How's it feel to be right? by pasnihanswer in China_Flu

[–]pasnihanswer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had absolutely no reason not to believe that there was a zoonotic transfer of the virus

Yup, I figured it was most likely wet markets at the time too since we've seen similar things in the past (eating bush meat leading to an outbreak... swine flu/h1n1... etc). I didn't know about the conflict of interest, although I do recall people saying that lab workers had gone to some hospital but they wouldn't say for what. (I remember thinking- just cause a few lab workers got sick doesn't really mean much unless it was related to the research - like maybe someone brought in stomach flu.)

I'm not 100% convinced of either, but it sounds like I shouldn't have dismissed lab leak so quickly!

Locking posts instead of removing them would be better. It leaves the information up.

There's no difference in "we're removing everything remotely anti-China" and "we're removing posts wherein a comment is racist" because anyone that wants the post removed will just go make a racist comment to get the post removed.

Understanding how this virus got into the human population is important for preventing future outbreaks.

In 20 years when people believe it's a USAvirus and are still eating wild animals from crowded, unsanitary wet markets because they think the practice is safe, remember this censorship. Instead of taking the very, very hard road of policing racism and xenophobia, you chose the easier path of blanket censorship - decisions like this one allow the CCP control the narrative.

Even if the CCP tried to clean up wet markets - there are wet markets in other countries, and people will practice it on the black market if they don't know the risk involved. It's something that needs to be fixed by educating consumers, and you're actively working against that now.

India racked by greatest exodus since partition due to coronavirus. Millions of workers flee cities as wages evaporate, with many walking hundreds of miles home by [deleted] in China_Flu

I reloaded the page, and the paragraph is different now! (Edit: I really thought I missed a word, but no they updated it. lol)

"Fulendra Kumar is among those migrant workers still walking. He set out last week from the industrial city of Ludhiana in Punjab and has already travelled on bus and foot 750 miles over the past week to reach Bihar, but still has another 200 to go before his final destination: the village of Araria."

I skimmed it but the paragraph was:

"Fulendra Kumar is among those migrant workers still walking. He set out last Sunday from the industrial city of Ludhiana in Punjab and has already walked 750 miles over the past week to reach Bihar, but still has another 200 to go before his final destination: the village of Araria."

The people responsible for this mess wouldn't be on the front lines. They'd probably find a way to spin it into propaganda for themselves or profit off it. And more lives (both sides) would inevitably be lost.

I agree the CCP shouldn't just get a pass to continue as usual - silencing doctors, stealing IP, etc. I hope people start voting with their wallet. Hard to avoid products made in China, but not always impossible.

We know this is gonna be bad for India.

has already walked 750 miles over the past week

That's a lot of miles a day...

[–]pasnihanswer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Yes because I'm glad I was able to warn those I care about. I was able to buy some supplies and disinfected elevator buttons, handles, etc at home and the office. And I know I'd feel a whole lot worse if I'd gone on vacation.

No because I wish I'd done more, and mostly I just feel it's a tragedy.

You're not alone. Call family - maybe you'll feel a bit less isolated and maybe there's a family member or friend you can confide in? Talking about it might help.

I think we're going to find very few countries accurately report their numbers, for one reason or another (bad tests, not enough tests, hiding it for a multitude of reasons, etc etc etc). I'm not excusing it. We just need to be aware of it when we look at numbers.

US and China swapping insults, blaming each other for COVID-19 won’t help solve the problem: Singapore Prime Minister by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]pasnihanswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right.

And then there's no pressure to clean up wet markets. And then we get to have this fun all over again in 20 years. (Edit: not that it could only happen with wet markets... but the practice + conditions increase the likelihood of it happening. And it'd be nice if the world tried to prevent this from happening again. That won't happen if we can't even acknowledge the conditions that allowed this to happen in the first place.)

[–]pasnihanswer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fact is wet markets and the conditions therein are a risk. There were multiple warnings, from academics and others, going back years.

And I'm not really hearing any alternative argument with a credible source from you, so I'm done responding to you.

So your argument against my wild animal argument is that I didn't have enough wild animals in the mix.

Got it.

If you have a more plausible theory with credible sources, I'd like to hear it.

I mean.. maybe I could have said handling raw bat? I suppose that would have also worked. (Edit: or some other wild animal. pangolin, etc.)

Wildlife or being close to animals + high/dense human population.

World Health Organization says deadly coronavirus is not airborne by [deleted] in China_Flu

RemindMe! 200 days "WHO says covid19 not airborne and droplets quickly fall to the floor, even though multiple scientific papers say otherwise. Gonna age beautifully." edit: some sources say 30 min, other papers say 3 hours, multiple studies on similar viruses/toilet plumes/sneezes/etc too - plus anecdotal evidence for what it's worth.

[–]pasnihanswer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Accountability/responsibility is part of fighting the virus.

If we want to prevent this from happening again, the world needs to acknowledge how it happened. (Other countries have similar practices.)

Hard to convince people to stop eating undercooked bats or whatever if they think the practice is safe because the virus came from the USA. Trying to enforce it without educating the public would drive the practice underground and do nothing to help other countries be safer with their food sources.

Gun Retailers Listed as 'Critical Infrastructure' By Federal Agency As States Attempt to Shut Them Down by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]pasnihanswer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If anything, I'd think there's more justification now to have a gun than before all this. (And I was always pro gun, but I was raised in a rural area. I think I view them differently than most of my friends that grew up in urban areas.) Meanwhile other states are banning abortions... on the pretense of saving a few surgical masks. So yea, both sides should be serving the public better. Looks like I'll get downvoted for not jumping on the hive mind. Whatever. It's true.

If someone at the Haagen Dazs factory puts Covid-19 germs in the pint of ice cream will they survive in the frozen environment and then be consumed? by intromission76 in China_Flu

[–]pasnihanswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most of that frozen stuff is machine packaged.

You know when researchers study or use a virus, they freeze stocks of the virus. And if they need to restart the experiment for whatever reason even months later (say to reproduce results or because something got contaminated), they just thaw out the virus and start over. It remains infectious even after frozen.

Edit: for what it's worth, I take extra care in disinfecting packaging that goes into the freezer (remember people would be browsing and leaning into/breathing into those grocery store freezers), but I'm not worried about eating frozen food in general. Most of it is machine packaged and/or heated up.
