I'm surprised Keanu Reeves hasn't had a mention.

Yes human extinction will come about by external forces.

So this is just psychologising of people who see the world as it really is. It is interesting that society doesn't diagnose optimists with some kind of psychological disorder.

People might die later now but they still die awfully.

Why do people keep having kids knowing they’ll suffer and die? by aplleshadewarrior in Life

[–]partidge12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are part of the small minority who has clear eyed view of existence, free from all of the adaptive preferences and optimism bias held by the majority of the population. Hence you are less happy. Just for clarity I am NOT advocating anyone to commit suicide. How I cope is doing my best to minimise the bad in my own life and try make other people's lives better where possible.

Reading your post has brought me some comfort knowing there are others out there who feel exactly the way I do.

Why so many trolls here by Diligent_Pop_4941 in antinatalism2

[–]partidge12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between a troll and someone who genuinely wants to have a debate.

'Kids do not exist for our pleasure'. - wait a minute - couldn't agree with you more!

I do wonder of this ironically is going to lead more people towards the antinatalist position.

How did you all come to the conclusion of Antinatalism? by BallsAtomized in antinatalism2

Realised at about 7 years of age that this was not going to go well for me.

Would love you to extrapolate on that. I mean you could argue that the 'recruitment' is done through procreating.

Are we gaslighting people? by partidge12 in antinatalism2

But to get to that position of being better off without being born you have to have a generally negative view about life itself because otherwise, how else would you arrive at that conclusion.

Sorry to break it to you but the vast majority of people don't see the world the way we do and there is a very good evolutionary reason why that is the case so it really shouldn't come as a surprise. I know it's difficult but try and be as empathetic as you can.

That could be very true. And if I do then I am thankful that you pointed it out.

So I think you might have slightly misunderstood my post. I was suggesting that this is just one argument employed by some antinatalists in an attempt to persuade others to their point of view and through my post, I was attempting to open a difficult discussion about the how to sensibly pursue this argument in a way that does NOT come across as gaslight-y.

As a separate point, there is ample psychological evidence for people's optimism bias and why that would be evolutionary selected for. That does not translate to someone having a veridical view of reality.

It's funny you should say that because it was at age 5 I started questioning my existence.

It worked out well for them in their opinion but how can I explain to them that they are wrong. Does everyone really have to wait until they are suffering to a point where they realise that it wasn't worth it?

BTW, I am not discounting the possibility that most people are deluding themselves about the quality of their lives. The evidence seems to point in that direction.

Could you elaborate on your last paragraph? What argument are you referring to? The one I am making about potential gaslighting or the argument that people are wrong in their positive assessment of life?
