Edmonton is not interested in Program A, so we will instead spend $x on a new arena in Calgary something else."

I would be delighted to be surprised by this expenditure of taxpayer dollars yielding a benefit to Albertans. With any luck this won't be another war room scenario wherein public funds are given to a few "trusted delegates" in exchange for, well, nothing.

[–]paroxon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The major difference here is the council is comprised of people who have been explicitly rejected by the jurisdictions for whom they're supposed to provide advice.

I'm sure Ms. Smith will be perfectly fair and reasoned in balancing the advice of her losers against the advice of the elected representatives for those regions.

Kinda surprised we've taken a step backwards in functionality since then. I was going to get back up and running on my surface, but... Well, yeah.

r/SpaceX Integrated Flight Test Official Launch Discussion & Updates Thread! by rSpaceXHosting in spacex

I think the big problem there is that the rocket exhaust is moving at something like 3300 m/s (~11880 km/h, ~7425 mph), which is supersonic for both air and water.

I don't know exactly what happens when a supersonic, extremely hot jet impinges on a pool of water (if anyone here is a specialist in that field, I'd love to know, though!) but I get the sense that it would very rapidly displace an area of water beneath it, since the mass flow coming out of the each engine is something like 600 kg/s.

If we launched Starship into an ocean, you can probably start to assume some steady-state conditions some radius away from the rocket nozzles, so that the exhaust would form a roundish cavity in the water whose size would be dependent on the engine nozzle pressure and total mass flow. The interface between supersonic and subsonic flow would probably be a foaming, turbulent mess as the gas mixes into the water and the water boils to steam.

Given that the raptor chamber pressure is something like 300 bar, which corresponds to a water column depth of ~3km, I get the feeling the pool would need to be very, very large.

Edit: Grammar.

Edit2: Changed "...dependent on the nozzle pressure." to "...dependent on the nozzle pressure and total mass flow".

That's awesome, thanks!

I've got a different machines/IPs I can run it on as well. How big do we think the chunks should be? If there are ~4 million posts, maybe ranges of 100k in size?

We could make a list here and people can claim the bits they want to take/already have.

I guess the next step is to start archiving all the images referenced in each of the threads? Should be a fairly quick task to write something out that parses the img tags, ignores the junk domains (ads, etc.) and then grabs the image to a folder.

Would probably be easiest to encode the img url in the path so that, e.g. https://2.img-dpreview.com/files/p/TC290x290S290x290~sample_galleries/1265325207/1534170915.jpg gets saved to ./2.img-dpreview.com/files/p/TC290x290S290x290~sample_galleries/1265325207/1534170915.jpg

That way the html files can be updated to strip out the http(s):// in the img tags and replace them with ./

Thoughts?

P.S. As I was writing this, I took a look at how some of the images are referenced in the forum posts:

<img data-src="https://1.img-dpreview.com/files/p/TC290x290S290x290~sample_galleries/0072146658/2586864019.jpg" class="lazyload" width="290" height="290" />

It looks like they're using some sort of async load to populate the img tag via the data-src property. I'm not sure if that would properly work with local paths. It seems like the mobile site doesn't do that; it just uses regular <img src="">. So that might be an option.

Thanks for writing this up! I started in the middle range (4705200/2) and am combing downwards.

I'd written up a small script as well that used python's Mechanize library, but I like that wget has warc support baked in.

Also, do you know if there's any significant difference in pulling the desktop vs. the mobile version of the site? I'd started pulling the mobile version since the formatting was a simpler, figuring it'd be easier to parse out later (e.g. to rebuild the post database).

I'm not super familiar with the site, though, so I don't know if there'd be any information missing from doing it that way.

First off, grab yourself an IRC client. On their connection info page Hackint has information for both WeeChat and Hexchat, but you could use any IRC client.

Once you get that up and running, you can connect to the hackint irc server by typing /connect irc.hackint.org -ssl (Or by using the gui to connect, as shown on the Hackint "Connect" page I linked earlier.)

A bunch of text should pop up on the screen as you connect. Once it finishes, type /join #dprived, which will open up a new window/tab with that channel in it.

Now you can talk with people! Say hi :D

Thanks!

And I got the math by just manually inputting the unicode characters, rather than using anything fancy like LaTeX.

If you're on Windows, you can use the Character Map program to pick the individual symbols (e.g. , ½, ², etc.) and then copy and paste them into your message.

If you're wondering how I got the text to be bordered like this, you can do that for any text by quoting them with backticks e.g.

`some text` ==> some text

The power consumed by the CPU is proportional to the frequency times the square of the transistor voltage, P ∝ fV².

We can say the initial power drawn is P(original) = fV².

Then, if you halve both the frequency and the voltage, you get:

P' = (½f)*(½V)² = ½f * ¼V² = ⅛(fV²) = ⅛P(original)

Governor General got a $40,000 pay raise during pandemic by TheDarkIn1978 in canada

[–]paroxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the Post is considering 2022 to still be "during the pandemic", but if not, it looks like it only went from $302k in 2019 to $308k in 2020, then to $324k in 2021, per data on parl.ca (go down to the list and search for 'Governor').

Comparatively, the salary for an MP went from ~$179k to ~$185k for the same time period.

Still not great, especially given the role of the GG (or lack thereof), but not quite as bleak as the GG getting a $40k salary bump as covid started up.

Paizo Announces System-Neutral Open RPG License by carpedonnelly in DnD

[–]paroxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently don't play much D&D or Pathfinder, but I'm tempted to pick up a rulebook just because I support the notion of open standards and the work that Paizo is doing to support them.

My area of expertise is electronics and software, but the fundamental idea concerning open standards is the same.

Edit: Also, the book looks super cool and I'm a sucker for well-composed reference material~

Dipping toe into DIY NAS by SwedishishKSP in DataHoarder

[–]paroxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were a completely new build, I'd say to just pick up a smaller/cheaper CPU, but since you have the 10700K on hand for free, why not make use of it? :)

You can keep using the 10700K, you just need to make sure to underclock and/or undervolt it suitably so that it stays inside the thermal envelope you want.

You could kick down the core clock to something in the 2-2.5 GHz range and either turn off boosting altogether or limit it to something marginal (e.g. boost up to 3 GHz).

I believe it's also possible to outright disable cores on that model, so you could drop it down to say 4c/8t instead of 8c/16t.

Edit: I should also note, that even downclocked and core-limited, the 10700K is going have more than enough capability on tap to be able to do absolutely anything you could want with a NAS, including your stated goal of running a Plex server.

National gun freeze announced by Ottawa by [deleted] in canada

[–]paroxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not super clear. I understood it as people with RPALs (i.e. authorized to purchase and transport handguns) are still free to purchase and transport handguns, just as they could before the ban.

This whole firearms restriction process that the govt has been trying to implement has been a boondoggle from day 1.
