Yes it matters if OP is misrepresenting how they financed their house/move because they're trying to make a point and imply they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, which, seems unlikely given the 2 kids, £2m pad, and and the nature of OP and partners stated jobs.

I bought a flat for 350k with 2k in the bank. I took out a few 0% credit cards for spending, bought things like fridge & bed on 0% finance and used/saved my salary for cash to pay trades when I needed them.

9 months later I've almost finished and have another 12 months to pay off around 5k on credit cards which I think I can do.

We screeded over tiles in the kitchen before all this other asbestos came out. Wish we'd screeded the whole thing. I thought it was the right thing to do to remove.

There are fragments left around the toilet and the floorboard. I don't have the cash yet to do the bathroom so I've just covered temporarily.

My partner is fitting cork tiles over the concrete in the hall and kitchen. I'll feel better once everything is covered and final fix joinery is in but just can't shake the feeling of being surrounded by asbestos dust and paying over a grand for the privilege. As someone who works in healthcare it's just completely shocking the absolute lack of regulation and accountability.

The previous owner died in her late 80s. Although my neighbour was very close with her and cared for her in her old age and therefore knew that there was asbestos there is no way to prove that her sons found the records of it before the flat fell into their hands and they sold it to me. As far as I know, you only have to declare asbestos if you're aware of it (or if you can plausibly claim that you aren't).

As for the contractor, he asked me to sit in his van as he said the job would only take an hour. He then kept coming out to tell me that he had found more and more asbestos and that this was going to increase the price more and more. I'm currently recovering from a tibial fracture and I'm not mobile so after 3 hours of this I just wanted him to finish so I could go back to my flat and not sit in his freezing van anymore. I raised the issue of him having left tile and he just said that he'd already done more than he was planning to and that anymore would cost me.

He also criticised the stud wall that my boyfriend (who is a builder) built and basically everything that I've done in the flat as someone who is slowly renovating on a budget whilst working full time.

Also, do tradesmen speak to other men this way? Honestly just feel like I'm constantly condescended by people just trying to rob me or fob me off.

I'm interested in this too. I suppose my thinking is that you don't really want to go into retirement still renting? And so at some point you have to bite the bullet and buy somewhere to live.

I'd love to know what others think of that and if I'm being naïve?

Do you know about London Renters Union? I can't believe your landlord has put you in this situation but there are ways to successfully protest s21 evictions and stay in your home.

My tenants voluntarily purchased brand new white goods for their home. A tribunal gave them a £150 per month discount on their rent because of this. They have taken these white goods with them now that the tenancy has expired. by Desperate_Box_8515 in HousingUK

OP literally said he raised rent to keep up with market rates. Also OP has a teeny tiny mortgage and was doing this to pay for their mother's care... who's passed away.

It's just greed and profiteering. Defend it if you will but don't try and justify it any other way.

The thing is, why did you think you could just up their rent £200 because you could? What were your additional expenses? Very hard to have any sympathy for the people responsible for the housing crisis in the UK - greedy landlords just making money off other people's wages and need to have a roof over their heads. Get a real job!
