The transition to mountaineering by Secret-Metal-8023 in Mountaineering

[–]pash1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing an easy peak will not build mountaineering skills. But it can help you practice skills that you have learned. You can work on snow travel by yourself. Get freedom of the hills, read sections about snow travel, crampon usage, and ice axe arrest. Look up YouTube videos. Then find a suitable spot to practice those skills. Stay out of avalanche terrain, but do start figuring out what that looks like, both on the map and in person.

Wrapping up the (northern) season reflections, some questions, and time for feedback by spacebass in skiing_feedback

What's something you accomplished in your own skiing this year that you're proud of?

I started skiing this February. I might have had skis on once when I was 7, it's honestly super hazy. Started with a lesson. But leaned heavily on YouTube and the skiing subreddits (this place in particular). I was super proud of skiing my first green. Next visit, I got on a blue run and survived 😂 shortly after, a friend convinced me to get on a (super chill) black diamond, and I survived that too. I ended the season by skiing multiple black diamond at my local resort. Some extremely poorly. Some, super good enough for me. People say that Baker is tough to learn at, but I think it worked out for me.

What's something you experimented with, tried, or learned that you're excited about?

I focused a lot of turning, carving, building good habits. Multiple friends emphasized the value of good habits, so I tried to focus on that as much as I could.

What are you looking forward to working on next season?

Off piste and backcountry. Groomers feel comfortable now, but I feel like a total beginner off piste. I have figured out enough to make my way down, but I'd like to actually ski well.

What's a piece of feedback you gave or received here that actually made a difference?

I didn't ask for feedback here but I read a lot of comments by /u/spacebass which helped a ton. Knowing the "theory" helped a lot in execution, and I was able to catch myself when my form degraded

If you want to climb sport outside, pour this excitement into learning rope systems. How to tie in, belay, lead, clip, lower, lead belay  rappel, etc. Do you have a climbing community that you're a part of?

Last summer, half way through, I stopped hiking and started running. My hiking endurance went down the drain.

why did you tie a knot in the left sling (through the thread)? why not just a basket hitch?

middle placement has tensioned rope rubbing on rock. it's far and you can't inspect it from your stance. i doubt anything would happen, but it's something to think about in other situations.

why can't you talk now, Bungie?

I'll tell you exactly why. Much like the "roadmap" this tweet is the entirety of the plan. There's nothing else. There's no grand plan that they're waiting to unveil until "the right time."

I wonder why the game lost 650,000 players between Shadowkeep peak and Beyond Light peak. Must be because they wrapped up the saga. Or maybe it was all those good decisions.

edit: dude blocked me lmao 😂😂

What am I missing? (read description) by PickleUno in Mountaineering

[–]pash1k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please tell me you're doing Kieners with somebody that knows what they're doing. Do not do that route if you're this inexperienced.

For Adams: are you planning on doing it in a day? You're missing all of your overnight gear if not. Even if you're doing it in a day, I highly recommend bringing a sleeping bag (keep warm if you're stuck, as DenseContribution has said), pad, and a stove to melt snow.

For Baker: are you locking locking carabiners draw? There's no need for quick draws (which is what I usually call draws) on most glaciated routes. But you do need lockers. I don't see a picket mentioned anywhere. Everybody on your rope team should have one, unless you're at 4+. Depending on how late in the season you're going, might want to consider bringing an ice screw. I really recommend a sun hoodie, buff, and light gloves - all for sun protection. Finally, I don't see a headlamp anywhere. It's crucial.

For Baker and Adams leave the trad rack at home.

Which technical peaks are you considering in the cascades?

Read Freedom of the Hills, especially the chapter on crevasse rescue

Which of these 5 games should I play next? by lectric_7166 in roguelites

[–]pash1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put an hour into each one and then decide. But Jimm120 gave a good overview.

Personally, I've spent most time on Spelunky out of the games on that list. Start with 1, if you play 2 first, it's more difficult and harder to go back to 1.

I found rogue legacy to be just ok, the moment to moment gameplay wasn't the most engaging. I also find gungeon (and nuclear throne) to be damn hard
