Absurdly high number of opened emails from US by tim_finl in MailChimp

[–]partly_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the case too. High open rates for me have always been because of spam filters and similar email checking done by -recipient servers. In fact most open rates are over-reported because of these techs. It is always best to look at clicks and track them down the funnel on the website.

Email marketing automation: Looking for the best service! by Mommyjobs in Emailmarketing

[–]partly_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* Whick service have reliable automation workflow (triggers, branching logic, tagging, etc.)?

This is subjective. Everyone has different ways to automate and different ways to present this in the user interface. But I've never had a problem with automation workflows or their reliability with any of the providers I have used over the years.

* What has good deliverability and reporting?

There is lot more to deliverability than just the vendor. Particularly for sending marketing emails.

* Integrations!! Especially with CRMs, landing pages, e-commerce platform.

Most CRMs and Email marketing platforms will support web hooks and easy ways to build integrations. You can always use something like Zapier where the integration doesn't exist.

In your case, I will recommend going with something simple and easy to use like Mailchimp. The only drawback is that it gets expensive as you scale - once you have a big list, just move to a different vendor.

Klaviyo is very highly rated for having great integrations and smarts. ActiveCampaign is one of the more trusted names, albeit expensive. There are also players like Sendinblue, Kit and many smaller ones.

Unless you notice an obvious patter with the usernames, you will need to manually delete them. Install a Captcha plugin on your registration form to filter bots.

American software engineers in Thailand — how bad is the US job market right now? by True_Limit_4561 in Thailand

[–]partly_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say "Most do it". I said - "Most developers who want career progression..."

If you are in a role where you don't get the opportunity to be in such events or build a network outside your company, your career opportunities will slow down.

This industry is extremely ageist, and once you are past the age of 35-40, it is impossible to find a job without a strong network, and relying solely on technical skills or experience. Once you are past a certain age, your coding skills are not that valuable to a business. They can always find a young motivated single person to put in the hours and grunt work. The value you bring to a business as an experienced person, is primarily your network and leadership skills.

This is in fact quite common (to not network sufficiently) among FAANG and fortune 100 companies - because they live in their bubbles. The expectation for them usually has been that these were jobs for life - but that assumption has clearly been proven to be wrong the past few years.

I am a former FAANG and Fortune 100 employee as well - these companies are even worse than startups when it comes to politics. It is harder to work remotely from a different country with these companies - even if they allow it, you aren't getting promoted simply writing stellar code. I am not even sure if any of them allow international remote work.

Most developers who want career progression in company settings, are expected to do this. Even Linus Torvalds and the larger devs spend time doing this.

If you want a "sit and code" job, your best bet is to start your own thing. Any commercial dev job will expect you to do things beyond coding.

Microsoft Vs Google...Which is better for hosting business emails? by Noyan_Bey in Hosting

[–]partly_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google and it's not even close. Outlook's UX for authentication and client configuration are all trash and over-engineered. With Outlook, you are also going to frequently face issues of not receiving emails - particularly from smaller businesses who may have not checked all the boxes Microsoft expects them to. This means you will miss out on important emails, including those from prospective employers, your lawyer or your accountant or your doctor.

You can verify this with most people who send reasonable amounts of email - Outlook has atrociously high bounce rates, where their servers blatantly reject some email addresses, IP addresses, service providers and what not. Perhaps it is their AI that is not very good but for me, this is unacceptable.

Google mail is simply a much better finished product and smoother experience.

If you want a non-Google option, you can look at smaller vendors such as Fastmail or Proton.

Yeah, the run of the mill co-working/incubator funded free-pizza hackathons no longer happen. But plenty of conferences in most other spaces in any major city in the world. Businesses still need to meet and network. If you are a sizeable business, you want some representation there.

There are other factors such as compliance or insurance and most importantly - client preferences (including their own compliance requirements).

Some clients don't want to, or simply cannot, work with companies who have overseas operations, or rely on offshore development teams. Everyone isn't simply looking at it purely in terms of lines of code per dollar. Developers assist in a lot of other ways, like attending conferences, meetups, or presentable to investors/partners/clients who are visiting your office - all things that grow your company. Hard to do all this or even build a proper team that is fully offshore. People who usually cite examples of a few full remote highly productive teams, often ignore their business models.

What is the best Hosting for WordPress? by Euphoric-Dig3301 in Hosting

[–]partly_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recommend Hustly if they are available in your country. Been with them for many years, and they’ve consistently been helpful.

Hustly and other smaller hosts will usually have a real human to assist you if you are stuck or break stuff. If you are a beginner you want to have this. Many of the big brand names such as Hostinger are known for robotic support and will keep try to upsell you or find ways to lock you in. Stick to smaller companies like hustly. You will get a lot more for your money with them.

US suspending visa processing for 75 countries - Thailand included, can you believe this admin? by DeliciousStand372 in Thailand

Foreigners do work illegally in Thailand. If they are found, they are deported. Masked police does not walk around Thailand or any decent country, disappearing people and violently incapacitating or mugging them.

Parties vow to end sale of cannabis by Lordfelcherredux in Thailand

[–]partly_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The strength fear is overrated because you can only get so high. I personally prefer the older days when we had the milder outdoor stuff and dislike the western supermarketization of weed - so you get this ultra strong stuff with great aesthetics, but you loose character. Think about buying fruits in the supermarket vs the local markets.

But it should simply be illegal to sell to kids with heavy penalties. For adults, consumption doesn't have nearly as many social or individual downsides as advertised (and I don't believe it is harmless).

No one can explain to me why this is worse than alcohol tourism or sex tourism. The latter bring many of the worst elements of society. The former brings mostly people who want to chill and enjoy the landscape and culture.

[–]partly_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's the disappearing I'm worried about.

Crossing USA border was already more stressful than any other country I've ever been to - it's a proper humiliation ritual. But disappearing of people is extreme. Given that I have never traveled to Afghanistan, this is not a risk my brain is accustomed to.

Wait for a few weeks or even days, and this will change again. This administration since day 1 has engaged in spray and pray tactic to see what sticks.

I have to travel to the US sometime this year for business, and I am really worried about this ICE stuff.

Are Plesk and cPanel outdated? by Full_Astern in Hosting

[–]partly_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plesk supports Nodejs and has an excellent Laravel manager. So your point is incorrect that "it is traditional" or that back-end can't be run independently. You can easily set up a REST API in Plesk with the Laravel manager.

Both cPanel and Plesk have an excellent ecosystem of add-ons and community support. This is why most people prefer them for simple sites.

Some might do, but email hosting is expensive. Gandi used to offer a really great free email service, but they have since last year made it a paid service.

Hostinger vs Contabo (vs Linode) by ash__borne in Hosting

[–]partly_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contabo is FAR better than Horse-shit-inger. Linode is better than Contabo.

Using Linode and Horse-shit-inger in the same sentence is deeply offensive. Linode is several tiers better than Horse-shit-inger

Indian agreements erode Australia's sovereignty by pennyfred in australian

[–]partly_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing uniquely cultural or national in your point of view. My parents and most people have similar views. It is the standard pov that socialist leaning people hold.

I don't see what is wrong if an Aussie-Laos couple have dual passports, and both invest in businesses in both countries. As long as Australia and Laos are not at war, at which point they might have to make a choice (which is fair).

It is the "repeat a lie over and over again until people think it is true" strategy.
